Episode 103: In Other Words, I Can Pet the Beard
The Summoning Skill, a cheat skill bestowed upon me by the gods. Probably.
Well, I’ve already encountered two people who can use this cheat skill. But it feels like there’s a difference between me and them in some way.
Well, no need to sweat the small stuff.
A magic creature that can do blacksmithing. It would have been great if Tetsujin could take that role, but it’s still just a “chef”. So, what should I do?
When you think of crafting, you think of Dwarves. And when you think of Dwarves, you think of a master blacksmith. How about calling the master *Maester*, derived from the word “meister”? Yeah, that feels good.
“In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, Maester!”
Particles of light burst from my body and began to form in front of me. The height was about the same as mine. But the width seemed to be more than twice as large.
Balt and Ray were already used to this sight. They showed no reaction. But the staff members, seeing this bizarre scene for the first time, stepped back a little.
“Master, did you call for me?”
“Oh, this is exactly the Dwarf I imagined!”
A squat, sturdy body with arms like logs, and a splendid white beard. On his waist were several hammers hanging. He looked like he could really craft something!
“Dwarf! Yes, this is the image of the dwarves in the stories!”
It seemed that even Flare-chan understood right away. Not just Flare-chan, but Balt, Ray, and the others all seemed satisfied. I could see nods and hear murmurs of agreement.
“I want Maester to forge a sword. Miss Flare seems to want a spare sword.”
“Ah, um, I didn’t ask for it, you know?”
“I know, I know. This is just my selfish wish. I want to give Miss Flare a sword as a present.”
Of course, it’s not just about gifting a sword. Since I summoned him, I want to check Maester’s abilities!
Huh? Flare-chan’s face is all red… this room is quite hot, so it can’t be helped.
“In that case, leave it to me. I’ll make you the best sword. Hey, you! Can I borrow this spot for a bit?”
“Huh? Ah, yes, of course.”
The confused craftsman moved aside. Sorry for getting in the way. I should probably bring some refreshments for the artisans later.
Maester, who had firmly seated himself, took an iron ingot in hand. He was muttering while inspecting it.
“Quality’s good enough. Young lady, what shape do you want your sword to be?”
“Y-young lady? U-um…”
This was probably the first time Flare-chan had been called “young lady.” She seemed a little flustered and began consulting with Maester. She would ask him questions and listen to his opinions. They repeated this several times. I couldn’t hear much of what they were saying since their voices were soft. And even if I could, there was nothing I could do. Being powerless is tough.
Once the discussion seemed to be over, Flare-chan returned to our side. Maester placed the ingot in the forge and turned up the fire.
The fuel seemed to be coal, but the heat was much higher than expected… Ah, I see. He’s using Fire Magic. I’m glad we got to see it in action. Good job, Fire Magic!
In no time, the ingot’s color changed. And Maester began forging it with an astonishing speed. It was almost like he had eight hands. It was impressive. Everyone was watching in awe, and the sound of hammering echoed loudly.
After several rounds of heating and forging, it seemed he was entering the final stage. Using a whetstone, Maester began sharpening the sword blade quickly. About ten minutes had passed. As expected from a Dwarf—his speed was on another level.
“Hmm, this should do. If I had magic ore or divine ore, I could make something even better.”
Maester was holding the sword he just forged. He checked it over as he spoke. Magic ore and divine ore? Those were rare ores, I believe. Especially divine ore, which was an ultra-rare mineral. Even Brother Leonard didn’t have a sword made from divine ore.
“As expected from Maester. You can work with any metal.”
“Of course. If a Dwarf can’t do something like that, it’d be a disgrace to our name.”
“I see. By the way, can I touch your beard?”
“Oh, sure. If you want to, go ahead.”
So, without holding back, I touched the smooth and impressive beard that didn’t quite match his appearance. As expected, no, even more than I expected, it was incredibly smooth.
Maester was looking confused. Now that I think about it, he had been holding the sword the whole time. I need to hand it to Flare-chan.
“Um, it looks like Miss Flare’s sword is finished.”
“Here you go. The sharpness is guaranteed, but the durability is about the same as any other sword. Don’t get too cocky.”
Maester handed the sword to Flare-chan. She received it wordlessly, but I didn’t miss the look of joy in her eyes. The sword was trembling slightly in her hands.
Maester said that, but I’m sure the durability is better than that of a regular sword. Still, he must have warned her out of concern. He’s kind.
“A-ah, thank you. I can’t believe I’m receiving such a beautiful sword.”
The sword was a little shorter than usual. It seemed to be the perfect length for Flare-chan’s current height. She’d be able to use it for the next few years. While Flare-chan was checking the sword, Maester quickly made a sheath for it.
