- Chapter 8 - The Man Who Loves Cake (END)
As Alice left the castle, she never imagined that she would end up parting ways with Louis.
“…Hic… sniff…”
She had resolved not to cry in front of Sion, whom she had just met, but the tears flowed on their own, and she couldn’t stop them.
As their carriage approached Alice’s estate, the driver informed Sion of another carriage parked outside the gates.
“…It seems he’s waiting for you.”
“…What?”
“Whether you want to speak with him or not is up to you.”
“…I don’t want to see him right now.”
“I see. Then go inside.”
Sion stopped the carriage near the entrance and helped Alice down. Just then, Louis jumped out of his own carriage and ran toward them.
“Alice!”
He froze when he saw her tear-streaked face, his eyes widening in shock.
“Go home! I don’t even want to see your face!”
“A-Alice… Please, listen to me. We’re not calling off our engagement. You know I have nothing going on with her! You saw it yourself—she was just alone and anxious, and I only wanted to comfort her… That’s all I meant!”
Louis gave her a strained smile, desperately trying to hold onto her.
“…I’d like to properly thank you for escorting me,” Alice said, turning to Sion.
“Oh, sure…”
“Huh!? Alice?”
Ignoring Louis, Alice led Sion inside, leaving Louis standing dumbfounded at the door.
“Alice, welcome home! Did you enjoy—huh!?”
Hearing the carriage arrive, Alice’s mother had come to greet her, expecting Louis. Instead, she was stunned to see her daughter with an unfamiliar man.
“…M-Mother…!”
Tears streaming down her face, Alice threw herself into her mother’s arms. Caught off guard, her mother looked back and forth between her sobbing daughter and the stranger standing at the door, clearly confused.
“What happened?”
“Alice’s father approached, his expression serious.
“…And who might you be?”
“I apologize for not introducing myself earlier. My name is Sion Granchester. I escorted your daughter in his place.”
“Granchester… Ah! The son of Duke Granchester!?”
Alice’s father was visibly shocked, recognizing the noble name. Both parents were bewildered by the situation, unable to comprehend why their daughter had returned home with such a distinguished guest.
“Alice, what about Louis?”
“…Louis… Waaahhh…!”
“!”
Alice burst into tears at the mention of his name.
“…He asked her to annul their engagement.”
“…What!? An annulment!?”
“That can’t be! Alice was so excited about attending the banquet with him—there must be some mistake!”
“…It’s true. Louis told me at the castle that he wanted to end our engagement…”
“What!?”
Her parents were furious but decided to wait until Alice had calmed down before discussing the matter further.
As Sion turned to leave, Alice called out to him.
“Um…!”
He glanced back.
“Thank you… for everything.”
“…Don’t mention it.”
“I’d like to properly thank you…”
“If you still remember me later, invite me for a tea party.”
“Huh?”
Sion smiled, then walked away.
The next day, Alice’s parents had a massive argument with Louis’s family. The engagement was officially annulled, and Louis never found a suitable bride—remaining single for the rest of his life.
Sometime later, during a tea party—
“Thanks for inviting me.”
“Colin.”
“Is anyone else coming?”
“Yes. Someone who really loves cake.”
The End.
