Episode 111: In Other Words, Greatswords Are a Man’s Romance
Afterward, due to the enthusiastic requests from the craftsmen, Maester ended up giving an impromptu blacksmithing lecture.
Since I didn’t really understand what was being explained, I enjoyed tea at a nearby table with Flare-chan.
“Thanks to you for coming to the Flute Duchy, Rufus-sama. It feels like the whole territory has become more lively.”
“Well, that’s probably true. I am royalty, after all. Just staying here is enough to cause a stir.”
“Um, that’s part of it. But it’s not just that. I feel like the excitement will continue even after you return to the castle.”
As expected of the Flute Duke’s daughter—she seems to have sensed that my actions have stirred things up in the territory.
The discovery of new ore veins and Maester’s technical guidance…
Since I summoned Maester with the image of a dwarf master possessing the finest skills, his craftsmanship must be extraordinary. Being able to learn those skills directly, even for a short time, could potentially allow the craftsmen here to level up significantly.
Ah, I’m starting to get a bad feeling about this. Should I stop Maester?
But seeing him happily teaching the craftsmen, I decided against it. There’s no way I could bring myself to stop him when he looks so delighted.
Well, it’s only for a short while. I’m sure it’ll be fine…
After finishing up at the workshop, we toured the town of Liberia before heading back. We were scheduled to enter the mine again tomorrow. So, it might be best to rest up a bit.
When we returned to the inn, Brother Leonard was already there.
Huh? Is today’s mountain investigation already over? It feels a bit early.
“Welcome back, Rufus. How did it go?”
“Well, we managed to find a few ore veins. I think they’re currently assessing the scale of those veins.”
“Anything else?”
Brother Leonard was smiling. Anything else? Oh, he’s talking about the sword! Did he come back this early just because of that?
I have to say, I’m impressed, but…….. is that really okay, Brother Leonard? I feel like he’s doing something pretty out of line too, just on a smaller scale. I should definitely make a note of this in my report.
“We made the sword you requested at the workshop, Brother Leonard. Balt, it’s still in the storage room on the first floor, right?”
“Yes, it’s stored on the first floor. Shall I go get it?”
“Please do.”
Balt moved swiftly. Brother Leonard’s face lit up with a grin. He looks so happy. At this rate, he might not even get mad about it being made from pseudo-magic ore. Lucky me!
From our conversation, it seemed Brother Leonard had completely delegated the nearby mountain survey to Duke Flute and his people.
He didn’t outright say it, but it was pretty obvious. After all, he didn’t mention any detailed plans. He just kept saying things like, “We’re scheduled to go here” or “We’re scheduled to go there,” without any specifics.
While we were talking, Balt brought the greatsword and placed it on the table. It was so big that it hung off the edge of the table. And Brother Leonard’s eyes sparkled even more. It seemed to be to his liking.
“A greatsword! This is awesome. I’ve always wanted one, but they kept telling me it’s not suitable for royalty…”
“Greatswords are a man’s romance, after all!”
We were getting fired up, while Balt and Ray remained silent. It seemed it was indeed true that greatswords weren’t considered suitable for royalty.
Well, I guess that makes sense. Royals are expected to carry themselves gracefully. Swinging around a massive sword like a barbarian would definitely make them look savage.
Brother Leonard was eagerly moving his hands. He was clearly itching to draw the sword. The greatsword was sheathed in a scabbard made by Maester. So you couldn’t see the blade unless you drew it. And it looked like Brother Leonard was planning to do just that right here and now.
There was a reason it had been left in the first-floor storage room: the assumption that “he would draw the sword outside.” And now that assumption was about to be proven wrong.
Brother Leonard would unsheath the sword anywhere—even in the middle of an inn room.
“Um, Leonard-sama…”
Balt, the voice of reason, tried to stop him. Meanwhile, Ray seemed to have already given up on the idea of stopping him. As he subtly moved me back.
I don’t think Brother Leonard would go so far as to swing it around……… I want to believe that, at least.
“Don’t worry, Balt. I’m just going to check the blade for a bit. Just a little.”
Brother Leonard, that excuse only makes it more concerning. He could easily go down to the first floor. So why is he so adamant about doing it here? Well, this room is spacious enough, so drawing the sword shouldn’t be an issue, I suppose.
With careful movements, Brother Leonard began unsheathing the sword. Just from the feel of the grip, he must already realize it’s an incredible weapon. As expected of a sword enthusiast—he can sense its quality just by looking at it.
With a smooth, whispering sound, the blade slid out of its sheath. A slightly darkened blade was revealed. Despite its blackish hue, it faintly reflected our figures.
“This is…”
Brother Leonard froze, staring at the blade. I had expected him to get all excited. But that didn’t happen. What a shame—I was looking forward to seeing his childlike glee.
