Episode 120: In Other Words, It’s the Demons’ Fault
The conversation smoothly shifted to the topic of the ruins investigation. It seemed that Duke Flute hadn’t expected the investigation to start so soon. And he appeared to be planning to make the necessary arrangements.
However, Brother Gilliam politely declined.
“I’ve brought everything we need for the investigation. So, please leave the rest to me.”
“I’m truly grateful for that. Honestly, this is my first time handling a ruins investigation, so I wasn’t sure what to do.”
“That’s understandable. Most ruins investigations are led by the country.”
Even if that’s the case, I don’t think Duke Flute expected the crown prince to personally show up. He must have been surprised. I was also surprised by how easily Brother Gilliam took charge.
After a few discussions between Brother Gilliam and Duke Flute, dinner time came to an end.
When we returned to the room, I wasn’t alone with Brother Gilliam—Brother Leonard also came into my room. It seemed like he was planning to stay there until bedtime.
Maybe he had a lot of things to talk about with Brother Gilliam? I didn’t really feel that way, though.
“Rufus, I’ve got a few things I want to ask you. First, why does Brother Leonard have the holy sword Excalibur?”
“Ah, that…… Well, Brother Gilliam, are you familiar with the Demons?”
“…I don’t want to believe it, but is it true?”
Brother Gilliam stared at me intensely. After exchanging glances with Brother Leonard, we both nodded in agreement.
Then, Brother Leonard took over the conversation and explained the situation with the Demons in place of me.
It seemed that Brother Leonard had expected this conversation. So he came to my room prepared. He shared information with me about the Demons that I didn’t know.
“So, does this mean that the bandits who were appearing near the town were being controlled by Demons?”
“Rather than being controlled, it’s more accurate to say they were used by the Demons. The strategies they carried out seem to have been taught to them by Demons.”
It seems that Brother Leonard and Duke Flute had been on high alert as they approached the town of Liberia. They had already known that the Demons were involved behind the scenes. I wish they would have told me earlier.
“Hmm, interesting. But did those people not realize they were dealing with Demons?”
“It seems not. Apparently, they appeared just like ordinary humans.”
“I see. So Demons might be able to take on human forms.”
Brother Gilliam pondered aloud.
That’s troublesome. If we can’t tell whether someone is a Demon just by looking at them, then if we encounter Demons in the future, we won’t know until it’s too late.
Oh, but Lagios had noticed.
“Lagios, come out.”
As a faint light emanated from my body, Lagios appeared on my lap. It looked like a little puppy. His round red eyes stared up at me. Without hesitation, I cuddled him, feeling a sense of comfort as I did. I had to squeeze in a few more sniffs. Ah, my heart feels full.
“…Did you call for me?”
“Hey, Lagios, you noticed the Demons, right? You said you sensed an evil presence. What exactly did you feel?”
“It was their magical power. Demons have a sticky, distinct magical power.”
I see, so Lagios could sense the magical power. If he can detect their magic, then maybe we can find Demons. Even if they’re disguised as humans.
Perhaps there’s a magic tool from the ancient civilization that could help with this. After all, it seems like they were fighting Demons.
“Rufus, have you thought of something?”
“Well, yes. I was thinking that there might have been magical tools in the time when the ancient civilization was thriving that could sense magical power.”
“Do such things exist?”
Brother Gilliam stared at me with eager eyes. I might have made a mistake with my response. This wasn’t the best topic to bring up to Brother Gilliam, who is a fan of ancient civilizations and loves magical tools.
But I’m curious too. And as long as we’re just talking, it should be fine, right?
“I wonder, Tora-chan.”
A treasure chest the size of a jewelry box appeared in front of me. It wasn’t decorated extravagantly, but I liked the rough wooden texture and the feel of it. I patted Tora-chan, who seemed to be enjoying it.
“What’s the matter?”
“Do you have any tools in you that can sense magical power?”
“Hmm, yes, I do.”
Upon hearing Tora-chan’s response, Brother Gilliam’s eyes lit up. He moved closer. It was a bit suffocating, so I hoped he’d stop. But whether he knew how I felt or not, Brother Gilliam didn’t stop.
“Rufus, could you show me? Just a little bit, please.”
“Just to look, okay? Tora-chan, show him.”
“Understood. Here you go.”
What Tora-chan took out was a rectangular tablet. Doesn’t ancient civilization have technology that’s too advanced? This feels like over-the-top technology, even on the level of modern tech.
It didn’t seem to have a fingerprint scanner, so I just powered it on normally. Wow, it has all sorts of apps. Is this the magic power detection app? I pressed it.
“…Rufus, how do you know how to use this?”
“I-I don’t! I’m just pressing buttons randomly.”
Brother Gilliam and Brother Leonard both looked suspicious. Oh no, this is bad. I need to cover it up somehow. What do I do?
“J-Just look! It seems like this can detect magical power!”
Hmm? What’s with these numbers? Can it measure the amount of magical power? What is this, high-tech?! This mysterious technology is so amazing!
