It's Hard to Be the Female Lead's Best Friend (Apocalypse) GL - Chapter 2
A sudden fear gnawed at Cheng Ziyu. In the darkness, she couldn’t clearly see what the man was doing, but she had a strong feeling it would be beyond her imagination.
She turned to find a flashlight in the bedside cabinet and shone the light. In the black night, there was only a faint beam of light, and the surroundings were terrifyingly silent. She vaguely saw bl00d on the man’s back, and the angle of his head when he bent down was exceptionally strange.
“Hey! I’ve called the police, let her go right now!” She had originally intended to scare the man away with words.
Cheng Ziyu saw that the man was completely unfazed, not even turning his head. She felt a slight urgency but didn’t know what to do. She shone the light on the girl’s face again, dimly seeing the girl’s wide eyes, which seemed to reveal terror.
This sense of dread was indescribable, like seeing a demon, causing her extreme pain. This twisted, horrifying emotion infected Cheng Ziyu, and her heart began to pound rapidly; but she couldn’t just stand by and watch the girl get hurt, could she?
Cheng Ziyu suppressed her fear and resolved to rescue the girl. She turned back, intending to look for a knife in the kitchen, but she inadvertently caught sight of a computer in the room, causing her mind to freeze for a moment, a fleeting surprise.
“When… did I buy a computer?” Cheng Ziyu stared at the computer with wide eyes. The surrounding light was dim, making it feel exactly like a horror movie set; she kept thinking some terrifying ghost would leap out of the computer at any second.
Cheng Ziyu snapped back to reality and patted her cheek: “What are you thinking about at a time like this! Saving someone is more important.”
She opened the door, then froze in place for another moment.
Looking at the familiar yet strange environment of her home, she slowly walked out of the room. The front door was blocked by tables and chairs, and the living room was in disarray.
She walked slowly to the kitchen, where a large amount of food was haphazardly piled, along with a long watermelon knife.
“Wh-what’s going on?” Cheng Ziyu had a bad feeling, and this premonition was quickly confirmed.
She ran to the door, climbed onto a table, and peered out through the peephole. She saw that the opposite door was open, and the living room light was on. The source of the light was covered in bloodstains, and there was no one visible!
Cheng Ziyu’s heart instantly plunged into an ice cellar, a moment of panic; but having lived alone for many years, she possessed a strong will and quickly adjusted her emotions.
“Roar!” Suddenly, a rotten, torn, bloody face appeared at the peephole. The face did not look like a human’s makeup disguise, as the exposed bones were clearly visible.
Cheng Ziyu gasped in fright. She instinctively took a small step back and fell straight off the table.
Clearly feeling the pain, she rubbed her butt and said, “This isn’t a dream.”
“Bang!” The door was violently slammed.
Cheng Ziyu’s heart jolted in fear; she had probably made a noise when she fell off the table, attracting the zombie’s attention, so now she tried to make as little sound as possible.
Cheng Ziyu took off her slippers and quietly returned to her room barefoot. She looked out at the pitch-black window, where several figures were now gathered.
She didn’t need to think to know what had happened.
The woman who was screaming for help outside must have lost her life.
And shadows were vaguely approaching below the window. Seeing this, Cheng Ziyu quickly turned off the lights and waited quietly. After the shadows swayed for a while and then moved away, she tiptoed to the computer and turned it on to check.
Although there was no internet, Cheng Ziyu found a prominently displayed folder on the desktop. She opened it, and it was full of various news clippings.
━━ An City: Chewed up remains found by the river. This is the fourth victim in a series of murders.
━━ Jing City: Multiple incidents of animal attacks on humans.
━━ Hu City: Resurrected corpses found; however, this entry was marked as deleted.
Cheng Ziyu was in Su City, and the information in the folder also stated that yesterday someone suddenly had a rabies outbreak and bit multiple people in the supermarket.
“It seems the original owner discovered the problem early, so she stocked up on food beforehand,” Cheng Ziyu closed the computer, propped her chin with one hand, and pondered, “Did I transmigrate to the apocalypse? But…”
But why did she transmigrate inexplicably? And why was this world so similar to her original one?
Wait a minute…
Cheng Ziyu opened her phone and found that all her contacts were the same as in her original world. She clicked on the workshop director’s number, tapped to answer, but only heard a “beep-beep” busy signal.
“Can’t get through.” Cheng Ziyu tried calling other people, but it was still a “beep-beep” busy signal.
After hanging up, she sat on the bed, flustered and unsure what to do. She instinctively looked at the photo, but then she saw a stack of papers under the compass, and the calendar.
December 23rd. She had missed a day!
Cheng Ziyu moved the compass aside, picked up the paper, and her pupils immediately contracted. It was the manuscript for the novel “The Tycoon President’s Sweetheart (Apocalypse).”
“How can this be?” She quickly flipped through it, finding it exactly identical to the novel she had read. She picked up her phone to check her reading history, but this novel was nowhere to be found.
Her phone still had internet access. She clicked on online novels, only to find that it had been taken down and deleted.
Cheng Ziyu fell into anxiety, repeatedly examining the manuscript. The apocalypse began on December 23rd, and at the end of the manuscript, it said: “Keep going, live well.”
It must have been that old grandmother. What did she want?
Cheng Ziyu looked up at the calendar, feeling uneasy: “Could Grandma be the original author? Impossible, she’s so old, how could she still write books? And why did I transmigrate into the book? Just because of my negative review? Can’t I take it back?!”
That grandmother shouldn’t be the original author, since she encountered her before leaving the negative review; but then how to explain the manuscript tucked under the compass?
Cheng Ziyu was filled with questions.
