It's Hard to Be the Female Lead's Best Friend (Apocalypse) GL - Chapter 16
Occasionally, a flash of light would illuminate the sky, briefly lighting up the area around the villa. In the distance, the swaying zombies were lit up like grotesque ghouls, with rotten skin and vacant eyes.
“Is it going to rain?”
A flash of lightning and a peal of thunder startled Qin Qingyan, chasing away her nascent sleepiness. She got out of bed and went to Cheng Ziyu’s side, looking outside, a slight shiver running down her spine.
Cheng Ziyu knew about this rain because it was the first rainfall after the apocalypse began in the novel. And because of this rain, both ability users and zombies accelerated their evolution, making it difficult for ordinary people to survive. This rain was a test of survival.
“This isn’t natural rain; it’s artificial rain,” Gu Qingli said vaguely, her eyes still closed.
Qin Qingyan exclaimed, “Artificial rain?”
Cheng Ziyu looked back at the sound. Gu Qingli looked composed and didn’t seem to intend to explain.
Cheng Ziyu irritably scratched her hair. Her already messy hair became a bird’s nest. This female lead was too difficult to deal with. Was it really necessary to speak in riddles at a time like this?
The thunder outside grew louder, and the previously swaying zombies began to grow agitated: “Hungry!”
Qin Qingyan looked out the window and saw figures moving. “Are we really safe staying here?”
“Besides staying here, we can’t leave for now. Let’s make the best of it,” Cheng Ziyu closed the window and drew the curtains, stretching her shoulders. Having no rest in the middle of the night, she felt uncomfortable all over. “I’m going to the restroom to wash my face.”
“I’ll go too.”
Qin Qingyan brought her backpack.
In the mansion, each room had its own bathroom. They brushed their teeth and washed their faces, shaking off some of their sleepiness.
[Com…fort…]
Cheng Ziyu froze. After rinsing her mouth, she rushed to the bathroom window. She saw a zombie in a suit looking up, mouth agape, thoroughly enjoying the rainy night.
“What’s wrong?” Qin Qingyan wrung out her towel.
“I heard the zombie talk again.”
“What did it say?”
“Just ‘comfortable’.”
Qin Qingyan, wiping her face, couldn’t help but cover her mouth and burst out laughing: “Haha… your ability sounds so useless.”
Cheng Ziyu couldn’t refute it; it did seem a bit useless.
“Knock, knock…” The door was knocked again.
They exchanged glances and exited the restroom.
Gu Qingli’s pale face showed fatigue. She was still lying motionless, unclear if she was deeply asleep.
The person outside paused, then knocked again: “Ziyu, it’s me. Open the door!”
“Director Chen, let’s talk when it’s light!” Cheng Ziyu had no good feelings for this kind of person. When she worked at the factory, he always tried to exploit her.
“Rumble—”
At that moment, a torrential rain poured down from the sky, with flashes of lightning continuously streaking across the heavens, illuminating the land.
“Alright!”
Chen Xiaobin’s face, illuminated by a flash of lightning, revealed a sinister and lewd smile. He was juggling a screwdriver in his hand and began to dismantle the door lock.
The few men behind him chuckled, wiping their lips, seemingly impatient. One of the men was tall, with a pale, lifeless face and somewhat dull eyes.
Dai Xiaoya sat in the living room, arms crossed, watching coldly. These men were all lecherous. These past few days, being around them, she had been living a subhuman existence.
She had thought it would be better to die.
Unfortunately, she was afraid of death.
A rustling sound came from the door. Cheng Ziyu saw signs of the lock loosening and immediately realized they were trying to force their way in: “Damn it, they’re trying to break in!”
“Shh!”
Qin Qingyan gripped the scissors, hiding by the door.
Cheng Ziyu stood in the center of the doorway.
“Click.” The door lock was removed.
Chen Xiaobin, hunched over like a thief, pushed open the door. Seeing Cheng Ziyu’s blank expression, he couldn’t help but rub his hands: “Sweetheart, I’m coming in.”
