It’s About You (GL High H) - Chapter 30
Xing Enxi withdrew the hand that had been about to smash the pillow.
Wanqi Lang reacted the fastest and tossed the pillow from her arms back onto the bed in one go. She let out two dry laughs. “Haha, that… we were just fooling around… right, Enxi? It’s good to loosen up the muscles and joints for recovery, haha…”
As she spoke, she frantically signaled Xing Enxi with her eyes.
Xing Enxi simply wanted to find a hole in the ground to crawl into. She lowered her eyes and straightened the hem of her perfectly tidy clothes. “…Mm.”
The young nurse tried hard to maintain her professional demeanor as she stepped forward. “Miss Xing, this is your discharge form. You’ll need to sign it.”
She handed over the form and glanced back and forth between the two of them. In the end, she couldn’t hold back her reminder. “After discharge, it’s still advisable to rest moderately. The fractured arm in particular needs protection, so avoid any strenuous exercise for the time being…”
Jiang Nian really couldn’t hold it in any longer. She covered her mouth and turned away, her shoulders shaking nonstop.
Xing Enxi: “…”
She signed her name with her head bowed so low she couldn’t lift it.
Even Wanqi Lang’s thick skin felt a rare flush of heat. “Mm-hmm, got it. Don’t worry, Nurse Sister. We’ll definitely be careful.”
Once the form was finally signed and the young nurse—who had struggled to keep her expression in check—had been seen off, the room was left with only Jiang Nian and the two embarrassed women.
Jiang Nian finally turned back around, her smile not yet faded. “Well, look at you two. Fresh out of a serious illness, and you’ve still got plenty of energy.”
“Oh, come on, let’s go, let’s go,” Wanqi Lang quickly found a way to save face for herself. “Isn’t Zhiwei still waiting downstairs? We don’t want to keep her waiting too long. Let’s head out.”
She pushed Xing Enxi and made a straight escape.
Downstairs, Shen Zhiwei had driven a low-key black SUV that day. It sat quietly in the parking spot, with the window rolled down a third of the way, revealing the perfect contour of her profile and her impeccably neat updo.
When Shen Zhiwei saw them come out, she waved. “Get in the car.”
Jiang Nian, seated in the passenger seat, thought back to what had just happened, and the corners of her mouth refused to cooperate. She desperately suppressed her laughter—she had laughed the whole way there, after all.
“What’s so funny?” Shen Zhiwei kept her eyes on the road ahead, sensing Jiang Nian’s little movements.
“Pfft… just now…” As soon as Jiang Nian opened her mouth, Wanqi Lang, sitting in the back, pinched her hard on the lower back.
“Hiss!”
Jiang Nian sucked in a sharp breath and whipped her head around to glare at Wanqi Lang in pain. Wanqi Lang desperately signaled her through the rearview mirror, making a throat-slitting threat and then clasping her hands in a pleading gesture.
Jiang Nian felt both the sting and amusement, so she swallowed the words on the tip of her tongue. She let out two dry laughs at Shen Zhiwei. “Nothing, really. Just that Enxi-jie is finally discharged. I’m thrilled. I’ll fill you in on the details when we get home.”
Shen Zhiwei had witnessed the whole exchange and arched a brow in understanding. She didn’t press further.
The car drove steadily along, and Shen Zhiwei glanced at Wanqi Lang through the rearview mirror. “A-Lang, are we dropping Enxi off at her old place?”
“Ah? No!” Wanqi Lang sat up straight and rattled off the address of a neighborhood.
“Hm?” Xing Enxi looked at her in confusion. She knew that neighborhood—it was close to Shen Zhiwei’s company and famous in the area for its quality residences, with rents that weren’t cheap. “Why there?”
Wanqi Lang cleared her throat. “Your old place is a rundown dump. No elevator is bad enough, but the hallway lights go out every few days, leaving it pitch black at night—way too dangerous. I asked a friend to find you a new spot. It’s close to your company, good security, full facilities.”
Something stirred in Xing Enxi’s heart. She hadn’t expected Wanqi Lang to have thought of all that, but then the issue of rent came to mind. “How much is the rent? Is it expensive?”
She knew Wanqi Lang had money, but she didn’t want to owe her too many favors, especially now that their relationship had just started to show some subtle progress.
“Not expensive at all,” Wanqi Lang waved it off. “My buddy Luo Hao has a place sitting empty. When she heard I needed it, she gave it to me at a friends’ rate… uh… fifteen hundred a month.”
