It's Hard to Be the Female Lead's Best Friend (Apocalypse) GL - Chapter 4
“So… tired…” Cheng Ziyu’s legs trembled, each step feeling like a thousand pounds.
“Give it back to me…”
Cheng Ziyu looked up at the sound and saw a man snatch a woman’s backpack and run off. The woman was helpless, and when she saw Cheng Ziyu, the plea in her eyes was obvious.
The small shops and supermarkets on the street had already been looted. Even if there was food, there would definitely be a large number of zombies remaining in the supermarket.
As much as she could, Cheng Ziyu couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. The man had already run off anyway.
Cheng Ziyu stopped her bicycle and threw some food to the girl. She was barely able to take care of herself, so giving food was the most she could do. But as she rode again, she clearly felt the weakness in her legs.
She barely managed to keep going.
At the intersection ahead, there were over a dozen zombies. They were wearing school uniforms and looked quite young, clearly high school students from a nearby campus.
“No… too many zombies.”
Cheng Ziyu chose to take a detour.
But there were still zombies, just scattered randomly on the street or in houses. If she changed routes again, there might still be zombies, and the path would be too long.
“I’ll risk it.” Cheng Ziyu gripped the handlebars tightly, pushed hard on the pedal, her leg went weak, and she almost fell.
She gritted her teeth and pedaled the bicycle again.
From slow to accelerating…
She hunched her butt and pedaled desperately, quickly passing one zombie after another. When they reacted, they all chased after her.
Cheng Ziyu was drenched in sweat, breathing heavily. She looked back and saw several zombies relentlessly pursuing her. They opened their mouths wide, expressing their hunger.
Because of the mutation, the zombies’ skin was dark green or purplish-black, and it had also become increasingly tough.
A group of zombies with hungry eyes chased after her.
The image of being torn limb from limb was hard to shake from Cheng Ziyu’s mind. Her terrified heart, coupled with intense physical exertion, caused her heart rate to accelerate.
“Ah—” She gritted her teeth and accelerated again.
As time passed, she felt her chest was running out of oxygen, and her throat burned like fire.
“I… can’t… anymore, it’s… better… to die.” Cheng Ziyu gradually stopped. She simply didn’t have the strength to pedal anymore.
Slower and slower!
Like a tortoise crawling.
Cheng Ziyu’s feet finally touched the ground. She propped her hands on her waist, breathing heavily, and looked back. The few zombies had already been shaken off: “Thank… goodness…”
Cheng Ziyu looked around. Both sides of the street were quiet, secluded bushes. Ahead was a road sign, reading “Su Nan University,” which was where the female lead was about to appear.
Of course, that’s assuming she really did transmigrate into the book.
Su Nan University wasn’t the top university in the country, but it was the hardest to get into, and Su City had many wealthy people and beautiful women, so countless people wanted to get into this university.
Cheng Ziyu herself had wanted to get in.
She got off her bike and pushed it, walking. Her legs were sore, tingly, and numb; she could barely feel them as she walked.
The air here was fresh, and Cheng Ziyu enjoyed this moment of peace: “It’s really nice here. The university I went to before was a total waste.”
A warm, clear breeze gently blew, and the leaves rustled slightly, as if this place hadn’t changed because of the apocalypse.
“Finally, safe and sound.”
Ahead was a convenience store made of a steel shed, which was also where the female lead almost encountered danger. While there weren’t many zombies, she needed to find a safe place first.
The convenience store was two meters high, estimated to be less than fifty square meters, and was built alone on the edge of the street. Besides plants and trees, the only other thing on the street’s edge was a university in the distance.
Cheng Ziyu parked her bicycle on the edge and cautiously walked into the convenience store. She peeked inside and saw an elderly man leisurely spaced out.
The old man’s eyeballs were mostly obscured, and his face was purplish-blue, with no visible wounds.
“Hungry!”
The old man seemed excited by Cheng Ziyu’s arrival. He wanted to leave the convenience store but was blocked by the counter; however, he didn’t know how to open it, so he just roared at her!
Cheng Ziyu stepped back, walked around the convenience store, and then looked at the roof: “I can only hide on the roof for now. That way, it’ll be a bit safer.”
But there was only one tree close to the convenience store.
“How do I get up there?”
Cheng Ziyu had no choice but to activate her tree-climbing skills, but she only climbed one meter before falling down due to weak legs. “Bang!”
“Hiss!” Cheng Ziyu raised her hand and saw that her hand was scraped, bleeding slightly.
“Roar!” The old man zombie became excited because of this.
Cheng Ziyu stood up again, took a few steps back, and ran to climb the tree. Although the process was difficult, she finally made it onto the roof.
Cheng Ziyu lay on the roof, too tired to move: “Is it easy for me, a sports wimp?”
Cheng Ziyu sat up again, took a small sip of water, and observed her surroundings. She squinted her eyes towards the distant university gate, where a few figures were swaying.
There weren’t many of them, so it shouldn’t be difficult for the female lead to reach the convenience store. She just didn’t know when the female lead would arrive; the book didn’t specify a time.
But it was roughly the third day after the zombie outbreak, and it was currently the second day, meaning the female lead would probably arrive tomorrow.
Cheng Ziyu lay back down: “I’ll wait. I’ll conserve as much energy as possible.”
“Hungry!”
Cheng Ziyu originally wanted to close her eyes and sleep, but the old man zombie kept roaring, making it impossible for her to sleep. She crawled to the edge, looked down at him, and said, “Can’t you be quiet for a bit? Let me sleep first?”
