It's Hard to Be the Female Lead's Best Friend (Apocalypse) GL - Chapter 10
Shu Jingyun’s trembling, fearful heart gradually calmed. She leaned against the wall and stood up, wiped away her tears, opened the balcony door, and walked in alone.
“Ah, wait,” Cheng Ziyu followed closely.
This building wasn’t large, only two stories high, but inside were various dazzling machines, some already disassembled and casually tossed on the ground.
Cheng Ziyu saw Shu Jingyun rummaging through things. Looking at her bloodshot eyes, which seemed to contain the rage of a lioness, she appeared ready to fight zombies.
Suddenly, Cheng Ziyu felt a pale, slender hand gently rest on her shoulder, startling her back three steps: “Ah… what are you doing?”
She clutched her little heart, truly scared of the female lead.
Gu Qingli saw the girl’s eyes still wide with fright and her small mouth tightly pursed. Her originally haggard face showed a hint of pathos. The girl’s fear didn’t seem feigned, which made Gu Qingli’s eyes instantly narrow in a cold glare.
Cheng Ziyu received the female lead’s gaze and was so scared she turned her back to her, believing that out of sight, out of mind.
Gu Qingli gave a cold, angry smirk. As she passed Cheng Ziyu, she left two words: “Very good.”
Cheng Ziyu still clutched her startled little heart, feeling that the female lead had been extremely angry just now.
“Sister Qing is very kind, you don’t need to be so afraid of her,” Qin Qingyan said, still covering her shy face. The lingering happiness made her feel somewhat favorably towards Cheng Ziyu.
Cheng Ziyu couldn’t help but mumble, “She’s good to you, not to me.”
“Huh?”
“Oh!” Cheng Ziyu waved her hand, giving an awkward smile, “Never mind, let’s find some handy weapons.”
“Mm!”
Shu Jingyun hefted a hammer, then swung it left and right, as if hitting non-existent air zombies. Her whole demeanor became much sharper: “This is my boyfriend’s clubroom. He loves these mechanical things. See if there’s anything you can use for self-defense.”
Cheng Ziyu glanced at a massive weapon nearby, resembling an ancient, large crossbow, but this crossbow had been modified, and its arrowhead polished.
“My boyfriend used this to set up the ropes, but… in the end, it didn’t really serve any purpose,” Shu Jingyun said again, her eyes reddening.
Cheng Ziyu didn’t know how to comfort her. She walked to her side and could only pat her shoulder: “How could it be useless? Didn’t you and we survive?”
“Mm!” Shu Jingyun wiped away her tears. “You should also find a weapon. Neither the speed nor the strength of zombies are something we can contend with.”
“No need, I’ll use my watermelon knife.”
Not far away, Qin Qingyan found a backpack and took out a hydraulic pliers, screwdrivers, and other hardware tools, as well as a steel pipe.
Seeing this, Cheng Ziyu’s opinion of her slightly changed. This female supporting character, apart from trying to steal the male lead and secretly tripping up the female lead, was much stronger than the other girls.
Gu Qingli, meanwhile, circled around but couldn’t find anything suitable. Instead, she naturally walked over to Cheng Ziyu: “Give me your knife.”
Cheng Ziyu: “…” That was her knife.
But she couldn’t offend the female lead.
Cheng Ziyu obediently handed her the watermelon knife.
Gu Qingli’s kind eyes scrutinized Cheng Ziyu. Seeing the girl’s obedient and compliant demeanor, which was quite pleasing, she finally gave her a soft smile: “Don’t worry, follow me, and you won’t lose out.”
My goodness!
The female lead smiled gently at her.
But she always felt that smile was rather eerie.
Cheng Ziyu returned a smile: “Mm, I’ll stick close to you, and go nowhere else.”
Cling to her like glue!
Gu Qingli raised an eyebrow, feeling the girl’s smile was a bit fake and annoying, yet she couldn’t find fault with it: “Mm.”
Her weapon was gone.
She had to look for something else to use, but the surroundings were mostly half-finished machinery, nothing useful at all.
Cheng Ziyu tried to pick up a steel pipe, but it was hard to swing in her hand. Thinking of her own athletic incompetence, she decided against it.
She put it back where it was.
Cheng Ziyu could only pick up a longer screwdriver nearby and tried a few thrusting movements. It was very smooth and had no weight.
Hmm, not bad, not bad. Just stab it into the zombie’s head, quick, accurate, and deadly! It should be fine.
Qin Qingyan finished packing her backpack. Seeing Cheng Ziyu comically waving the screwdriver, she couldn’t help but chuckle and walk over to Gu Qingli: “Sister Qing, where should we go?”
Subtly, Gu Qingli was gradually becoming the leader.
Gu Qingli’s straight brows furrowed in thought for a long time before she spoke: “There’s a warehouse behind the large supermarket in the southern part of Su City. It should have a large supply of food, but there might be many zombies nearby.”
“We need a car. Who here can drive?” Shu Jingyun wasn’t afraid; on the contrary, she was eager to try. She knew that with so much stuff, a car was essential for both transportation and storing food.
Cheng Ziyu shook her head. She was poor. She couldn’t afford a car, and her dream was to earn a car and a house herself, but it had never been realized.
Qin Qingyan also shook her head: “I just enrolled in driving school and haven’t had time to learn yet. If none of you can drive, I can try my best.”
Gu Qingli said softly, “I’ll do it!”
Cheng Ziyu frowned. Logically, Gu Qingli shouldn’t know how to drive at this point.
