Episode 107: In Other Words, it’s an Unsettled Feeling
Feeling extremely complicated, I gave up on writing the journal. It might be worse than being a three-day monk. But I would rather avoid leaving my blunders behind for future generations.
…I wonder, though? Even if I don’t write it, it feels like my mistakes might still end up as some kind of written record, like a report.
“Hmm.”
“What’s wrong?”
“Do I really cause that many problems?”
“Absolutely not. There’s no such thing. You still have to work much harder for the future, Master.”
“Lagios, what are you planning to have me do?”
I asked, but got no answer. The summoned magical creatures seem to have some kind of connection to the Creator God. So maybe they’re listening to something or have a premonition of sorts.
Seeing no response, it seems Lagios doesn’t fully understand it either. Neither do the others. In that case, I suppose things will turn out as they will. I’ll give up. I am like a leaf on a tree, swept away by the currents of a great river.
That night, I decided to sleep with everyone. The next day, when the servant came to wake me up, they told me they were warmed by the sight of me surrounded by stuffed animals. I thought my face was going to catch fire when I heard this from Brother Leonard.
“Ugh, this is ridiculous. Should I have gone to bed after sending everyone back? But then again…”
“It’s fine. It’s more fun to sleep together with everyone.”
“Chun.”
“Well, that’s true, but it’s kind of embarrassing if someone sees that sight.”
It seems that Tia and Ochun prefer to sleep together. Thinking about this, when I looked around, everyone had similar expressions.
In other words, they all want to sleep together too.
This is impossible to refuse. It looks like we’ll have to sleep together every night. It would be too sad if one person was left out.
After finishing the morning briefing, I took a break and then sent everyone back except for Tetsujin. Today, I’m starting the work I was asked to do. Which is, of course, searching for new mines.
“I hope we find a new vein of ore.”
“Ma.”
“Oh, you seem confident, Tetsujin. Did you find something else yesterday?”
“Ma.”
I see. It seems like there was a reaction elsewhere as well. With this, I might not disappoint Duke Flute. Though I’m a little concerned about Tetsujin making eating gestures.
As I was about to head to the mine, Flare-chan approached.
“I wanted to go with you, but…”
“It can’t be helped. The further into the mine you go, the more dangerous it gets.”
“In that case, what about you, Rufus-sama?”
“I’m fine. If things get bad, I’ll have Lagios destroy the mine.”
Flare-chan’s face stiffened. Oh no, did I say something wrong? I was just trying to reassure her.
Seeing that, Flare-chan said, “Then I’ll be fine,” and sent me off to the mine. It felt unsettled. But I thought, well, it’s okay. I’ll just do the job I’ve been given properly, even if it feels unsettling.
Upon arriving at the mine, I was warmly welcomed by the officials who had guided me the day before. Today, there were other miners present. So it was a rather crowded and dirty place.
Perhaps the reason Flare-chan wasn’t allowed to come with me was because of this.
“Third Prince, we truly thank you for coming all the way here.”
“No need for formalities. This is part of my work as royalty.”
I said that, and the officials and miners looked at me with somewhat touched expressions. It’s understandable; summoning a royal must feel like an overwhelming thing to do. But I don’t mind. Because in my past life, I was a commoner.
“Let’s get started. Please guide me inside.”
“Understood. Please be careful with your steps.”
Though the area is lit by lamps, it’s still much darker than in the sunlight. While I won’t trip, it’s definitely safer to have brighter lighting. What should I do about that?
“In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, Lightmoth!”
In response to my call, the Lightmoth Marimo appeared above Tetsujin’s head. Marimo immediately began emitting light. And the dark corridor became as bright as daytime. With this, it seems there’s no problem.
The corridor, which is now much more visible than before, is littered with large stones that could cause someone to trip. I’m glad I brightened it up.
“Wow, I can’t believe how much brighter the corridor has become! Even with the Light spell, it doesn’t get this bright!”
The officials are delighted. Even so, it’s likely that using the Light spell would make the corridor brighter than simply using lamps to light it. The reason they don’t use it is probably because it continuously consumes mana.
It’s likely that they use magic when digging the tunnels. To conserve mana for that, they probably rely on lamps instead of using the Light spell.
There are utility spells like digging and self-enhancement magic, after all.
As I advanced through the now safer tunnel, Tetsujin reacted to something. Its eyes began to flash with light.
