It's Hard to Be the Female Lead's Best Friend (Apocalypse) GL - Chapter 14
The darkness deepened, and the streetlights around them no longer shone brightly as they had a few days prior. Now, countless twinkling stars hung in the sky, their scattered points illuminating the night in shades of pale blue.
Ordinary zombies quieted down at night, as if their internal biological clocks still functioned. However, if anyone made a noise that disturbed them, they would likely go wild again.
A single car headlight shone into the darkness, appearing somewhat abrupt and lonely. Its faint glow only illuminated a few dozen meters around them.
They found a high-end landscaped garden, where many villas were built. The winding paths were overgrown with lush flowers and trees, and occasionally, a few zombies in designer suits wandered around.
Their skin had lost its vitality and elasticity, but their hair was meticulously slicked back, clearly a testament to the effectiveness of hair wax.
Gu Qingli slowed the car and found a corner villa. It was surrounded by trees and water, with no zombies wandering nearby, and a fence to keep out uninvited guests.
The fence gate was tightly locked with a chain, and faint, flickering candlelight could be vaguely seen through the villa’s windows.
Cheng Ziyu squinted. It was clear the occupants didn’t want anyone inside: “Or… should we find another villa?”
Gu Qingli arched an eyebrow, her thin lips appearing somewhat cold: “Qingyan, go pry open the lock.”
“Yes, ma’am!”
Qin Qingyan took the hydraulic pliers and got out of the car.
With a “snap,” the large lock was easily cut, and the car smoothly drove through the fence and parked to the side.
After Gu Qingli got out, she carried a bag of rice in one hand and a large barrel of mineral water in the other. The bag of rice weighed fifty catties (around 55 lbs), which would normally be very strenuous for a girl to carry by hand.
However, Gu Qingli’s slender, long arms moved freely with the weight, showing no signs of effort. Cheng Ziyu rubbed her irritated forehead; she was 70% sure Gu Qingli had activated an ability.
Spatial ability. In the early stages, the female lead could only store items and simply enhance her body. As her ability grew, the female lead’s spatial power would gradually become more formidable.
Gu Qingli placed the rice and water at the doorway, tidied her slightly messy hair, revealed a kind smile, and gently knocked on the door.
“Knock, knock…”
After waiting for more than ten seconds, the door remained tightly shut!
Gu Qingli’s smile stiffened slightly. She knocked impatiently, with such force that the sound echoed around them: “Open the door now.”
Cheng Ziyu had no doubt that if the door wasn’t opened, the female lead would be willing to go down with them. This female lead seemed like a true villain.
But…
The bl00d on Gu Qingli’s calf had dried, and even the edge of her jeans was stiff with dried bl00d. Cheng Ziyu didn’t know if her wound was infected.
She pursed her lips, ultimately feeling bad for the female lead.
So, Cheng Ziyu walked to the door, knocking and kicking: “If you don’t open the door for this old lady, I’ll crash the car through your door and we’ll all feed the zombies together!”
Gu Qingli froze. The girl in front of her had a baby face, but her frowning, serious expression was strikingly captivating, especially her menacing yet utterly harmless gestures, which were truly adorable.
Qin Qingyan followed suit, honking the horn.
Perhaps fearing the noise would attract zombies, the gate was indeed slowly opened, revealing a woman with an above-average appearance looking timidly at them.
“Dai Xiaoya!”
Cheng Ziyu’s expression was somewhat complex. She never expected to meet her old friend in this way today. The person in front of her was no longer as carefree and enthusiastic as before.
More than anything, she felt a sense of gloominess!
Why would a person change so quickly?
What exactly had the other person experienced?
Upon hearing her name, Dai Xiaoya’s timid gaze turned indifferent. She seemed to have no surprise at the sudden appearance of her old friend: “I didn’t expect it to be you!”
Years of friendship, what a joke.
A joke that Cheng Ziyu had indulged in alone!
Dai Xiaoya was Cheng Ziyu’s colleague and friend, and it was she who had pushed the problematic goods onto Cheng Ziyu.
During this period of strange encounters, Cheng Ziyu hadn’t had much time to think about these things. Besides, since she had transmigrated, she thought she might not meet the same people.
But she was wrong. She even had the illusion that this was her original world, leaving her somewhat at a loss.
Dai Xiaoya’s cheerful smile from the past flashed before her eyes. Whenever she was alone and cooped up at home, Dai Xiaoya would always drag her out to the streets. They would eat together, watch movies together, gossip together, and curse their workshop director, that pervert, together.
Cheng Ziyu wanted to ask her, did their friendship truly mean less than these benefits? But a flood of words clogged her throat, making her incredibly uncomfortable.
The truth was right before her, wasn’t it? Dai Xiaoya’s indifferent gaze just now had already given her the answer.
Gu Qingli suddenly patted her shoulder, stepping in front of her and blocking their view of each other: “Hello, may we stay the night?”
The cold night wind blew gently, making Gu Qingli’s soft smile tinged with coldness: “May we?”
Dai Xiaoya stared at her in a daze. Gu Qingli’s charming expression made people instinctively feel goodwill and a desire for closeness: “I’m sorry, I advise you to go somewhere else.”
Cheng Ziyu frowned upon hearing this.
“Sister, it’s the apocalypse now. Everyone should help each other to survive! Look, we’re very sincere, we even brought food to share with you,” Qin Qingyan said, stepping in front of Gu Qingli again and pointing to the rice beside them.