Qin Qingyan was a bit surprised. They were in the same dorm, and she clung to Gu Qingli every day: “When did Sister Qing learn to drive?”
“Because I’m a top student,” Gu Qingli said, her eyes flashing, being vague. She gently patted Qin Qingyan’s head, “Alright, let’s head out before the sun sets.”
Head pat!
Qin Qingyan’s eyes gleamed, her mind a blur. She clenched her hands, almost “awooing” for her goddess: “Let’s go!”
Gu Qingli smiled faintly: “I’ll take the lead.”
Cheng Ziyu naturally followed closely behind the female lead.
Gu Qingli opened the main door, and several zombies quickly lunged. The watermelon knife in her hand spun skillfully, slicing off a zombie’s head.
She smiled slightly: “Not bad.”
Qin Qingyan’s heart pounded with excitement. Her goddess was graceful and agile in her eyes, her long legs hooking and kicking with effortless fluidity. Her slender figure, blocking everyone, appeared tall and dependable.
But in Cheng Ziyu’s eyes, the female lead seemed strange in every way. Before she could think further, a zombie lunged at her, scaring her into closing her eyes and poking it with her screwdriver!
She missed!
“Roar—”
Shu Jingyun behind her had no time to save her. A watermelon knife swiftly flew past Qin Qingyan, directly stabbing the zombie’s forehead. A single blow to the soul: “So powerful!”
Cheng Ziyu opened her eyes to see Gu Qingli’s playful gaze and the fallen zombie: “Uh… thank you.”
“You’re welcome.” Gu Qingli pulled out the watermelon knife, gave a slight flick, and the pus and bl00d on the blade instantly fell to the ground. “Next time you want to close your eyes and wait to die, do it somewhere far away.”
“Uh… hehe…” The female lead was so sharp-tongued.
Cheng Ziyu was still grateful in her heart, even though she was a bit sharp-tongued. But closing her eyes and waiting to die was indeed her fault. Besides, these were just early-stage zombies; their hearing was keen, but their movements weren’t fast.
However, wasn’t the female lead a little too strong?
Cheng Ziyu always felt as if the other party was a veteran who had been through the wringer in the apocalypse.
“Idiot… snap out of it…”
Another zombie staggered and lunged. Its face was covered in dark, viscous fluid; as it approached, Cheng Ziyu smelled the stench of cooked fish that had gone bad from sitting out too long, radiating a rotten, sour smell!
Cheng Ziyu inadvertently stumbled backward, her heart pounding furiously. Even though her mind was a bit muddled, she instinctively knew to protect herself.
Cheng Ziyu raised her screwdriver, preparing to stab it. At that moment, Shu Jingyun from the side gave it a blow with a hammer: “Crack!”
The zombie’s head instantly split open like a watermelon!
“Thanks!” Cheng Ziyu swallowed.
She seemed to be the weakest.
“Roar!” A group of zombies continuously converged, seemingly having discovered them. They chased frantically.
“Quick…” Gu Qingli turned and pulled Cheng Ziyu, running, with the other two following closely.
Gu Qingli had long legs and was slightly taller than Cheng Ziyu. Although she was being pulled along, Cheng Ziyu, being bad at sports, still found it somewhat strenuous to run.
“Hurry up,” Gu Qingli pulled again.
The group ran at top speed.
Cheng Ziyu felt a burning sensation in her chest, making it hard to breathe.
“Roar—”
A zombie’s roar attracted even more zombies.
Gu Qingli felt Cheng Ziyu slowing down. She looked back and saw large groups of zombies chasing them: “Cheng Ziyu, if you keep dawdling, believe it or not, I’ll throw you to the zombies.”
“No…” Cheng Ziyu didn’t want to be torn apart.
She had just managed to escape; she couldn’t die now.
This was a race against death.
She gritted her teeth, her legs moving like unconscious machines, pulling back and alternating rapidly. At this moment, her chest was not only burning, but her little face was also flushed red.
Fortunately, there was an SUV parked not far from the school gate. Cheng Ziyu looked at Gu Qingli’s slender back, not wanting the female lead to think she was useless.
So, when they reached the car, Cheng Ziyu, without even catching her breath, went to the driver’s side and used the screwdriver to pry open the door.
It was the apocalypse now, so even if the door was pried open, no one would say anything. But with the zombies getting closer and time running out, Cheng Ziyu tried to calm her anxious heart.
She clasped her hands together to prevent trembling caused by fear.
The screwdriver moved little by little into the door crack. When she felt the latch, she heard a “click.”
Gu Qingli opened the door: “The car wasn’t locked.”
Cheng Ziyu: “…” Hehe!
Qin Qingyan quickly got into the back seat, unable to resist a sarcastic remark: “If this car had been locked, and you pried it open like that, wouldn’t the alarm attract all the zombies for a feast?”
Cheng Ziyu pouted and remained silent!
Shu Jingyun’s bitter lips couldn’t help but curve into a smile.
Gu Qingli suddenly grew anxious and reached out to Cheng Ziyu: “Give me the screwdriver, quick.”
Cheng Ziyu quickly handed it to her, then turned and got into the passenger seat, her attention completely drawn to the approaching zombies.
Gu Qingli removed the cover with extreme speed.
The car still hadn’t started. With the zombies getting closer, only a few meters away, Cheng Ziyu’s heart pounded too fast, and her breathing was slightly ragged: “Hurry.”
“Vroom!” The car started just in time!
Gu Qingli stepped on the clutch, spun the steering wheel, and the car rapidly reversed and spun, driving away from the school.
