Episode 12: In Other Words, No Overpowered Magic?
Wiping off his sweat with a damp towel, Gilliam-onii-sama tilted his head in thought. His silver hair, which reached down to his shoulders, swayed smoothly with the movement.
Man, Gilliam-onii-sama is such a handsome guy. He has the same silver hair and sapphire-blue eyes as me. But unlike me, he has this mature, alluring presence. I’m kind of jealous.
On the other hand, Leonard-onii-sama has short, golden hair. It gives him a wild, rugged look. If he stared at a woman with those intense blue eyes of his, I’m sure she’d start squealing on the spot.
“I completely forgot to ask. A lot happened yesterday, after all.”
“Yeah, no kidding. You only had the Summoning Skill on your mind yesterday, Rufus.”
As he spoke, Leonard-onii-sama ruffled my hair.
To be precise, it wasn’t the Summoning Skill I was obsessed with—it was the fluffy creatures! But I’ll just keep that to myself.
“Rufus, why don’t you try using some magic? If it’s here, even flashy spells shouldn’t be a problem.”
“Really? I’ll do it!”
“Alright, alright. Then let me be your teacher.”
What a turn of events! It looks like Gilliam-onii-sama himself is going to teach me magic. Since he possesses the Scholar Skill, he can use a wide variety of spells. This is gonna be great!
“First, let’s start with a simple spell that produces light. With this magic, you can illuminate places without candles or lanterns. Light.”
As Gilliam-onii-sama murmured the incantation, a small glowing orb appeared above his palm.
I’ve seen this spell plenty of times before. The servants use it all the time.
The Light spell falls under the category of Life Magic. Spells in this category have no offensive capabilities but are incredibly useful in everyday life. Plus, anyone can use Life Magic, regardless of the skills they inherit.
In other words, it’s magic anyone can use. This is what I’ve been waiting for!
“Alright, Rufus, why don’t you give it a try?”
“Okay! I just need to say the spell’s name, right?”
…Huh? Did I mess up somewhere?
For some reason, both Gilliam-onii-sama and Leonard-onii-sama were tilting their heads in confusion. Not understanding what was wrong, I mimicked them. I was tilting my head as well.
The two of them exchanged glances.
I have a bad feeling about this…
“Rufus, just try to think—do you have a mental image of how to use it?”
“Huh? No, nothing’s coming to mind at all.”
As soon as I answered, Gilliam-onii-sama’s face froze into a stiff smile.
It was a smile I had never seen before.
Gilliam-onii-sama had never forced a smile at me like this before. I had seen him use this expression plenty of times when talking to noble ladies, though.
Feeling increasingly uneasy, I turned to Leonard-onii-sama for help.
“Alright, Rufus, think back to yesterday when you used your Summoning Skill. You didn’t need any specific instructions—you just instinctively knew how to do it, right?”
“Y-Yeah, that’s true.”
No doubt about it. Even when I used that embarrassingly dramatic incantation, the summoning still worked. And just this morning, I successfully summoned Pii-chan by calling out his name rather than using the skill category.
Wait… does that mean…?
“O-Okay, listen, Rufus. First, try gathering your magic power in the palm of your hand. Then imagine it forming into a ball of light. Once you have that image, say the spell’s name—Light.”
“O-Okay. I’ll try.”
I have a really bad feeling about this.
And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one.
Gilliam-onii-sama still had that awkward smile plastered on his face. While beads of sweat ran down his forehead.
Meanwhile, Leonard-onii-sama had already pressed a hand to his forehead. He was looking up at the sky in despair.
Don’t give up! Why are you giving up already?!
There’s still a one-in-a-million chance! I can do this! It’s all about mindset!
“L-Light!”
……..…But nothing happened.
No way. Tell me this is a lie, Lagios. This has to be a joke. I refuse to believe it. I probably just couldn’t use the Light spell, that’s all. Other Life Magic should work. I have to believe in myself.
“Gilliam-onii-sama! Teach me the next spell!”
“O-Okay, got it.”
“Master, do your best!”
“Pii-chan! Don’t give up! Get fired up, man!”
After that, I tried spells that produced embers, spells that created water for washing hands, spells that generated drinking water, and even spells used to cool down on hot days or dry hair.
But… nothing!
What a cruel reality. It seems my Summoning Skill only allows me to summon magical creatures—nothing more.
“This can’t be happening…”
“Master… You did your best… *Sniff*…”
“Pii-chan! THIS CAN’T BE REAL, DONDONKODOON!”
As I collapsed onto my knees, a gentle hand was placed on my shoulder. It was Gilliam-onii-sama’s. Even though this wasn’t his fault, his face was filled with guilt.
“Rufus, don’t get too discouraged. If we ask Selvus, maybe he’ll know of some magic you can use.”
“That’s right. You couldn’t use Life Magic, but there are other types of magic. There’s bound to be something you can use.”
Their encouragement warmed my heart.
But deep down, they both must have realized it already—if I couldn’t even use the simplest Life Magic, then there was no way I could use more advanced spells.
I’ve never heard of such a thing happening before……….
