Episode 118: In Other Words, It Was Obvious.
“Duke Flute, I would like to spend some time in this room with Brother Gilliam, whom I haven’t seen in a while. Would it be alright if we stayed here together today?”
“Prince Rufus! Of course, certainly. If there’s anything you might need, I’ll bring it to this room right away.”
“Thank you.”
Duke Flute looked at me with eyes that seemed to say, “Are you a god?” He seemed to be under a lot of pressure. After exchanging greetings, Duke Flute quickly left the room. It seemed he was going to hurry and prepare everything. I’m sorry about my brother.
Brother Gilliam really is something else. He always acts immediately if it’s something for himself. Especially when it comes to magic tools or ancient ruins.
He must have seen the report written by Brother Leonard. It probably had my suggestion for an “ancient ruins sightseeing event” in it.
Hmm? If that’s the case, then surely His Majesty the King also had some kind of reaction when he saw that text.
“Brother Gilliam, His Majesty the King must have seen the report as well, right?”
“Yeah, that’s right. Apparently, after His Majesty saw the report, he let out a roar. That news reached me, and I wondered what happened. So I went to have a look. The report was wonderful. I was so impressed that I even shouted out loud myself.”
“I-I see. So, did His Majesty say anything?”
“Well, he tried to come here right away. But he was caught by Mother and lectured.”
Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. It’s not my fault! It was His Majesty the King’s lack of self-control.
(Note: “Nam-myoho-renge-kyo” is a phrase central to Nichiren Buddhism. The phrase is often chanted for spiritual empowerment, the realization of one’s potential, and the fulfillment of one’s desires.)
…..…Wait, maybe it was my fault after all. The moment we discovered the ancient ruins, I should have asked Moguran to seal it. I’ll make sure to do that next time.
“Brother Gilliam, as I mentioned in the report, the suggestion for the ancient ruins sightseeing event was something Rufus proposed for Duke Flute’s family, you know? It’s just a formal suggestion, right?”
“Of course I understand. But it’s fine to take advantage of that formality, right?”
“I’m not so sure about that.”
Brother Leonard showed a hesitant expression. From that, it was clear he had a strong desire to avoid getting involved.
He’s right. If things go poorly, both Brother Leonard and I might get scolded by Mother and be made to write lines. I think I’ll be the one doing the “sword practice” though. Mother, the demon!
“More than that, Rufus is still such a kind child.”
“Of course. He’s our proud younger brother.”
“……..”
It seems like I was trying to subtly support Duke Flute. But my two brothers saw right through it. I didn’t know how to respond to their grinning faces, so I turned away.
“Leonard, how are things with Miss Flare going? I noticed that you didn’t write much about that in the report.”
“I’ve already reported that to Mother. Was it necessary for you to know, Brother Gilliam?”
“Of course. I need to know what kind of person she is. If any strange bugs start following Rufus, it’ll be a big problem.”
Wow! This is turning into quite the ordeal. Normally, that’s something you’d do for a daughter, right? Not for a brother.
In other words, marrying me is going to be an extremely high hurdle.
If I ever fall in love at first sight and try to introduce someone to my family, it might not go through. This is beyond being overprotective.
I should stop thinking about it. It’ll turn out however it turns out.
And so, I began telling Brother Gilliam about everything that had happened so far. Since it was all written in the report, I thought it wouldn’t take too long. But that wasn’t the case.
“Ugh, Leonard really is like this. I’m glad we came here. I’ve told you before, right? It’s way too simplified.”
Brother Gilliam muttered to himself. It seems he didn’t like the report Brother Leonard wrote. Now I’m really curious to know what kind of report Brother Leonard wrote.
“Was it really that bad?”
“C-Come on, Rufus!”
“Yeah, it was. It says, ‘The thieves attacked, but there was no damage. The captured thieves were handed over to the town. Liberian was attacked by Goblins, but the damage was minimal. Actually, it’s the mountain Rufus destroyed that’s more concerning.’”
“B-Brother Leonard!”
It’s true, but that’s not what I meant! It makes it sound like I joyfully destroyed the mountain!
Ah, this is getting out of hand. I wonder if they’ve read my written apology? I made sure to write that I’m reflecting on my actions, so I think it should be okay.
“If it weren’t for Rufus’ report, this would’ve turned into a huge mess. And what does it mean that Rufus wrote a more proper report than you?”
“W-well, I… I’m just not good at writing.”
“That excuse isn’t going to cut it, you know?”
Whoa, scary. Brother Gilliam is smiling, but there’s a vein bulging on his forehead. He seems genuinely angry.
I had a feeling this would happen, but it looks like Brother Leonard really isn’t good at desk work. In that case, I think he needs someone to write reports for him.
“It looks like Brother Leonard might need a secretary.”
“A secretary?”
“Yes, someone who can handle confidential tasks and documents in place of Brother Leonard.”
“I see, a secretary. That sounds good.”
“That’s an interesting idea. It might be exactly what Leonard needs.”
Brother Gilliam started seriously considering my suggestion. Brother Leonard, of course, was totally on board. Looks like he really didn’t want to do desk work. I should’ve realized that sooner.
