It’s About You (GL High H) - Chapter 21
The sky had not yet fully brightened when Wanqi Lang was awakened by a wave of soreness.
She groggily opened her eyes, feeling as if her entire body had been run over by a truck, especially the roots of her thighs and where her waist connected to her hips, so achingly soft that lifting a leg took effort, and there was a faint swelling below.
She moved slightly and discovered she was still curled up on the sofa, covered with a blanket. Xing Enxi had her back to her, holding her phone and sitting on the carpet beside the sofa, wearing only a thin white shirt on her upper body, with several documents spread out on the small coffee table in front of her.
She was actually looking at documents?
The morning light outlined Xing Enxi’s focused profile.
Wanqi Lang felt a bit moved.
“Your energy is really good; you still have the strength to look at this?”
Xing Enxi turned her head upon hearing the voice, her face also showing fatigue, but her eyes were clear. Seeing Wanqi Lang awake, a softness flashed in her gaze.
“Awake?” She put down the document in her hand, picked up a half-drunk bottle of mineral water from beside her, and handed it over. “Want some water?”
Wanqi Lang took the water and gulped down several mouthfuls, finally moistening her throat that was dry as smoke.
“What documents?” Wanqi Lang glanced at the coffee table. “So early in the morning, and Shen Zhiwei is already this ruthless?”
“The supplementary agreement for the merger and acquisition case.” Xing Enxi answered briefly. “The revised version sent over by the other party in the early hours. President Shen asked me to look at it as soon as possible.”
She paused, looking at the half-exposed bare leg of Wanqi Lang wrapped in the blanket.
“Anyway, you were sleeping soundly, and I couldn’t sleep either.”
Wanqi Lang felt like she was being subtly criticized. Had she slept soundly? No, she had passed out from exhaustion.
“You say, with our constitutions like this, can we still drink together in the future?”
Wanqi Lang licked her still somewhat numb lips. This question was too important; it concerned her happiness below the belt. She had to admit, Xing Enxi really suited her taste in bed.
Xing Enxi raised an eyebrow, leaning back slightly, arms crossed over her chest, looking at her leisurely. “How? Scared?”
“Scared? Who’s scared!” Wanqi Lang reacted like a cat whose tail had been stepped on, her voice pitching higher. “I’ve, Wanqi Lang, never been afraid of anyone!”
“Hm…” Xing Enxi responded slowly, her gaze meaningfully scanning Wanqi Lang’s body once. “Then next time, try one with a higher proof.”
Wanqi Lang reflexively wanted to retreat, but it only made the sofa creak.
Xing Enxi didn’t tease her further and stood up to loosen her somewhat stiff shoulders and neck. “Let’s tidy up. I need to go to the company.”
Wanqi Lang wrapped herself in the jacket, sluggishly got off the sofa, her legs so soft she nearly didn’t stand steady, but fortunately Xing Enxi reached out in time to steady her.
Wanqi Lang grabbed her arm to stabilize herself and suddenly thought of something, her voice a bit muffled. “Can we go riding next Saturday?”
Xing Enxi looked down at her, seeing her uncharacteristically lacking confidence, probably afraid she’d go back on her word, and the corner of her mouth hooked up again.
“Yes.” Her answer was firm and decisive. “But you have to promise me one thing.”
“What?” Wanqi Lang was on guard.
“Sit obediently in the back seat, hold onto me tightly with your hands, but don’t move around.”
“…”
She felt completely pinned down, yet a rebellious feeling rose in her heart.
“Got it! You’re nagging!” Wanqi Lang shook off Xing Enxi’s hand and limped toward the small shower room in the back.
Xing Enxi shook her head with a helpless laugh. She picked up her phone and dialed.
“Order two breakfasts, deliver to Boss Lang’s bar, light ones, and add an extra milk to one of them.”
She hung up and her gaze fell on the blurry figure behind the frosted glass of the shower room. She wondered about herself, why she couldn’t bring herself to dislike her.
…
Saturday, the sunshine was just right.
Wanqi Lang rarely got up early, dithering in the dressing room for a long time, finally choosing a handsome and cool pair of black leather pants, paired with a tight crop top, and threw on a biker-style thin jacket outside. She turned a few circles in front of the mirror, satisfiedly whistling. Motorcycle cruising, just thinking about it was exciting.
