It's Hard to Be the Female Lead's Best Friend (Apocalypse) GL - Chapter 8
At this moment, Gu Qingli gently took another girl’s hand, her voice soft and tender: “Don’t be afraid, you’ll follow behind me in a moment.”
Bathed in sunlight, Gu Qingli at this moment was like a beacon of dawn in the darkness, incredibly precious in such a perilous time. In the girl’s eyes, she was dazzling and utterly reliable.
“Mm!” The girl nodded, feeling a little reassured!
Fvck!
The female lead really was only nasty to her.
Seeing that gentle smile on Gu Qingli’s face, Cheng Ziyu couldn’t help but feel that the true Black Lotus should be Gu Qingli herself.
“Thump thump…”
Cheng Ziyu saw the two “snail girls” finally crawl to the middle. Suddenly, there was a loud banging sound from the rooftop entrance, scaring the girl next to Gu Qingli into a scream.
“Ah—”
Gu Qingli had no time to comfort her. The sound drove the zombies into a frenzy, and they began violently ramming the door. The girl screamed again, repeating this twice.
“Hungry…”
Cheng Ziyu shook her head. The sound would only attract more zombies. Being distracted by the girl, she actually felt less afraid, only wanting to cross the ropes quickly.
“Ah… what do we do…”
Qin Qingyan, beside them, couldn’t help but swing her hand and slap the girl: “Shut up! If you want to die, jump off the building yourself.”
The girl was so startled she fell to the ground, covering her face and looking pitifully at Qin Qingyan, who had suddenly turned into a shrew. She felt like this person had changed.
“Hungry—” But the zombies grew even more frenzied.
“You shut up too!” Cheng Ziyu rubbed her forehead.
Qin Qingyan snorted coldly.
“Wuwu… Help…” The two “snail girls” crossing the ropes suddenly screamed. They clung desperately to the ropes and cried.
It turned out that a strong gust of wind caused one of the girls to instinctively grip the ropes tightly, accidentally pulling them together. This caused them to lose their balance and hang suspended in the air, struggling. They clearly couldn’t hold onto the ropes any longer and were about to fall.
“Help!” The girl behind them cried out.
The strong winds at high altitude continued to blow.
The swaying ropes carried the people with them.
“Ah—” The girl clung desperately to the ropes, her only lifeline. If she let go, she would be shattered.
The girl at the front was about to lose her grip. She gritted her teeth fiercely, used all her arm strength, bent her abdomen, and stepped on the girl behind her to get onto the rope. That girl instantly fell like a wilting flower, plummeting downwards.
“Ah—” The girl’s scream was shrill, cutting off abruptly when she hit the ground.
“Thud—”
The heavy thud of the fall was like a warning bell echoing in everyone’s hearts. The apocalypse—it wasn’t just zombies one had to face; it was also the dark side of human nature.
Far on the other end, Shu Jingyun, who was almost at her destination, looked back. Seeing the girl quickly climbing, she couldn’t help but sneer inwardly.
Cheng Ziyu couldn’t resist glancing down. She could vaguely see the girl still twitching. The zombies downstairs smelled fresh bl00d and slowly walked towards her.
Cheng Ziyu turned her head, unable to watch anymore.
“Thump, thump…” The rooftop door was violently impacted, and faint cracks appeared in the wall beside it.
“Quick, you two go first, I’ll guard the rear.” Gu Qingli pulled the girl to the edge.
The girl’s newfound courage vanished the moment she saw the ground from the high building, and she started crying again: “No, I have acrophobia.”
Gu Qingli patted her back, her voice soft and comforting: “Don’t be scared, I’m behind you. Don’t look down. If we don’t go now, we’ll all become zombie food. You don’t want to experience being torn apart by zombies, do you?”
“Okay, I’ll go first.”
The girl wiped away her tears and finally mustered her courage. Though her hands and feet trembled, she looked straight ahead and pulled herself onto the ropes in one breath.
“Quick, let’s go together.” Qin Qingyan saw the cracks in the wall growing larger and immediately pulled Cheng Ziyu.
The gap in the door grew wider and wider.
Cheng Ziyu looked at the distant building, where a group of people were clustered, visible only as a large dot. She felt an inexplicable concern in her heart.
“It’s your turn, hurry up.”
Qin Qingyan climbed onto the rope. Gu Qingli, seeing Cheng Ziyu still not moving, couldn’t help but kick her butt.
“Oh? Oh!” Why kick me?
Cheng Ziyu pulled back her thoughts. She first laid prone on the edge, observing that Qin Qingyan was climbing steadily. Only then did she slowly extend her body.
Cheng Ziyu, who wasn’t originally afraid of heights, felt dizzy and nauseous looking down from this angle.
Things that looked easy were difficult to do. But she had no retreat. Even if she fell to her death, it was better than being bitten to death.
“Hurry up, what are you dawdling for? If you want to die, jump down now.” Gu Qingli grew impatient, raising her leg to push Cheng Ziyu.
“Ah… don’t kick me… I’m going to fall…” Cheng Ziyu was so scared that she clutched the ropes tightly, almost crying.
The female lead wouldn’t be trying to get rid of her early, would she?
“Then hurry up.”
Gu Qingli retracted her long leg, and Cheng Ziyu used both her hands and feet simultaneously, detaching herself from the building.