Suddenly!
A sharp pair of scissors abruptly appeared!
Chen Xiaobin’s legs went weak from fright, and he sat on the floor. The man who had been right behind him was caught off guard by the sudden sharp object. His neck felt an instant, excruciating pain, and bl00d spurted before his eyes.
His pupils contracted. He clutched his neck, his eyes filled with terror. His body slowly lost control, and his eyelids slowly closed.
“Ah—” Chen Xiaobin was drenched in bl00d. After he reacted, rage surged to his head: “You stinky b1tch, you tried to kill me?!”
Cheng Ziyu’s face was pale, and so was Qin Qingyan’s. Clearly, it was their first time killing someone, and they were still afraid, but they had made a decisive judgment.
“Go!”
Several men stormed into the room. One of the thuggish men drew a dagger: “The woman lying over there is mine.”
“Dream on! You dare touch my goddess, I’ll take your lives!” Qin Qingyan attacked again with the scissors.
The thuggish man was prepared. He hunched his waist and reached out, slashing with his dagger. Qin Qingyan instinctively retreated to avoid it.
Gu Qingli opened her eyes and rubbed her forehead. She stood up, her tall figure matching the thuggish man’s height: “I just wanted to rest a bit.”
The thuggish man swung his knife, openly scrutinizing her from head to toe. The girl had a high nose bridge, and her slightly furrowed brows added a touch of melancholic beauty, making him unconsciously take a step closer: “It’s fine, we can rest after we’re done playing.”
“Rumble—”
Lightning flashed again, illuminating the dark room with an eerie glow. Several men blocked the doorway, like beasts, forcing them to take half a step back.
Chen Xiaobin lunged at Cheng Ziyu: “Sweetheart.”
Although Chen Xiaobin had lost a lot of weight, it didn’t change his greasy face. He looked sloppy, and his yellow teeth were disgusting.
Cheng Ziyu turned sideways and ran to the window. Chen Xiaobin slowly approached, blocking her path. He had a lecherous smile on his face, stepping closer to her bit by bit.
In contrast, Qin Qingyan and Gu Qingli were constrained, as they needed to take care of the unconscious Shu Jingyun.
“Sweetheart, are you still distracted at a time like this?” Chen Xiaobin held her tightly. “That’s what I like about you. I used to think, if you cried under me, you’d be so pitiful to behold.”
Ugh—
Cheng Ziyu twisted her body, trying to break free.
Chen Xiaobin was very strong, especially at a time like this. Due to his excitement, his strength was even greater. He felt the beauty in his arms squirming. His whole body felt like it was on fire, and he could no longer bear it: “Sweetheart!”
He puckered his lips, ready to kiss her.
Cheng Ziyu was enraged. She headbutted his disgusting mouth.
“Bang!”
Chen Xiaobin clutched his mouth, a trickle of bl00d oozing out: “Damn it, you ungrateful b1tch!”
“Bang!” The window was suddenly knocked.
Everyone froze, looking towards the sound.
Through the curtain crack, they saw a zombie in a suit knocking on the window with its head. With each knock, its precarious eyes swayed back and forth: “Bang!”
“Ugh!” The pale man suddenly vomited.
The thuggish man scoffed: “Already throwing up?”
Gu Qingli turned around and helped Shu Jingyun up. Her tone was gentle, yet it sent shivers down their spines: “He’s not vomiting because of the ugly zombie. You should think about how to save yourselves first, otherwise, your lower bodies will be quiet forever.”
The thuggish man was confused: “What do you mean?”
“Bang!” The suit zombie hit again.
Chen Xiaobin was scared witless. He was the first to run out of the room: “Let’s get out of here, this isn’t safe.”
The man who was vomiting was still puking. He had thrown up all the food he had eaten that night and kept going… until he vomited stomach bl00d.
The man beside him felt a little disgusted. Enduring the foul smell, he patted his back: “Just throw up and get it over with, no need to keep going.”