The old man zombie heard her and looked up, scanning the air, seemingly searching for Cheng Ziyu.
Cheng Ziyu pulled out the watermelon knife from her waist, looked at the old man zombie, and thought that with one stab, she could put the old man zombie out of its misery.
Cheng Ziyu hesitated, finally withdrawing the knife and saying: “Forget it. The female lead hasn’t arrived yet, so it’s better not to do anything rash to avoid changing the plot.”
Actually, killing the old man zombie wouldn’t change the plot much; it was just her inner fear acting up. Saying something about changing the plot was just a form of self-comfort.
“Sigh! Transmigrating is one thing, but why did it have to be to the apocalypse? In the future, I won’t just have to face zombies, but all sorts of two-faced people too.” Cheng Ziyu sighed; but then, remembering her days being scolded at the factory, she couldn’t say the apocalypse was entirely bad.
“It’s a good thing this world overlaps with my original world, otherwise I’d be completely lost.”
“Old man zombie, I wonder if you have any family! Are you very worried about them? I’m fine, anyway, I have no family left, so I can die freely…” Cheng Ziyu prattled on to the old man zombie to ease her uneasy heart.
After all, being alone on a rooftop, it was impossible not to be scared; especially at night, with no living souls around, any girl would be afraid.
Cheng Ziyu was on edge, constantly observing her surroundings, terrified that a zombie with superhuman jumping ability might appear; although it was unlikely in the early stages of the apocalypse.
But she subconsciously focused her attention.
Until she prattled on until she was tired.
Her tense nerves gradually relaxed.
As she talked, Cheng Ziyu eventually fell asleep from exhaustion. In her dream, she still dreamed of the old man zombie constantly saying “hungry,” and there was a constant racket in her ears.
[Let’s play!]
[Sweetie!]
But when she opened her eyes, the sound disappeared again. Cheng Ziyu rubbed her ears, but found nothing: “Strange… I think I heard something just now.”
She felt like she had heard that sound somewhere before.
Unfortunately, she kept her eyes open and waited for a long time but didn’t hear the strange sound again.
Cheng Ziyu looked at the sky, feeling much more relaxed. She flexed her hands and moved her legs, having recovered about seventy percent of her stamina.
The dawning sky seemed to bring hope for life. Cheng Ziyu sat up and looked around, seeing zombies slowly moving back and forth.
They surrounded the convenience store, searching for food.
“Am I surrounded? No way? Is the female lead even coming? If she doesn’t, then I’ve just walked myself into a trap!” Cheng Ziyu was on the verge of tears, starting to doubt if she had really transmigrated into the book, in which case she had truly walked into her own death.
“Forget it, whether the female lead comes or not, I need to conserve my strength.” Cheng Ziyu ate a piece of chocolate and drank some water, then lay flat on the roof, trying to minimize her presence.
These zombies were currently still F-class ordinary zombies. They moved stiffly, felt no pain from knives or guns, and could only be killed by decapitation!
The zombie and ability user ranks were F, E, D, C, B, A, S, SS, SSS, and Special types, with each rank divided into low, mid, and high tiers.
“Sigh! If I can barely survive the early stages, am I just going to continue being a low-level laborer in a survivor base later on? Barely hanging on?” Cheng Ziyu sighed as she thought of the descriptions of zombies in the later stages.
“Roar!” Suddenly, the zombies roared excitedly and all rushed in one direction.
Cheng Ziyu looked up and saw a tall young woman, dressed in a women’s shirt, with long flowing hair, a beautiful face, and a gentle yet roguish smile.
The girl walked with elegant and calm steps.
But in her hand, she held a cleaver. The cleaver was like a part of her body, dancing in her hand, and combined with her clear, spring-like eyes, the cleaver in her hand was like an elegant paintbrush.
No longer vulgar or ugly.
The zombies ran excitedly, seemingly impatient with their own slowness, and lunged directly; but the smiling, gentle girl performed a spinning kick, sending a zombie’s head askew as it fell to the ground!
Damn, this is the female lead, Gu Qingli! So strong!
The other zombies quickly attacked Gu Qingli, opening their mouths wide, flanking her. She kicked one away and, with a backhand, swung her cleaver at another zombie’s head.
After the zombie fell, she quickly turned and chopped at the zombie she had kicked. Her movements were extremely agile. Fortunately, there weren’t many zombies, and Gu Qingli quickly cleared them out.
Cheng Ziyu knew the female lead exercised regularly, but she never knew the female lead was so skilled. No wonder she could go out of campus alone and still return alive.
But… the female lead was so strong, how could she save her and earn the title of “female lead’s best friend”?
Then.
Cheng Ziyu watched as Gu Qingli swiftly dealt with the old man zombie inside the convenience store with a cleaver, then opened her small backpack and began calmly collecting food.
Cheng Ziyu hesitated whether to call out and greet her now. Just as she was about to speak, she noticed another zombie by the tree near the convenience store, slowly moving towards Gu Qingli.
Cheng Ziyu’s eyes lit up. Her chance to “save the beauty” had arrived. She slowly drew the watermelon knife from her waist, intently watching the zombie, ready to strike.
Although she was very scared, she couldn’t miss this opportunity. She nervously gripped the watermelon knife, her eyes following the zombie’s movement.
Gu Qingli had just finished organizing her things when the zombie quickly lunged. Cheng Ziyu stepped on the edge of the roof, preparing to jump down and kill it.
At this moment, Cheng Ziyu stood on the rooftop like a beautiful little fairy. She ambitiously shouted: “Look out… I’m coming to… save… Ugh… Ah…”
“Thud!”