“Thump…”
The zombies had broken through the door, but there were still some obstacles at the entrance. They crowded forward, jostling each other, which ironically caused them to get stuck in the doorway.
“Roar—”
Their eyes were filled with hunger, and mucus slowly drooled from their mouths. They roared continuously at the food so close by, until they finally managed to squeeze through the door, only to find no trace of food.
Gu Qingli looked back at the headless-chicken-like zombies. She whispered, “Don’t make a sound, let’s climb slowly.”
“Mm!”
Cheng Ziyu’s palms were now completely sweaty, as were her cheeks. The breeze at high altitude swept over her; not only did she not feel any coolness, but it was rather chilling.
Cheng Ziyu climbed slowly, the middle section being the most difficult. The wind made her sway. Because her body and nerves were tense, she forgot her physical fatigue.
At this moment, Shu Jingyun finally reached the destination, but she felt a slight confusion: why hadn’t her boyfriend come to meet her?
Feeling uneasy, she swiftly swung herself onto the steps, seeing her classmates gathered around someone. She entered the balcony and, upon approaching, was slightly startled.
Just then, another girl also arrived. As she stepped onto the stairs, she was pulled up by someone. The girl bent over, panting: “Thank you.”
The person didn’t reply. Instead, a series of gasps were heard. She looked up and froze in terror.
••••
Cheng Ziyu kept climbing, occasionally looking down. She was already above where that girl had fallen. It had been almost fifteen minutes! The zombies were still gnawing.
Gu Qingli saw her pause, looked down, and instantly understood. Her voice was chilling: “If you keep dawdling, believe it or not, you’ll be the next one.”
“I believe you! I believe you!” Cheng Ziyu then continued to climb. Facing the female lead’s less-than-friendly attitude, she felt the hope of becoming best friends was slim to none.
The path ahead was a dead end; hope was around the corner.
Come on, don’t give up.
As time passed, Cheng Ziyu’s hands and feet grew weak; but she still gritted her teeth and persevered. Fortunately, with no major incidents, everyone was almost at their destination.
The first to arrive was the most timid girl. No matter who it is, when pushed to the brink, even the most timid person will do something astonishing.
The girl finally managed to reach the steps. She saw a boy with his back to her and extended her hand, panting: “Classmate, can you pull me up?”
The girl saw the boy shaking his head from side to side. She had no choice but to retract her hand, step onto the stairs, and pat the boy’s back: “If you’re not helping, don’t block the way.”
Cheng Ziyu squinted, feeling that the boy’s reaction was a bit strange, but their view was obstructed, so they could only see the boy’s back leaning against the edge of the steps.
But there were obvious bloodstains on the boy’s collar. The boy slowly turned his head, revealing a face that was only half intact. He grabbed the girl.
“Ah—” The girl screamed.
This attracted all the nearby zombies, and among them were the dozens of girls who had just escaped!
Cheng Ziyu gasped.
It was truly out of the frying pan and into the fire.
The girl desperately tried to shake him off, but the zombie’s strength was much greater than an ordinary person’s. For a moment, she couldn’t break free.
The girl desperately backed away.
But she was pulled forward with great force by the zombie. She braced herself against the steps. Seeing her body become unstable, she stomped on the steps and pulled back hard, causing her to lose her footing on the other side. Both the zombie and she fell onto the ropes, but the girl failed to grab on and plummeted directly, landing with twisted limbs.
“Thud!”
Only the zombie held fast to the rope.
Cheng Ziyu felt the rope sway violently, almost losing her balance. Fortunately, she wasn’t in the exact center, so she could barely maintain her balance.
What to do?
Cheng Ziyu wanted to ask, but she was afraid the zombies would hear her.
The zombie twisted its head and moved forward, and directly in front of it was Qin Qingyan. She gritted her teeth, not daring to make a sound.
Cheng Ziyu admired her a little at this moment. If it were her, she might not be able to remain as calm.
The zombie’s half-face revealed some bone, with some sagging flesh still clinging to it. It opened its mouth, gripping the rope tightly, and swayed its body from side to side, exploring.
The rope swayed continuously.
The zombie began to move forward step by step again. Qin Qingyan would be discovered by the zombie sooner or later, especially when the zombie suddenly “roared,” seemingly having detected a living person.
Qin Qingyan’s face turned pale with fright. The zombie quickly crawled, its rough movements causing it to almost fall occasionally, but its arms were too strong, keeping it tightly gripped to the rope.
Gu Qingli propped herself up, holding her breath: “If you don’t want to die, steady yourself.”
Cheng Ziyu didn’t understand. She subconsciously stiffened her body and tightened her grip on the ropes. Suddenly, her back was pressed down by a heavy force, causing her entire body to sink an inch, startling her to the core.
Gu Qingli actually snatched the watermelon knife from Cheng Ziyu’s waist, then stepped on her shoulder to get onto Qin Qingyan’s back.
Using Qin Qingyan’s back as support, she stabbed the zombie’s head with a knife. After the zombie fell, Gu Qingli then lay prone on the ropes and scrambled to the very front.
“So cool!” The two said in unison.
All of this happened in the blink of an eye. If Cheng Ziyu hadn’t personally experienced and witnessed it, she would have thought it was a movie.
But was Gu Qingli perhaps too strong?
Unless she had awakened her ability, according to the novel’s progression, she should indeed have awakened it by now.
But judging by Gu Qingli’s demeanor, she seemed to not want others to know, including Qin Qingyan.
