Episode 100: In Other Words, a New Vein Discovery
Seeing Tetsujin and Moguran standing protectively in front of me, the two men raised their hands. It seemed that Tetsujin and Moguran had been emitting a threatening aura. Brother Leonard hurriedly stepped in to diffuse the situation.
“Oh, Rufus, there’s a mineral vein continuing in that direction?”
“It seems like it. Should we try digging it out? Believe it or not, Moguran is really good at digging holes.”
“Yeah, I can tell just by looking. If it turned out that Moguran was bad at digging, I’d have to question your judgment, Rufus.”
That’s a bit rude, Brother Leonard. I take pride in appearances, you know. I wouldn’t summon something that doesn’t match its looks.
While thinking that, I waited for Duke Flute and the official’s response. It wouldn’t be right to dig in the tunnel without permission—this is Duke Flute’s territory, after all.
“I would like to ask you to dig, but I’m worried about the tunnel collapsing.”
“I think it’ll be fine. Moguran, can you dig without causing the tunnel to collapse?”
“Of course, I can. I can reinforce the walls while digging.”
Nice. It seems Moguran is quite versatile. Now that I think about it, it did create an incredibly sturdy wall before. If it uses that magic, it should be able to make a strong, stable tunnel.
“In that case, Prince Rufus, would you be so kind as to proceed?”
“Leave it to me. Moguran, follow Tetsujin’s instructions and start digging.”
“You got it. My claws are raring to go.”
Wait, what? Shouldn’t it be “my arms are raring to go”? As I was wondering about that, Moguran’s claws indeed started making a clacking noise.
Tetsujin shot a red laser-like beam from its eyes. It was marking specific spots. Moguran then began digging at those spots with a grunt.
The earthen wall crumbled away as if it were made of jelly. It left only some scattered stones at its feet.
Normally, digging a hole would produce a lot of excess dirt. But only stones were coming out. Wondering why, I watched Moguran closely. I realized that it was compacting the excess dirt into the walls, making them as solid as concrete. With this method, there was no risk of the tunnel collapsing.
An official picked up one of the stones on the ground. Noticing something, he held up a lamp, took out a magnifying glass, and began examining it. It seemed the stone wasn’t just an ordinary rock.
“This is definitely iron ore! And with quite a high purity, too!”
“Oh! That’s fantastic news! And the vein continues further in this direction, right?”
Duke Flute looked at me with eyes full of hope. He was unable to hide his excitement over the discovery of a new mineral vein. He looked so thrilled that he seemed on the verge of rubbing his hands together.
“I believe so. Right, Tetsujin?”
“Ma!”
Tetsujin’s cheerful “Ma” rang out. Hearing it, Duke Flute and the official both broke into joyous smiles.
Amidst the celebration, Tetsujin looked at me with an expectant gaze. Ah, I see what this is about.
“Um, would it be okay if I took some of the ore?”
“Certainly, but what do you plan to do with it?”
“Well, I was thinking of giving it to Tetsujin to eat…”
Duke Flute and the official exchanged glances before breaking into broad smiles.
“Of course! We could never thank Tetsujin enough. And the same goes for you, Prince Rufus.”
“Exactly as His Grace says! Discovering a new vein at such a shallow level—this is an incredible find!”
“Is it really that big of a deal?”
I didn’t quite get it. As I handed the iron ore to Tetsujin, I noticed that Brother Leonard also looked puzzled. He was tilting his head in confusion.
Tetsujin took the iron ore from me and began munching on it with a crunching sound. It was like someone eating ice. It was quite a sight, but its eyes sparkled with delight.
“We thought all the shallow veins were already exhausted. The discovery of this new one proves that there are still unknown veins hidden within this mine. Just realizing that is a huge relief.”
The official spoke with a beaming face. His expression was full of determination as if to say, “This mine isn’t finished yet.” It seemed Duke Flute felt the same way.
After receiving some iron ore, the mine tour came to an end. The hole Moguran dug wasn’t very long. But it seemed that there were still more mineral veins lying dormant beyond it.
It appeared that Tetsujin was equipped with some kind of sensor for detecting mineral veins. This was the first time I learned about this ability. With this skill, we might be able to discover new veins in other locations as well.
Apparently, I wasn’t the only one who realized this. As soon as we returned to the inn after the tour, Brother Leonard and Duke Flute immediately began discussing “further mineral veins…”
Of course, I was left out of the conversation. But that’s fine—I’m still a child. Besides, to be honest, I’d rather avoid getting involved in political matters. They seem like such a hassle.
And so, right now, I’m having a tea party with Flare-chan. Aside from us, there were also other children of nobles from Liberia and the surrounding areas gathered here.
“Prince Rufus, did something happen during the mine tour? My father looked extremely happy.”
“There was a little discovery. But you should ask Duke Flute for the details. It might not be appropriate for me to talk about it.”
With that, I skillfully dodged the question. If I said too much and it became a problem, that would be bad. Duke Flute probably has his own strategies in mind. If word spreads from the children to their parents, it could turn into some troublesome dispute over rights or privileges.
