It's Hard to Be the Female Lead's Best Friend (Apocalypse) GL - Chapter 18
Chen Xiaobin’s cheeks were completely devoid of flesh, held together only by a few tendons. His wide-open mouth could accommodate at least one human head.
At this moment, his tongue could freely contract and extend like a snake’s body. He slowly ceased his movements, his pupils having completely shrunken to the unique size of a zombie’s.
The man was scared witless; his pants were wet and emitted a foul stench: “Don’t come near me, you monster.”
Its tongue extended, not quickly. The man retreated step by step. The tip of the tongue gently licked his arm, and the barbs easily tore his skin, causing bl00d to flow.
The man cried out in pain, instinctively swinging his dagger.
“Swish!” The barb on the tip of the tongue was sliced.
“Roar—”
The zombie curled its tongue, wrapping it around the man’s arm and pulling.
“Ah—”
The force of the tongue was immense. The man’s arm made a “crack” sound, his elbow joint twisting like a towel, bones shattering. The man was dragged to the zombie’s side.
He knelt in pain, looking up at the zombie inches away. His cheeks were held by it, and the cracked face gradually expanded in his vision.
One mouth, one head!
After a brief moment of pain, the man was finally freed.
The headless body fell to the ground, bl00d spreading across the floor. In the darkness, a faint glimmer of light vaguely reflected, illuminating the chewing zombie.
It seemed dissatisfied. Its vacant eyes looked at the only four people left in the room: “Hungry!”
[Energy!]
Cheng Ziyu’s eyes immediately narrowed at the sound. This was very likely a special type of zombie. Special types not only ate living humans but also other zombies. They only pursued power, constantly devouring to evolve.
As for what they eventually evolved into, Cheng Ziyu didn’t know, because special types were extremely rare, and they also slaughtered each other, which made it difficult for them to survive into the later stages.
Most importantly, some special types would even hide their brains, or crystal cores, to protect themselves.
The zombie let out another low “roar,” but seeing that the four people didn’t seem afraid of it, it let out a long howl: “Awoo!”
The main door suddenly went quiet. Gu Qingli looked sideways and saw that a group of zombies had been driven away by the long howl. The zombies clearly sensed the danger in the room: “Qingyan, quickly take Shu Jingyun and leave.”
“Okay.”
Qin Qingyan secretly looked out the window. The zombies’ figures were hidden in the darkness. After confirming there were no zombies, she quickly ran to the door and began to move the obstacles. She kept mumbling, “This is practically blocking our own escape route!”
Gu Qingli tightened her grip on the dagger. She saw it slowly turn its head to look, then looked at Cheng Ziyu.
Finally, the zombie fixated on Gu Qingli.
“Run, its target is you!”
Gu Qingli didn’t flee. Even though her forehead was soaked with sweat, she showed no fear.
Gu Qingli saw the zombie charging fiercely. She also lunged at the zombie. As the zombie got close, it leaped, and after its body left the ground, it stretched its neck, opening its mouth wide to bite her.
Gu Qingli slid on her knees, leaning her body back, and stabbed upwards, attempting to cut the zombie in half. Unfortunately, the dagger was too short, and the zombie was too hard.
The knife pierced its abdomen, but got stuck after reaching the lower abdomen, forcing Gu Qingli to abandon the dagger. She quickly stood up sideways and retreated.
A large gash was opened in the zombie’s abdomen, exposing its intestines. Black, foul-smelling bl00d slowly dripped. This black bl00d was extremely viscous, like flour mixed with water.
“Here you go.” Cheng Ziyu quickly picked up the dagger the thuggish man had dropped and handed it to Gu Qingli. She then ran to open the window: “Qin Qingyan, climb out the window.”
Qin Qingyan turned and picked up Shu Jingyun. Cheng Ziyu stepped forward to help, lifting her to the window.
Cheng Ziyu glanced at Gu Qingli. The zombie was fast and agile. Gu Qingli could only constantly defend, and it was clear she was at a disadvantage.
She hesitated for a moment, unsure whether to help.
