- Chapter 7 - The Prince’s Friend
“I’m annulling my engagement with Louis.”
Alice declared firmly, her gaze sharp as she looked at Louis.
“A-Alice… You’re joking, right? You wouldn’t really break off our engagement…”
“I’m completely serious. You were the one who said it first, remember?”
“That… I didn’t mean it that way… I wasn’t serious about her… The only person I truly love is you, Alice!”
Louis stammered, desperately trying to smooth things over.
“You’re the worst… Lying like that… You said it clearly, right in front of her.”
“…”
“Louis, did you actually enjoy tormenting Alice? That’s disgusting!” Colin snapped.
“Wait, that’s not—”
Louis paled as both Alice and Colin stared at him coldly.
The nobles nearby, who had overheard the conversation, began whispering among themselves.
“Oh my, an engagement annulment?”
“At Prince Camille’s engagement banquet, no less. Whose family is involved?”
“That man… I saw him dancing earlier. He seemed to be having a wonderful time, dancing two consecutive songs with the same woman.”
“Perhaps he was cheating?”
The murmuring reached Louis’s ears, making him want to leave as soon as possible. He grabbed Alice’s wrist.
“!? What are you doing?”
“Let’s go home. We can talk in the carriage.”
“There’s nothing to talk about! Let go of me!”
Alice struggled as Louis tried to pull her away, and Colin quickly reached out to stop him.
Thud!
“Ow!? What—”
A figure stepped between them. Standing before Louis was the black-haired man from earlier—Sion. He shot Louis a sharp look, a slight smirk playing on his lips.
“Do you like cake?”
“Huh!? W-who are you?”
“Me? I’m Prince Camille’s friend. And from what I hear, my dear friend isn’t too happy that someone decided to stage a broken engagement at his banquet.”
“W-wait, Prince Camille…? B-but, the engagement annulment was—”
Louis, flustered, immediately let go of Alice’s hand, his face turning even paler.
“I’ll escort her home. You should leave first.”
“Huh? But… I’m her—”
“Just a childhood friend, from what I’ve heard. Or do you still not realize how much you’ve hurt her?”
“……”
Sion’s words were sharp, and Louis felt them cut deep. Alice, who still refused to look at him, only made it worse. Shoulders slumped, he turned and left the castle.
“Are you okay?”
“…Yes…”
“Alice!”
“…Colin…”
Colin hurried to Alice’s side, taking her hand in his.
“Alice, are you really okay?”
“Yeah… I’m sorry for worrying you.”
“I’ll take you home,” Sion offered.
Alice hesitated, confused. Why is someone I just met offering to take me home?
“…Ah… That’s not necessary. I’ll be fine.”
“It’s me who won’t be fine. That guy might be waiting for you at your estate.”
Sion smirked slightly. “Besides, I owe you an apology for the cake. Let me take you home.”
“Cake?”
Alice blinked, tilting her head as she looked up at Sion. He was taller than Louis and carried himself with an air of confidence.
“Alice, you should let him,” Colin urged.
“Huh?”
“I’d feel better if you weren’t alone… I really think you need time to process everything. Right now, you’re still overwhelmed.”
“…Colin…”
Though still hesitant, Alice eventually agreed, allowing Sion to escort her home. Colin smiled, watching her leave.
“…He seems like the type who already has a woman in his life… Should I have gone with her?”
“He’s single, don’t worry. Believe it or not, he’s actually quite serious underneath it all.”
“Huh!?”
Colin turned in shock at the unexpected voice—Prince Camille himself, grinning playfully.
“…I never thought you’d be so interested in something other than cake, Sion…”
