- It Was A Fake Marriage, But Jiu Qian Sui Took It Seriously
- Chapter 13 - “Care About Her”
Inside the room, a screen shielded the bed. Dr. Xiao Yang sat at a desk adjusting the prescription, while Tian Xing and Chun Hua took care of things.
When the three saw the Lord Jiu enter, they were shocked and quickly stood up to greet him.
Dr. Xiao Yang had encountered the Lord Jiu Qian Sui many times over the years but had never seen him so close to a woman before. He had always thought… He did not like women.
Under Jun Mo Ran’s imposing presence, no one dared show their surprise. They quickly lowered their heads after a glance.
Shen Qing Li was anxious about her mother and wanted to ask Dr. Yang about her condition, but the Duke had not yet given permission to rise, so she didn’t dare speak.
“How is Madam Shen? ” Jun Mo Ran’s soft voice calms Shen Qing Li’s heart.
Dr. Xiao Yang looked up and seriously said, “Her condition has stabilized. The most dangerous time has passed, and she should wake up in a day or two. However, she still needs careful nurturing. My master will arrive soon to confirm with another pulse diagnosis.”
Shen Qing Li finally felt a big weight lifted from her heart. She bowed to Dr. Xiao Yang, who quickly returned the gesture.
She rushed past the screen and hurried to the bed, seeing that although her mother still lay there as before, her face has some color now. Tears and a smile filled her eyes.
Chun Hua, standing beside her, whispered, “Miss, you should rest for a while. You haven’t slept since yesterday, and your body won’t hold up. Don’t worry, Tian Xing and I are here to take care of things.”
Shen Qing Li indeed felt tired. Thinking she could return to take care of her mother later, she didn’t refuse. She gave some detailed instructions and walked out from behind the screen.
Just as she rounded the screen, she felt a gaze on her. She looked up and saw a silhouette in the backlight. His expression was unclear, but his figure was distinguished, and the sunlight gave his hair a golden halo, like an ethereal being.
“Lady Shen, there’s no major concern with Madam Shen here. I’ll go inform my master now,” Dr. Xiao Yang said as he packed his medical box and took his leave.
Shen Qing Li quickly had Chun Hua present fifty taels of silver, already sealed in an envelope, but Dr. Xiao Yang immediately declined.
“No, no, no. Master instructed us not to accept any red envelopes this time since we’re here on someone’s behalf. He’ll retrieve payment from the person who sent us.” His voice grew quieter, and he glanced at the Duke.
Hearing this, Shen Qing Li felt a bit confused. The person who sent them was clearly Lord Jiu… This favor would be hard to repay. What would Dr. Yang want in return? Would it be difficult?
Before she could insist further, Jun Mo Ran calmly said, “It’s alright, keep the red envelope.”
Shen Qing Li had no choice but to put away the envelope and see Dr. Xiao Yang out.
While returning, she saw Jun Mo Ran also leaving the courtyard. She knew that expressing further gratitude would be futile, so she walked forward, head down, and softly said, “My mother is out of danger now. Let me see you off, Lord Jiu Qian Sui.”
“You don’t want me here…” Jun Mo Ran’s voice was serious, showing no emotion.
Shen Qing Li’s face flushed, and her heart pounded. She didn’t understand what he meant or how to respond.
She slowly looked up into his eyes, appearing calm, but she could detect a trace of warmth in them.
Jun Mo Ran chuckled softly and took a step closer. Shen Qing Li twisted her handkerchief, her heart racing faster. “I, I…”
Fortunately, he didn’t let her embarrassment last long. He gently said, “I’ll leave now. Remember to rest well.”
Shen Qing Li felt a bit relieved and bowed, responding, “Yes.”
The small courtyard was bathed in sunlight as the two stood facing each other.
Yun Sheng entered the courtyard carrying a food box and saw his lord looking down at Lady Shen, who was also looking down. It was quite a beautiful scene.
He cleared his throat and hid his smile, saying, “My Lord, here’s the item you requested.”
Jun Mo Ran took the food box from Yun Sheng and handed it to Shen Qing Li. “This was specially prepared for you. Have something to eat and rest. You haven’t eaten well these past two days, and you mustn’t wear yourself out.”
Yun Sheng’s eyes were full of surprise and curiosity. When had their lord ever spoken to someone like this, let alone with concern?
Their lord usually took action without saying much. This was probably the longest sentence he had ever heard from him.
Shen Qing Li instinctively wanted to decline. After all, she wasn’t that familiar with Jun Mo Ran. She was already grateful for his help and didn’t want to trouble him with such trivial matters.
However, when she met his deep, dark eyes, she felt a bit scared, fearing to see the coldness within them.
She took the food box with both hands, accidentally touching his burning hot hand, and softly said, “Thank you, Lord Jiu.”
Jun Mo Ran was satisfied to see her accept the food box obediently. “You’ve thanked me many times already. Don’t you find it troublesome?”
Shen Qing Li’s palms were sweaty. She lowered her head and didn’t know what to say.
Seeing her somewhat restrained expression, Jun Mo Ran said nothing more and left the Yongwang Marquis’ household with Yun Sheng.
Shen Qingli instructed that she would call her when Dr. Yang arrived and then went to her room to open the food box. Inside was a bowl of steaming red-oil wontons.
The wontons had thin skins, and you could see the light red filling through them. A thin layer of red oil was topped with white sesame seeds, and eating a bite of the soup, it was delicious and spicy. It awakened her long-dormant taste buds, and she quickly finished the big bowl.
Feeling content, she set the bowl down, her tongue and stomach both satisfied.
The borderlands were always humid, and the people there liked spicy food, but the taste of food in Shengjing was generally mild. The people in the Marquis’ household emphasized the original flavor of the ingredients. Even when she occasionally went out for wontons, the taste wasn’t as good as these red oil wontons, which she didn’t like.
Unexpectedly, thanks to Jun Mo Ran, she got to taste such authentic red oil wontons today. The spiciness was just right for her.
Once she finished eating, she set the bowl on the table and relaxed, eventually drifting off to sleep.
The sunlight slowly moved from the window to the corner of the wall and faded until the last ray disappeared.
Shen Qing Li woke up slowly, noticing the room was dim and unable to tell whether it was day or night.
After a brief pause, she quickly sat up, realizing she had slept through most of the day!
Had Dr. Yang not come? Why hadn’t Chun Hua called her?
She quickly washed up and went to her mother’s room.
She learned that Dr. Yang had come and confirmed there was no cause for concern. Only then did she feel relieved. “Chun Hua, why didn’t you wake me up? It was a great favor for Dr. Yang to come and see my mother. How could we be so discourteous?”
Chun Hua smiled and pleaded, “Miss, I wanted to wake you, but Dr. Yang said someone instructed you to rest well and not be woken. I didn’t dare disobey.”
Hearing “someone instructed,” her face turned red. He was really… concerned about her.
Chun Hua’s eyes were wide with curiosity. “Miss, it seems that the Duke…”
They had grown up together, and she knew what Chun Hua was trying to say. She glared at her with embarrassment and didn’t bother to say anything more.
She thought to herself, recalling how the Lord Jiu Qian Sui had always been kinder to her than to anyone else since they were young.
Suddenly she heard someone softly called Chun Hua from outside the room, and she went out to check who it was…