The zombie’s long tongue was like a demon’s, whipping around wildly. Gu Qingli dodged and rolled left and right. If the zombie hadn’t just mutated, even she would have found it difficult to avoid the attacks.
Although Gu Qingli was the female lead, if she lost, Cheng Ziyu herself would be in great danger.
Cheng Ziyu pushed Shu Jingyun to Qin Qingyan: “I’m going to help. You should be fine on your own.”
Qin Qingyan nodded: “Okay, be careful.”
“Mm!” Cheng Ziyu smiled back, then turned and re-entered the room. She had originally wanted to ask Dai Xiaoya for help, but the room was empty, with only a window open: “Dai Xiaoya, do you really hate me that much?”
Cheng Ziyu let out a bitter laugh. She composed herself. There were no weapons around, so she had to flip over the mattress and remove a long bed board.
As soon as she stepped out of the room, a long tongue lashed out like a gale. Cheng Ziyu instinctively raised the wooden board to block it. With a “snap,” the board instantly broke in half.
“Ugh!” Cheng Ziyu looked at the remaining half-length board and gasped, drawing a cold breath!
Gu Qingli rolled on the ground to avoid the long tongue, but the tongue, like an eagle in the sky, swooped down.
Without thinking, Cheng Ziyu charged at it with the half-broken wooden board, pushing hard against the zombie to pin it against the wall, holding it firmly.
The zombie roared in rage, a deafening sound that made Cheng Ziyu’s ears ring. All she heard was a “buzzing” sound, causing her a splitting headache.
Qin Qingyan had just pushed half of Shu Jingyun out the window when the tremor made her let go. Shu Jingyun slowly fell out the window. Seeing her head about to hit the ground, Qin Qingyan immediately leaned out and desperately shielded her head. Both of them safely landed outside the window.
“Watch out!” Gu Qingli shouted loudly.
Cheng Ziyu shook her head, hearing nothing. The zombie’s tongue had changed direction and was stabbing towards her, aiming directly for her heart.
A cold glint flashed before Cheng Ziyu’s eyes. She instinctively retreated, then felt a sharp pain in her arm. She looked down to see that the zombie’s tongue had carved a long gash in her arm, and bl00d flowed and dripped down.
Cheng Ziyu looked up. A dark shadow flashed by. The moonlight shining on Gu Qingli made her appear incredibly cold. She lifted her leg and stomped hard on the back of the knife.
The tip of the knife, driven by the force, pierced the zombie’s forehead and pinned it to the wall. Only then did its tongue fall.
Cheng Ziyu was confused the whole time. Only afterwards did she realize that the cold glint just now was the dagger Gu Qingli had thrown. She swallowed nervously, a lingering fear in her heart, squinting at Gu Qingli in the darkness. Only a blurred outline was visible; her face was unclear.
If the knife had veered even slightly, she herself would have been pinned to the wall. She always felt that the female lead was dark and sinister in the dark, perhaps wanting to get rid of her too.
Clinging to her was imperative, but she didn’t know how.
The moonlight made Cheng Ziyu’s face even paler, like a bloodless corpse, clearly scared stiff. Gu Qingli couldn’t help but remind her: “You’re bleeding a lot.”
The wound had completely stained her sleeve red, and bl00d dripped from her fingertips. Only then did Cheng Ziyu feel intense pain. She clutched her wound, speaking incoherently: “Am I… am I turning into a zombie? Am I going to die…”
As her body lost bl00d, her already highly strained nerves instantly made her feel dizzy. Her eyes closed, and she fell into Gu Qingli’s arms, passing out!
Gu Qingli: “…”
Qin Qingyan settled Shu Jingyun, then flipped back into the villa through the window: “Is she hurt?”
“Yes, she was injured by the zombie.”
Gu Qingli looked down at the unconscious girl in her arms, remembering her foolishness just now, and couldn’t help but curve her lips into a smile.
Qin Qingyan was stunned, then hesitated: “Then us?”
At this moment, the expression on Cheng Ziyu’s face was still frozen from before she passed out, a heartbroken look that made her appear utterly pitiable.