“Fifteen hundred?” Xing Enxi’s brows furrowed. She didn’t follow the rental market closely, but she knew the average there—even a decent studio went for more than a thousand. “Wanqi Lang, be honest. How much is it really?”
“It’s true! Why would I lie to you!” Wanqi Lang’s gaze began to wander. “My buddy’s just super generous and doesn’t care about that bit of cash. Mainly, the place was just sitting empty anyway…”
Her voice grew less and less convincing as she went on.
Shen Zhiwei and Jiang Nian listened in silence. Every time Wanqi Lang bragged, she brought up this nonexistent buddy of hers, Luo Hao.
Little Luo Hao, full of hot air.
The car pulled into the neighborhood gates. Exquisite landscaping, tidy roads, security guards in crisp uniforms saluting as they let them through.
The car stopped in front of a building. Wanqi Lang led the group with familiar ease, swiping a dedicated elevator card and heading straight to the upper floors.
Wanqi Lang opened the heavy security door.
A sense of openness and luxury hit them head-on. This wasn’t some ordinary apartment—it was an unbeatable penthouse with panoramic views.
Floor-to-ceiling windows stretched like a massive screen, unobstructed, taking in the entire city skyline. The layout was square and grand, full of spatial depth. The high-ceilinged living room connected to an open kitchen and dining area. There weren’t many pieces of furniture like the sofa, coffee table, and dining table, but they were clearly high-end designer items at a glance. A few thriving large potted plants stood in the corners.
With specs this top-tier, fifteen hundred? That wouldn’t even cover the property fees plus utilities.
Xing Enxi stood in the entryway, taking in the scene before her. Then she turned her head, her gaze sharp as a knife, fixed on Wanqi Lang, who had already started scratching her head beside her.
“I’ll ask you one last time. Whose place is this, really? And who is that buddy of yours?”
Wanqi Lang felt her scalp tingle under that stare, her eyes darting even more. “It’s… it’s…”
“Did you rent it? If you bought it, show me the contract.” Xing Enxi pressed closer.
Wanqi Lang saw she couldn’t hide it anymore. She hung her head, her voice as tiny as a mosquito’s hum.
“Fine, I’ll confess… Actually, this place… is mine.”
“And then?” Xing Enxi had suspected as much.
Wanqi Lang twisted her fingers and began to explain.
“It was a long time ago. Back then, my bar hadn’t opened yet, and I was… cough, just idling around all day. My old man got fed up with me, thought I looked bad wandering everywhere,”
She pointed at Shen Zhiwei, who had been standing quietly to the side like set dressing.
“Just then, Zhiwei’s company was around here. To make it easy to hang out with her—and to shut up my old man, make it look like I had some real business going—I bought this place.”
“…”
Xing Enxi was speechless. That was so very Wanqi Lang.
Shen Zhiwei let out a timely “Mm,” corroborating the absurd reason.
Seeing Xing Enxi fall silent, Wanqi Lang hurried to explain. “Don’t get the wrong idea. I didn’t mean to trick you. I just worried you wouldn’t want to stay here. Look, the place was empty anyway. If you move in, you can help keep an eye on it, add some life to the space. Really! No lie!”
Xing Enxi truly had no defense against her. She rubbed her brow and sighed deeply in exasperation. “Next time you make up an excuse, could it at least be a little believable?”
Wanqi Lang’s eyes lit up at those words—that meant she accepted, right?
“Good, good, good. I promise, next time it’ll be a solid one.” She seized the opening without noticing anything off in her phrasing. Like a kid showing off a treasure, she pulled Xing Enxi’s uninjured arm and led her inside. “Come on, come on, take a look around. The sunlight’s amazing! I had someone clean it spotless on purpose. The mattress in the master bedroom? I picked it out myself—guaranteed comfy…”
Jiang Nian watched Wanqi Lang’s overly eager display and internally screamed that she was hooked.
Sunlight poured through the massive floor-to-ceiling windows, spilling across the gleaming floors and onto Xing Enxi. She listened to Wanqi Lang’s nonstop chatter about the lighting and ventilation. Though she found the whole setup a bit over the top, a warm current still flowed through her heart.
Fine.
For the sake of all this thoughtfulness, she’d stay. Worst case, she’d pay her back the market-rate rent bit by bit later on. Xing Enxi amused herself with the thought and let Wanqi Lang pull her into this space that now belonged to her.