She arrived at the bar half an hour early, humming a tune while wiping the bar counter.
Time passed minute by minute.
Five minutes before the appointed time…
Time arrived…
Ten minutes passed…
The entrance to the bar was empty, only sunlight and the occasional passerby.
The smile on Wanqi Lang’s lips slowly faded. She took out her phone to check—no calls, no messages.
“What’s going on? Traffic jam?” She muttered, enduring and waiting another fifteen minutes.
Patience completely exhausted. Wanqi Lang, face darkened, dialed Xing Enxi’s number.
Beep… beep… beep… It rang for a long time before being answered.
“Hello?” Xing Enxi’s voice came through, heavy with nasal congestion. “Wanqi Lang? What’s up?”
What’s up? Wanqi Lang’s anger flared up.
“Xing Enxi! Where are you? You fucking stood me up?” She yelled into the phone.
Silence for a few seconds on the other end, then Xing Enxi’s hoarse voice: “Sorry, I’m at the company. Pulled an all-nighter yesterday, just dozed off on the desk for a bit and didn’t notice the time.”
Her voice got lower and lower, ending with a suppressed cough.
Wanqi Lang imagined Xing Enxi with dark circles under her eyes, frowning at the computer screen.
Her tone was still stiff, but obviously softened a bit. “You pulled an all-nighter and couldn’t say something in advance? Making me wait like an idiot for nearly half an hour!”
“Sorry,” Xing Enxi apologized again, her voice full of fatigue and “really sorry, I completely forgot to check the time.”
In the background, there seemed to be colleagues discussing something.
The awkwardness in Wanqi Lang’s heart was replaced a little by heartache; she could see how desperately Xing Enxi worked.
“Alright, alright,” Wanqi Lang irritably waved her hand. “From the sound of your voice, hurry up and go rest; don’t die at the company.”
Xing Enxi responded lowly. “Mm… Can we do the motorcycle another day? I’ll make it up for sure.”
“We’ll see.”
Wanqi Lang hung up irritably, her heart empty and a bit stuffy—really not pleased!
The next day, the bar opened as usual.
Wanqi Lang’s mood was still a bit down; even wiping glasses had a fierce vigor.
Old Zhang wisely stayed far away.
Around five in the afternoon, the bar door was pushed open.
Xing Enxi walked in. She wasn’t in formal wear, just simple beige casual clothes, hair loosely tied up, carrying a small paper bag in her hand.
Wanqi Lang saw her and deliberately turned her face away, vigorously cleaning.
Xing Enxi walked to the bar and sat down, gently placing the paper bag on the counter.
Stalemate for a long time.
“Is your throat better?” Wanqi Lang finally couldn’t hold back and spoke first.
“Much better.” Xing Enxi smiled, pushing the paper bag toward Wanqi Lang a bit. “As compensation.”
Wanqi Lang glanced at her and opened the paper bag. Inside were dim sum from a famous Hong Kong-style tea restaurant in the city center, said to have lines that could kill you—shrimp dumplings, siu mai, and a box of double-skin milk.
All her favorites.
She still kept a straight face. “Hmph, don’t think this can buy me off.”
“I know it’s not enough.” Xing Enxi fished out a small exquisitely packaged box from under the paper bag. “This is the main one.”
Wanqi Lang took it and opened it, her eyes lighting up. Inside was a pair of riding windproof goggles in fluorescent pink with matte black.
“Next Saturday, the forecast says it will be sunny. This time, no accidents; I guarantee.” Xing Enxi looked at her with serious eyes.
The bit of anger in Wanqi Lang’s heart had actually dissipated long ago, but she still had to keep up appearances on the surface. She picked up the goggles and put them on, looking in the mirror again and again, the corners of her mouth uncontrollably turning up.
“They’re cool, but that’s not enough.”
“Oh? What other compensation does the boss want?” Xing Enxi asked.
Wanqi Lang lifted her chin and said word by word:
“Let me top you once more.”
Xing Enxi was stunned, not expecting Wanqi Lang to be so direct. But who would normally make such a request?
“…Okay.”
She agreed reluctantly, but agreed.
She said no more. “See you next Saturday.”
With that, she left, her back a bit stiff.
