Episode 112: In Other Words, It’s Safe
Brother Leonard had been staring at the blade of the greatsword. He began to move. He looked at me with a face that seemed eager to test its cutting edge!
“That’s not allowed, Brother Leonard.”
“Of course, I understand. More importantly, what is this sword made of? It looks like magic ore, but also doesn’t seem quite like it.”
As expected from sword enthusiast Brother Leonard. It appears he quickly realized that this sword wasn’t made from ordinary metal.
It seemed better to explain this. If I tried to cover it up, Brother Gilliam might get involved. It then would lead to an investigation.
“That sword is made using pseudo-magic ore.”
“Pseudo-magic ore? I’ve never heard of that metal before.”
“Maester mixed various things into iron to create something resembling magic ore.”
“Something resembling magic ore!”
Brother Leonard exclaimed, but he didn’t seem to fully understand what it was. To be fair, I didn’t fully understand it either. So, I decided to share the story I heard from Maester with Brother Leonard.
He immediately realized the greatness of this greatsword.
“It may not be as good as magic ore, but it’s better than iron. If weapons could be made using this pseudo-magic ore, knights would be able to fight with more peace of mind.”
“That’s definitely not possible, okay? The price of magic ore would plummet.”
“That’s true… What a shame. But even though it’s called pseudo-magic ore, it seems sharper than the magic ore sword I own.”
So, he did have one after all. As expected of a sword enthusiast. At this rate, he might even have a sword made from divine ore. In that case, there was no need to use pseudo-magic ore; an ordinary iron sword would’ve sufficed.
I made a mistake. I should’ve been more insistent with Maester about making a regular sword. It’s true that I was also thrilled about making a greatsword at the time.
In other words, a man can’t resist his romantic ideals.
“If you want to test that sword’s cutting ability, please do so during the mountain investigation that starts in earnest tomorrow.”
“I know. Ah, but I want to try it out right now…”
As he said this, Brother Leonard affectionately rubbed his cheek against the greatsword.
This is bad. It seems that Balt suggested keeping it in the first-floor warehouse partly to keep it out of Brother Leonard’s sight.
“Brother Leonard, just to be safe, please don’t tell anyone that the sword is made from pseudo-magic ore. Not even His Majesty the King.”
“Well… I’ll do my best.”
Brother Leonard suddenly turned serious as he said this. So, it wasn’t allowed after all. Without a doubt, this will be reported to His Majesty the King. Brother Leonard’s report is going to be even thicker this time. Oh no…
……….Could this be three strikes already?
No, not yet. It hasn’t turned into a huge commotion. A greatsword made from pseudo-magic ore might still be safe.
Besides, I didn’t willingly make it. I only made it because Brother Leonard asked me to. If he hadn’t asked, I wouldn’t have made it. In that case, the one who would get in trouble would be Brother Leonard, not me. Proof complete. No doubt about it.
Feeling relieved, I spent the rest of my time happily with everyone.
The next day, Brother Leonard cheerfully set off for the mountain investigation with the greatsword on his back. Of course, he also carried the holy sword Excalibur at his waist.
Everyone looked at Brother Leonard as if they were seeing something bizarre.
Trying to avoid that scene as much as possible, I headed to the mine again today. Although there were no other people in the tunnel yesterday, I heard there would be others from today onward.
Since several new veins have been discovered, they’re probably busy investigating them.
“Your Highness, the Third Prince, I look forward to working with you today as well.”
“Leave it to me. I’d like to get about halfway through by the end of today.”
“I’ll do my best to proceed cautiously yet swiftly.”
Yesterday was somewhat of a trial run. Today, I’ll give it my all. The investigation will continue into the afternoon. So I have to do my best.
And so, with the help of Marimo and Tetsujin, we continued through the tunnel. The further we went, the narrower the tunnel became, with more branching paths.
“Ma”
“It seems like there’s a vein here too.”
How many has it been now? I lost count after ten. I mean, every time we move forward a little, there’s another vein.
Each vein might be small in scale. But with this many, the total amount mined could be quite substantial. It doesn’t seem like they’ll run dry anytime soon.
“I wish there were a tool for finding ore veins.”
“If such a tool existed, it would be a great help to us as well,”
One of the supervisors who overheard my mumbling replied.
So, they don’t have anything like that either, huh? But if it were a magic tool, maybe…
Just as I was thinking that, Tetsujin started beeping. But this time, the reaction was different from anything I had seen before.
“What’s wrong, Tetsujin?”
“Ma, Ma!”
Is there something up ahead? Tetsujin was frantically pointing forward. The miners looked puzzled at Tetsujin’s behavior. It seemed they had no idea what was going on. In that case, should we try digging there?
With that thought, I summoned Moguran to start digging. I wonder what we’ll find? Maybe…… there’s a vein of magic ore!
