Episode 104: In Other Words, There’s No Deep Meaning
I just realized something—wouldn’t it be bad to pull out a sword in front of the Duke’s daughter? No, wait, if that’s the case, it’s probably not good to draw a sword in front of me either, since I’m royalty.
Well, never mind. No formalities, no formalities. Balt and Ray are smiling with strained expressions. But it’s all informal. I can’t make Flare-chan a criminal.
Maester handed the completed sheath to Flare-chan. Once she properly sheathed the sword, she carefully cradled it in both hands as if it were precious.
“Thank you so much, Rufus-sama. I’ll treasure it.”
“I’d be happy if you did, but don’t treat it *too* carefully, okay? A sword is only valuable when it’s used. Maester would agree with me, right?”
“Of course. Anyone who just wants a sword to display is welcome to make one themselves. I’m not like that.”
Maester snorted through his nose. Seems like he agrees with me. That’s no surprise; Maester was created as a magical creature according to my intentions.
Once Flare-chan put the sword at her waist, we resumed our inspection of Liberia’s streets. Of course, Maester was with us. He seemed really interested in the forging techniques of the current age.
However, it seems there wasn’t much that caught his attention.
“Still lacking. At this rate, we’ll never be able to make a holy sword.”
“A holy sword?” “A holy sword!”
Could he actually make a holy sword? Flare-chan sounded so happy, and she gave off the same vibe as Brother Leonard. I’ll keep quiet about how I own a large number of holy swords.
“Well, I don’t think we’ll end up making a holy sword. After all, there aren’t any monsters that can only be defeated by one.”
“If that’s the case, then I guess we don’t need one.”
Maester laughed heartily. Looks like he understood what I meant. So there was no further discussion on the matter.
Having a magical creature capable of making a holy sword could definitely lead to a lot of troublesome situations.
Because Maester didn’t explicitly say, “I can make a holy sword” here, the truth of that matter remains a mystery. If anyone asks, I’ll just play dumb. This should keep things from becoming a bigger issue.
After finishing the inspection, we returned to the inn. Brother Leonard and Duke Flute were already there. Both of their faces were bright. It’s safe to say they must have come to some agreement.
“We’re back.”
“Welcome back, Rufus. Is that dwarf-like creature…….”
“This is a magical creature I summoned. It’s Maester, a Dwarf.”
“Maester…….. and what can Maester do?”
“Maester is skilled in forging.”
Brother Leonard immediately took an interest in Maester. Duke Flute also seemed intrigued, but there was something else on his mind.
“Flare, what’s up with that sword? I’m pretty sure you didn’t have it when you left.”
“This sword is a gift from Rufus-sama.”
Flare-chan smiled brightly and cradled the sword in her arms. Seeing this, Brother Leonard seemed to have caught on to most of what was going on.
“Did Maester make that for you?”
“Yes. Maester made it for me. I tried forging myself, but it didn’t go well. So I asked Maester to make it instead.”
“I see… So, you really wanted to give Miss Flare a sword that badly.”
Oh no, this is bad. Brother Leonard might think I have special feelings for Flare-chan. But that’s not the case! Flare-chan is just a potential fiancée and a friend.
Without the King, my mother, or even Brother Leonard’s input, I can’t just choose someone on my own.
“Well, I heard that Miss Flare didn’t have a spare sword. Since I got to visit the workshop, I thought I could do something in return. Of course, I also wanted to see Maester’s abilities.”
There’s no deep meaning behind it, so please don’t think too much about it!
I made sure to look Brother Leonard in the eye. I was hoping he’d understand. I’m not sure if it got across, but it seems like he accepted it.
Phew. I haven’t messed up yet. I’m still at two outs.
“I see. Flare-chan, may I see the sword?”
“Of course.”
Brother Leonard received the sword that Flare-chan had offered. As expected, when Brother Leonard held it, it looked smaller. It was about the size of a side sword you’d see in a samurai drama. It’s wider than a katana and has blades on both sides, though.
Brother Leonard smoothly drew the sword. I’d noticed before, but the blade is really beautiful.
By the way, the handle is integrated with the sword. Because of that, it looks more durable than it appears. And, of course, the grip is tightly bound with cord to prevent slipping.
Brother Leonard silently stared at the sword. His face clearly showed that he wanted it.
But that’s not allowed, okay? That’s Flare-chan’s sword. If you forcibly take a sword from a child, that would be a matter of royal dignity, you know?
It seems my gaze, thick and sticky like natto, communicated my feelings clearly. Brother Leonard reluctantly sheathed the sword and returned it to Flare-chan. Flare-chan let out a small sigh, as if relieved.
It seems I wasn’t the only one who thought he might take it.
