Episode 106: In Other Words, a Three-Day Monk
Flare-chan was staring intently at the sword that came out of Tora-chan. Duke Flute also seemed curious, as he kept glancing at me and Brother Leonard. It was as if he wanted an explanation.
However, I had to refuse. If I were to mention that a holy sword had appeared, things could get troublesome. I thought this, but Brother Leonard was actually pleased by the attention. So, he went ahead!
“Are you curious? This is a secret, but this sword is a holy sword. The holy sword Excalibur.”
“The holy sword Excalibur! The one from fairy tales! I can’t believe it really exists! Amazing! Rufus-sama!”
No, it’s not like I’m the amazing one here. Tora-chan, or rather, Tora-chan’s summoner from long ago, is the impressive one.
Wait, is that really impressive? I don’t even fully understand why my ancestors tried to collect holy swords in the first place. I wish there had been a journal left at the castle from them.
Hmm, a journal? Could it be that the journal is inside Tora-chan? I should ask about that later.
Flare-chan was excited. And Duke Flute looked both shocked and confused. They still couldn’t shake off the shock, even after dinner. Apparently, the impact was that strong.
After dinner and a bath, I summoned Maester and introduced him to everyone. Of course, in the size of a doll.
“Such a splendid beard! May I touch it?”
“I’d like to touch it too.”
“Of course, of course. Never thought at my age I’d be popular with young ones.”
Maester proudly let Tia and Aqua enjoy the feel of his beard.
But… “at my age”—could it be that the summoned magical creatures have an “age” status that I’m unaware of?
I’m curious, but is it okay to ask? Hmmm.
Well, that aside, I asked Tora-chan about something I’d been wondering about earlier.
“Hey, Tora-chan, do you happen to have a journal from the previous master inside you?”
“Uh, yeah, I do.”
Saying that, Tora-chan pulled out a surprisingly new-looking journal.
………..New-looking? I had a bad feeling about it. Still, I thought it might give me some kind of clue. So I decided to check it.
‘Day 1: I’ve decided to start a journal today. This journal will definitely help my descendants. To the descendant who picks up this journal: Please take good care of Tora-chan.’
…This naming sense. There’s no doubt I’m a descendant of the person who wrote this. I can’t believe they gave Tora-chan the same name. No wonder Tora-chan immediately recognized me as its master.
The next page described what the writer ate that day.
Hmm? This is getting suspicious. More importantly, why didn’t they write about putting holy swords and other ancient relics inside Tora-chan?!
*Flip.* The next page had more details about the meals and names of people met during the journey. And then……. blank pages!
“Of course.”
“What’s wrong?”
I flipped through more pages, but they were all blank. All the way to the end. Ah, just as I expected. I fought the urge to slam the journal onto the floor.
I’m a prince, I’m a prince. I can’t lose my composure over something like this.
“No, it’s just that it was exactly as I thought. I just thought it would be nice if it surprised me a little bit.”
“Seems like being a master is tough for you, huh?”
“Thanks for looking out for me, Lagios.”
Now, should I just ask Tora-chan directly? But, in a way, Tora-chan was kind of abandoned by its previous master. Asking might be a bit cruel, don’t you think? That thought crossed my mind, so I couldn’t bring myself to ask.
Well, it’s fine. If it was something important, Tora-chan would’ve told me a long time ago. The fact that it hasn’t means it’s not that important.
In other words, there’s no deep meaning to it.
Still, to think the journal ended after three days. This is truly a “three-day monk” situation, huh? At least I won’t end up like that. I can stick with it for about three months.
“So, what was written in it?”
“Ah, well, it said to take care of Tora-chan.”
“Really?!”
“Really.”
I showed Tora-chan the first day of the journal. Not only Tora-chan, but the others seemed interested too and gathered around.
It seems that Tora-chan really liked its previous master. Its master might have been reluctantly forced to leave Tora-chan behind. It was perhaps to pass on the contents to his descendants.
If that’s the case, then my ancestors likely saw the rise of surviving Demons as a danger to the world once again. After all, Lagios did end up defeating a surviving Demon. So it wasn’t entirely wrong.
“Master, why don’t you start keeping a journal as well?”
“That sounds great! Let’s preserve Darling’s heroic tales for future generations!”
“Pii-chan!”
“Even you, Pii-chan? Are you serious? If future descendants read about my exploits, they might think it’s all just made-up stories, you know?”
Of course, it’s a joke. I haven’t done anything “impossible” to that extent yet.
A journal, huh? It might be nice to keep a record of the days spent with everyone. Then, descendants who inherit the Summoning Skill might summon us all back to this world again.
“Yeah, future generations might think it’s made-up. Then Darling’s great achievements would be seen as lies!”
“That would certainly be a problem. It would be very unfair to have Master treated as a liar.”
“Pii-chan!”
…………….You guys should be denying this, first. I haven’t done anything to that level, right? Right?