Dai Xiaoya hesitated slightly. The girls in front of her looked very cheerful, seemingly untouched by the harsh environment of the apocalypse: “Are you sure you want to come in?”
Qin Qingyan paused, not quite understanding her meaning: “What, can’t we come in?”
“Oh…” A man suddenly put his arm around Dai Xiaoya. His lazy eyes brightened when he saw the three at the door. “Oh, it’s a few beauties. Come in quickly, it’s dangerous outside with all the zombies.”
Dai Xiaoya’s eyes clearly showed disgust.
Qin Qingyan blinked, then suddenly understood. She deliberately tilted her head and smiled, pretending to be harmless: “Thank you, big brother.”
“You’re welcome, come in!” The man smiled, his narrowed eyes extremely lewd.
Qin Qingyan and Cheng Ziyu helped Shu Jingyun into the house.
Cheng Ziyu looked around. The villa had many rooms. Besides a few men she didn’t recognize, her workshop director, Chen Xiaobin, was also among them.
A few days into the apocalypse had made him much thinner.
Chen Xiaobin, who had been sitting with his legs crossed, playing poker with the others to pass the time, immediately dropped his cards when he saw them: “Cheng Ziyu, you’re still alive.”
Chen Xiaobin’s surprised expression disgusted Cheng Ziyu. He had a wife, yet only Dai Xiaoya was by his side, clearly having abandoned his spouse.
“Yes,” Cheng Ziyu replied with a perfunctory smile. “My friend fainted from fright. I’ll take her to a room first.”
Chen Xiaobin pointed to an empty room: “Go to that room, no one’s sleeping there.”
“Thank you!”
In the room, there was only a large bed, a computer desk, and a comfy computer chair. The two dumped Shu Jingyun onto the bed. Qin Qingyan clapped her hands: “You were a bit like Sister Qing just now.”
“Was I?” Cheng Ziyu touched the lingering fake smile on her lips. “If I was, I was. I don’t even bother giving that kind of person a glance.”
In the living room, several men approached with beaming smiles, surrounding Gu Qingli.
“Hehe! What’s your name, beautiful?” Chen Xiaobin smoothed his hair with both hands, asking politely.
“Um…” Gu Qingli glanced at the daggers at their waists, revealing a shy smile. “Big brothers, we’re a bit tired today and want to rest. How about we chat tomorrow?”
“Alright, sister, go get some rest!”
As Gu Qingli turned, her smile chilled.
“This girl is really pretty,” a man next to her said, stroking his chin and narrowing his eyes.
“Alright, your eyeballs are about to pop out. Go carry the rice into the kitchen, Xiaoya, go cook. I’m starving,” Chen Xiaobin urged from the side.
“Hey, alright. We need strength after eating.”
••••
Qin Qingyan lay down on the bed, stretching: “A big bed is so comfortable. Sister Qing, do you want to sleep together?”
Gu Qingli closed the door, walked to her side, and rubbed her head: “No need, you sleep well.”
This time, Qin Qingyan wasn’t as dizzy as before. Instead, she complained: “Look at your germophobia. What’s wrong with sleeping together?”
Gu Qingli smiled: “Good girl!”
“Then I’ll treat your wound first!” Qin Qingyan sat up again and took out scissors and water from her backpack.
“No need, I’ll do it myself.”
Qin Qingyan sulked, tossed the items aside, lay on the bed, and pulled the blanket over her head.
Gu Qingli sat in the computer chair, cutting open her pant leg with a knife. The wound on her calf was healing, leaving only a scar. She twisted open a bottle and cleaned it with water.
“If you’re not sleeping, then I will.” Cheng Ziyu lay down on the other side. As soon as she lay down, her entire body sank into the soft, elastic mattress, which perfectly supported every part of her body.
This allowed her tired body and mind to relax.
Gu Qingli glanced over, her line of sight perfectly catching Cheng Ziyu’s every move, including when she turned over and stuck out her backside.
The round, pert buttocks were right in front of her, emitting an alluring scent. Gu Qingli gently nudged them with her foot. Even with shoes on, she could feel their elasticity.
Cheng Ziyu turned around, looking puzzled.
Gu Qingli leaned closer, her smile unsettling. With a flick of her finger, a bl00d-red stone lay quietly in her palm, like a witch’s prop.
The stone had subtle veins on it. These were the nerve pathways connected to the zombie’s central nervous system. Breaking just one of them would stop the zombie’s movements.
Cheng Ziyu’s pupils contracted.
This was a crystal core, encased in a layer of bloody gel. This gel was the source of the poison and needed to be peeled off. Ability users could consume it directly to enhance themselves.
“Tsk!”
Gu Qingli smiled, then leaned another inch closer, trying to discern the other’s expression: “You don’t seem… surprised?”
“Do you also have an ability?” Cheng Ziyu blinked, propped herself up, and carefully examined the crystal core in her hand: “So amazing, how did this lump of flesh appear?”
It was truly difficult for her. To get closer to the female lead, she had to act; but because of this, she vaguely realized that the female lead had never trusted her and was constantly testing her.
Qin Qingyan heard this and sat up: “Wow, where did that lump of meat come from? It looks delicious.”
Indeed, the crystal core looked like a shiny, hard lump of meat. If grilled in oil, it would surely make one’s mouth water.