Cheng Ziyu followed Gu Qingli to the living room, only to find the living room door tightly locked with a chain. Her emotions almost broke down: “Chen Xiaobin, is there nothing but bugs in your damn brain?”
“That’s right!” Chen Xiaobin rubbed the bridge of his nose. Thankfully, no bones were broken. “It’s the apocalypse! If we don’t have fun now, are we going to wait until we’re in hell to have fun?”
“Bang!” The main door was suddenly pounded.
Gu Qingli looked around. Outside the dim window, flashes of lightning occasionally illuminated a group of zombies moving about: “Barricade the door.”
Cheng Ziyu quickly ran to the door and pushed the movable shoe cabinet against it. Qin Qingyan pushed the sofa; but it was too heavy, so Cheng Ziyu turned back to help push it together.
Chen Xiaobin and Dai Xiaoya, frightened, hid behind another sofa. Outside the villa, zombies were gradually surrounding it. With nowhere else to go, they were intermittently slamming their bodies against the villa.
“Ah—”
A scream made the zombies pound the door even more frantically.
Cheng Ziyu turned around and saw the man who had just been vomiting suddenly latch onto another man and begin to tear at him. The thuggish man had already been scared and run out.
“Ah—Help—”
The man’s cheek was being pulled and bitten, like dough being torn apart, with strings of flesh still hanging. The bones of his face were exposed, and his white teeth were stained red with bl00d.
No matter how the man struggled, he couldn’t escape.
The zombie chewed, and in two bites, swallowed it. As if disgusted by the man’s noise, its next bite went directly for the neck. With a gentle tug, flesh, skin, and bone were all ripped out.
The ground was covered in bl00d, and a stench filled the air.
It chewed twice, and the man died. It seemed uninterested in the corpse. While still chewing, it looked at Cheng Ziyu, its pale eyeballs rolling wildly until they fixated on her.
Cheng Ziyu’s heart skipped a beat.
Gu Qingli, seeing this, put an arm around Shu Jingyun and kicked the sofa. The two, who had previously struggled, pushed the sofa as easily as a shopping cart, effectively blocking the main door.
The zombie slowly swallowed, then opened its mouth slightly: “Hungry… hungry…”
[Food… delicious…]
Cheng Ziyu’s heart pounded. The zombie was looking at her as it spoke, so its target was her. She turned and reached out, her expression anxious: “Quick, give me the scissors!”
Qin Qingyan handed them to her.
“Roar—”
The zombie ran towards her. Cheng Ziyu and Qin Qingyan widened the distance between them. It clung tightly to her, and the villa’s living room was not large, reaching its end in a flash.
It lunged, and Cheng Ziyu ducked and rolled on the ground. She stood up and aimed for its forehead, thrusting quickly. The zombie turned and lunged again, missing its mark, only hitting its neck.
“Roar!”
Another dead man slowly stood up. One side of his face was devoid of flesh, the other covered in black veins, and his neck was only half intact, causing his head to wobble precariously. His pupils gradually disappeared as he swayed towards Dai Xiaoya.
Dai Xiaoya screamed: “Ah!”
Gu Qingli pushed Shu Jingyun to Qin Qingyan: “You watch her. If there’s an opportunity, take her to the car first.”
“Okay.”
Gu Qingli glanced at Dai Xiaoya. Her eyes were cold, yet her face was beaming with a gentle smile, making her feel chillingly eerie.
She then turned to help Cheng Ziyu.
Seeing this, Dai Xiaoya could only cling tightly to Chen Xiaobin, making it difficult for Chen Xiaobin to break free on his own.
He realized that Dai Xiaoya, having done farm work for many years, had great strength: “You stinking b1tch, let go of me!”
“I’m scared…” Dai Xiaoya’s eyes pleaded.
Chen Xiaobin saw the zombie approaching step by step. He reached out and pried open her fingers. Seeing the way Dai Xiaoya’s fingers were bent, if she didn’t let go, they might be broken.