If she had transmigrated into the book, it was highly likely that she would still be the cannon fodder female supporting character pushed into the mouths of zombies by the male lead. As for the remaining two uncertain factors, it was because she had too little specific information about the current situation.
“Calm down, calm down, I need to find a way.”
“If this is the world of the book, then I should have superpowers.” Cheng Ziyu put down the manuscript and waved her limbs like an idiot.
The original cannon fodder was a power-type ability user. So, Cheng Ziyu gripped the edge of the bed with both hands, and pulled hard—it didn’t budge: “Not power-type?”
“Gold, wood, water, fire, earth!” Seeing no reaction, Cheng Ziyu then pressed her hands against her forehead, “Mental power…”
Still nothing?
Cheng Ziyu then made a motion of spreading her wings and flying, dancing like a charlatan: “Wind…”
Alright!
Cheng Ziyu gave up and lay on the bed. She was just an ordinary person, as ordinary as could be. She might as well stay away from the male and female leads so she wouldn’t become cannon fodder.
“That’s not right, if this really is the world of the book, then this world will eventually be destroyed by the female lead! No matter how much I struggle to survive, I’ll still die anyway,” Cheng Ziyu exclaimed, sitting up in alarm.
This novel was originally supposed to have a happy ending (HE), but later the author changed it to a tragic ending (BE), and the female lead eventually destroyed the world, while the male lead took the survivors and escaped Earth.
Although the latter part was just rambling by the author, this world was indeed eventually destroyed by the female lead.
“Ah!” Cheng Ziyu scratched her head in frustration, “What exactly is going on, why is the manuscript here with me?”
“Roar!” Because she was too loud, nearby zombies heard her and responded with a roar!
Cheng Ziyu immediately covered her mouth in fright.
If it really was transmigrating into the book, zombies would be very strong later on. Hiding in one place would be suicide.
Currently, the male and female leads were both in Su City, and the male lead was in the high-end Mohe community, where security was good and zombies were relatively few.
Cheng Ziyu stood up, intending to change clothes and go find the male lead. It would be safer to find him now, while the apocalypse had just broken out and zombies were few and low-level.
“Wait, I can’t find the male lead. What if the female lead misunderstands, and then she’ll destroy the world again?” Cheng Ziyu muttered to herself in confusion as she opened her wardrobe.
Cheng Ziyu didn’t know what to do, and somewhat irritably threw her clothes onto the bed: “What do I do, what do I do?”
She glanced at the compass again, no… the north-pointing compass: “Wait, isn’t the female lead’s university in the north?!”
Did the old grandmother want her to find the female lead?
But… a university!
Even if the zombie apocalypse hadn’t fully broken out yet, the female lead’s university had already begun to experience outbreaks, so the university was extremely dangerous at this moment.
And if she forced her way into the university and met the female lead, how would she explain herself? How would she gain the female lead’s trust?
Don’t let the female lead’s gentle and kind demeanor fool you; very few people could get close to her heart, except for the male lead.
The original cannon fodder female supporting character also met the female lead after the male lead saved her. In the book, when the male lead saved the female supporting character, in her eyes, he was like a night elf in the darkness, handsome and a little mysterious.
That’s why the female supporting character fell for the male lead.
Cheng Ziyu tightened her grip on the compass, putting it in her pocket. She had to find the female lead, hoping to change the original cannon fodder’s fate, and also hoping to straighten out the female lead so she wouldn’t destroy the world.
The female lead actually didn’t have a good time at university. Because of her beauty, she was envied by others and naturally ostracized, and there were even rumors that she was being kept by someone.
As a result, after the apocalypse broke out, the female lead was exploited in various ways, being made to find food and kill zombies, almost always on the front lines.
Especially when it came to finding food, they would always make excuses to send the female lead alone.
In fact, the female lead had many opportunities to escape by herself, but because she had a good friend who was threatened, the kind female lead had no choice but to return each time.
It’s just that this friend of the female lead was a black lotus, always pretending to be innocent, but at crucial moments, she would sell out the female lead to gain personal benefits, and even compete for the male lead.
For example, the idea of having the female lead find food alone was actually from the black lotus. This led the female lead to go to the school’s convenience store to find food, almost losing her life to zombies.
Fortunately, at a critical moment, she awakened her spatial ability, strengthening her physique, and thus escaped.
“It really is a black and white match with my cannon fodder role!” But that black lotus at least lasted until the female lead destroyed the world.
She acted upon her thoughts.
Cheng Ziyu saw that it wasn’t daylight yet, so after changing her clothes, she went to the kitchen. She found many cardboard boxes and tape, cut the cardboard, wrapped it around her hands, and wound a lot of tape around them.
This way, if zombies lunged at her, she could hold them off for a while, preventing a direct bite.
“Tomorrow, I just need to wait near the convenience store for the female lead to appear. That way, I don’t have to enter the campus, and I can pretend to save the female lead—killing two birds with one stone.” Cheng Ziyu was quite satisfied with her plan; she just hoped she wouldn’t encounter too many zombies on the way to the convenience store.
She didn’t want to experience the pain of being bitten.
“Grrr.”
Cheng Ziyu clutched her stomach. The hunger made her stomach cramp, and it also diminished a bit of her fear: “I’ll eat my fill first, then go to the convenience store when it’s light.”
She opened a bag of bread and began to eat. Cheng Ziyu looked at the overwhelming array of food in the kitchen, feeling conflicted. Food was very important after the apocalypse, but she couldn’t carry so much.
“I’ll have to leave some food behind.”
Author’s Note:
The female lead being weak in the early stages is also one of the main plot points and foreshadowing.
She is a growth-type female lead