Gu Qingli stroked Cheng Ziyu’s hair, her tone unreadable: “Take her with us for now. If she turns into a zombie…”
Qin Qingyan nodded. She understood. If Cheng Ziyu turned into a zombie, she would be mercilessly decapitated. Though she felt sympathy, facing zombies, humans could not coexist peacefully with them.
“Qingyan, go dig out the crystal core,” Gu Qingli said, picking up Cheng Ziyu.
Qin Qingyan looked at the zombie pinned to the wall, disgusting fluid oozing from its head. She was a bit reluctant: “Sister Qing, why don’t you go yourself?”
Gu Qingli’s eyebrows held a hint of amusement: “I can go, but then you’ll have to take Cheng Ziyu to the car. But you’ll need to be careful, she might turn into a zombie halfway there.”
Upon hearing this, Qin Qingyan indeed didn’t dare to approach Cheng Ziyu. She retreated two steps and smiled sheepishly: “Sister Qing, why don’t you take her? I’ll handle rough work like digging out crystal cores.”
“Alright… then I’ll wait for you in the car.”
After Qin Qingyan saw her leave, she felt a chill run down her spine. She looked around. The dim moonlight outside the window intermittently illuminated a pile of corpses.
A foul stench and the smell of bl00d hung in the air. This was practically a live version of “Ringu”: “I’m never watching horror movies again.”
A cold wind blew in through the window!
Qin Qingyan involuntarily shivered: “Better dig it out quickly and leave… yes, yes… don’t scare yourself.”
Shu Jingyun was lying in the front passenger seat, so Gu Qingli had to place Cheng Ziyu in the back seat. As the car door opened, the light came on, dispelling a bit of the surrounding darkness.
Gu Qingli put her inside. Looking at Cheng Ziyu lying quietly, she couldn’t help but flick her forehead: “You always liked to court death in the past, crying all day in front of me. In this life, you’re still courting death, running to me.”
The girl’s quiet face still showed traces of fear.
Gu Qingli’s eyes gradually blurred. She pinched her nose, then gently stroked her eyelashes: “You look just like a kitten when you cry.”
“Ah… ah… I’m back.”
Gu Qingli snapped back to reality, realizing she and Cheng Ziyu were too close. This made her slightly annoyed, and she immediately got out of the car.
Qin Qingyan had come running, her speed and frightened expression as if some demon or ghost was chasing her.
“Sister Qing!” Qin Qingyan threw herself into Gu Qingli’s arms. “It was too terrifying just now, I felt like there was a ghost.”
Gu Qingli patted her back, comforted her for a moment, then pushed her away: “The crystal core?”
Qin Qingyan pouted, handing her a coin-sized crystal core: “It’s a bit smaller than yours.”
“No, although it’s small, its energy isn’t small,” Gu Qingli said, turning to get into the car. “Let’s leave here first.”
“Okay.”
When Qin Qingyan got into the back seat, she paused slightly, then nervously moved her foot. She sat in the car, intermittently staring at Cheng Ziyu, and every time Cheng Ziyu moved, Qin Qingyan’s heart jumped with anxiety.
The car sped off. The tall buildings around them gradually became sparse.
“Aren’t we leaving Su City?” Qin Qingyan noticed that the car’s direction wasn’t out of the city.
“No, we’re going to a hospital pharmacy. We need to stock up on medicines and also some gasoline. And Cheng Ziyu needs to stop the bleeding.”
Only then did Qin Qingyan notice that the wound on Cheng Ziyu’s arm was quite large, and bl00d was continuously flowing. If not treated promptly, even if she didn’t turn into a zombie, she would die from the wound festering or excessive bl00d loss.
The car was full of food, with nothing to stop the bleeding. Qin Qingyan hesitated for a moment: “Sister Qing, do you have any clean cloth?”
Gu Qingli casually swung her hand, and a piece of clothing landed on Qin Qingyan’s head. She tore it into rags with the dagger and carefully helped Cheng Ziyu stop the bleeding.
