Episode 25: Status Report
The room we were guided to had many luxurious furnishings that seemed to have been imported from the neighboring continent. Vermilion vases and elegant tableware with golden arabesque patterns on a white base were lined up. The amber-colored table was polished to a shine. It reflected the chandelier on the ceiling.
No matter how you looked at it, this wasn’t a room adventurers should be shown to. When I sat down on the guided sofa, my body sank in with a soft feeling.
“I must say, I’m surprised. I thought at least a letter of notice would come first.”
The Count smiled wryly. That would be the usual way. Coming directly like this really wasn’t good.
I thought it was an emergency at Pamela’s family home and hurried over. But it didn’t seem to be the case. I guess I overreacted. Realizing that, I smiled wryly too.
“I apologize. That was very rude of me…”
“It’s not El-sama’s fault. I was the one who suggested it would be fine for El-sama to come directly. If someone is to be scolded, it should be me!”
Pamela had been sitting quietly next to me. She suddenly leaned forward. Seeing that, the Countess widened her eyes again.
She probably wasn’t the type of girl to do something like that. Even though she was raised as a lady, just being with me for a short time made her become this wild and assertive. I really do feel sorry about that.
But, compared to how she was before, she’s much brighter now. And above all, she looks like she’s enjoying herself.
“Calm down, Pamela. I’m not angry, and I have no intention of getting angry. It’s just that I didn’t expect you to arrive so quickly. We couldn’t even prepare a welcome.”
The Count laughed heartily. Pamela was looking a bit awkward. She lowered her head and spoke.
“I’m very sorry. Since we came so close in an instant with El-sama’s teleportation magic, I thought it would be rude to make him wait there…”
“…What did you say?”
Oops, that’s not good. People who can use teleportation magic are rare on this continent. At the Count’s bewildered voice, Pamela froze. Then, like an old door creaking, she slowly turned to look at me.
Seeing that, I couldn’t help but smile wryly.
“Lady Reinach, you don’t need to worry about it. I simply used the magic because I wanted to.”
“Sir Ernest, we have no intention of telling anyone about that matter.”
Maybe because he saw Pamela freeze up like a wax doll, the Count came to her aid. The Countess also quietly nodded.
“Pamela.”
Pamela muttered softly.
“Huh?”
“It’s Pamela, El-sama. You were just calling me that until a little while ago, weren’t you?”
Pamela furrowed her beautiful willowy brows and spoke firmly. Pamela’s face was close. About two fists apart. “My,” said the Countess in surprise. Yeah, this is bad. What do I do……….
At that moment, a deliberate *ahem* was heard. Snapping back to herself, Pamela quietly sat back on the sofa. However, this time, she was sitting very close to me.
Seeing that, the Count finally gave a wry smile.
“I’d like to hear more about what you mentioned earlier at the gate. I heard some unfamiliar words… something like summoned beast, White Tiger, or Fenrir, I think?”
Saying that, the Count glanced at Shiro. He looked like nothing but a cat lying on the polished wooden floor made of parquet next to the sofa. And Orto looked like nothing but a large dog. When Orto opened one eye and looked back, he slowly stood up and looked at the Count and Countess.
“Eep.”
The Countess clung to the Count sitting beside her. Her ample chest squished. The Count’s expression softened for a moment. But he quickly tightened again with a serious look.
If it weren’t me, anyone probably would’ve missed it. That’s how brief the moment was.
“Orto, these are my parents. Don’t glare at them like that.”
Pamela scolded with a *meh*, and Orto’s ears and tail drooped completely. He really just looks like a dog.
“My apologies. I simply wanted to show a good side to the parents of my master…”
“Oh, is that what it was? Orto is cute enough as he is, so it’s perfectly fine.”
Pamela smiled warmly at Orto.
“Haa…”
I heard Orto’s displeased voice. He probably wanted to show that he was “cool”, not “cute”, Pamela.
“It…”
“It?”
““It talked—!””
The two of them shouted at the same time. They slipped up. Was this their first time seeing a summoned beast? I explained to the Count and Countess about the summoned beasts. And while I was at it, I also told them about Pamela’s magical aptitude.
The two were greatly surprised. And just as much, they were overjoyed. Apparently, they had always felt pain over the fact that Pamela could only use one attribute. Especially her mother. Even though her appearance was just like her own, she had been unable to give Pamela magical aptitude.
But not only was that not true, it turned out she was a user of a higher-ranked attribute. With tears in her eyes, she hugged Pamela. And riding that momentum, she hugged me too, saying “Thank you.”
Something even bigger and softer than Pamela, like a squishy Slime, pressed against my chest. A refreshing and pleasant scent drifted toward me. It’s no wonder the Count’s expression had relaxed.
Pamela had a firm and springy bounce, while the Countess had a soft, enveloping feel. They look similar, but their qualities are different—I was impressed by that when suddenly Pamela ripped the Countess off me. Then she glared sharply at her mother.
Huh? Could this be… jealousy? Toward her own mother? Confused, I looked at Pamela. She clearly had an unhappy expression. Her lips were pouting, her cheeks puffed slightly. And above all, her eyes were sharply angled. She’s definitely angrier than before!
“El-sama, what kind of face are you making!?”
Still with that expression, she glared at me this time.
“Huh?”
“Master, you had such a sloppy face just now.”
Shiro kindly told me what kind of face I had been making. Crap, was it showing on my face?
When Shiro suddenly spoke, the Countess exclaimed, “My, the kitty can talk too!?” and picked Shiro up in surprise. Shiro was now nestled against her ample chest. He changed his expression into one that looked like it was melting… I see, *that’s* the kind of face I had.
I looked awkwardly at Pamela. Then, for some reason, Pamela clung tightly to me. Of course, she firmly pressed her chest into mine.
“My, my!”
The Countess raised her voice. The Count looked at us with a stunned expression. However, it seemed he didn’t plan to stop it.
…Is it okay to think that I’ve been officially approved by the parents? As I patted Pamela’s head and back, who kept pressing up against me, I had a strange feeling—like the outer walls were being closed in around me.
“Master, you’ve got a really sloppy face right now.”
Can’t help it, right? It feels too good.
