Episode 110: In Other Words, It’s Something You Shouldn’t Touch
I asked Maester to create a greatsword that would suit Brother Leonard well. The material we’re using is iron ingots. I had thought we would use magic ore, since it was Brother Leonard’s request. But that wasn’t the case.
“We can’t mine magic ore around here.”
“I see. I had heard that, but it really is a rare ore, isn’t it?”
When I asked the craftsman about it, that was the answer I received. It seems that the mines near the town of Liberia don’t produce magic ore. If they did, many well-known craftsmen would have gathered here by now. It’s a bit disappointing.
I proceeded with making the greatsword to fit Brother Leonard’s height, while listening to opinions from Balt and Ray. Maester seemed to be mixing in some other minerals with the molten iron.
Could he be making steel? The blend ratio for that is complicated, so it must be hard work. I definitely couldn’t do it.
But Maester seems to be handling it easily. As expected of the magical creature I summoned. It does things I don’t even know about with ease.
Wait, does this mean I’m not useful except for summoning things? That can’t be true.
As I pondered this depressing realization, the work continued. The only thing I could do was stay out of the way in the corner.
Phew, somehow it feels calming.
“Master, it’s almost done. Why are you standing in the corner, though, if you want to see the finishing touches?”
“Ah, I was just trying not to get in the way of everyone.”
“In the way? Who said such a thing to you? I’ll crush them for you!”
“Ah, it’s fine, I wasn’t told anything!”
I hurriedly stopped Maester. He had pulled out an enormous hammer from nowhere. It seems that I have a place to belong as the emotional support for the magical creatures.
I’m glad. It looks like I have a home too.
After calming down Maester, I finally faced the completed greatsword. It looked different from the usual iron swords I was used to. It seemed a bit….… black?
“Hey, Maester, the color looks kind of dark. Is it just my imagination?”
“Oh, you’re sharp, as expected! That’s because I used a pseudo-magic ore.”
“Pseudo-magic ore?”
“That’s right. If we don’t have magic ore, we can add some stuff to iron to make something similar. Of course, it can’t compare to real magic ore. But it’s not inferior to regular iron, you know?”
Wait, Maester, what kind of thing are you making?! The people nearby are staring with wide eyes and mouths open. Oh no, what should I do?
Among them, Flare-chan was looking at her sword. Her sword was a normal iron sword, so that expression makes sense. What should I do? Should I have it remade? Wait, I know!
“Miss Flare, that shining sword suits you very well. But look, this one looks kind of dark, right? It has the feel of a sword a dark lord would wield.”
“Now that you mention it, that could be true. Magic ore swords seem to be excellent, but they do have a slightly eerie appearance.”
Alright, I managed to get through this. If we go with this explanation, Brother Leonard might look like a dark lord. But considering that Brother Leonard has the Sword Saint Skill, from the perspective of the enemies he fights, he could certainly be seen as a demon king.
Whether he’s good or evil is a different matter.
“I can’t believe you can create magic ore…”
The craftsman groaned. I should probably warn him about this. It would be troublesome if people misunderstand and think they can easily make pseudo-magic ore. If that happens, the price of magic ore will plummet. And we’ll be hated from all directions.
“Probably only Maester can do it. The blend ratio is complex, and it’s probably different every time depending on the quality of the iron. Unless a way to precisely measure the components of iron is established, I don’t think it can be done.”
“That’s right. You’re spot on. You’re a man I can count on!”
Maester nodded. He was pleased with my response. He clasped his hands together.
I just said that casually, but it seems like it was accurate. Or maybe Maester was just humoring me? Either way, great!
Hearing this, the craftsman’s shoulders slumped in disappointment. They had witnessed the process of making pseudo-magic ore right in front of them. But they couldn’t make it themselves. It must feel like heaven and earth to them.
Personally, I believe in the saying, “Let sleeping dogs lie.” This is definitely a technology that shouldn’t be touched.
Other than being made from pseudo-magic ore, the greatsword’s appearance has no issues. As for its sharpness, I trust Maester. So it should be fine. It looks like it could cut really well. Since it’s here, maybe I should try lifting it?
“Ugh, this is heavy!”
“Rufus-sama, that’s dangerous! What would you do if you got hurt?”
Ray immediately stopped me. As expected of Ray—he’s extremely overprotective when it comes to me. Just from lifting it a bit, it felt about three times heavier than the sword I usually use for training. There’s no way I could swing this around. It even looks bigger than my height.
“There’s no problem with this. Brother Leonard will definitely be pleased.”
“I’m sure he’ll be happy, but it also seems like it could cause some problems.”
Balt gave a wry smile. I knew it—Balt thinks so too? What a coincidence. I was just thinking the same thing. I wonder if there’s a way to hide the fact that it was made from pseudo-magic ore.
Maybe I could say it accidentally got scorched or something? But that would damage Maester’s reputation. Ugh, what should I do?
