Episode 121: In Other Words, It Means We Should Just Put It Away
It seems that the magical power detection range on the tablet isn’t very wide. Maybe about the size of this entire room? If that’s the case, the detection range is too narrow.
Thinking that, I casually pinched the screen to zoom out. The selection range shrank, and it became about the size of the entire inn. I see.
“Rufus, what’s going on? Could you explain it in a way I can understand?”
“Um, I don’t really understand it well. But it seems that by doing this, the magical power can be detected over a larger area.”
I actually used my fingers to pinch the screen. Brother Gilliam and Brother Leonard were staring at it with expressions as if they were looking at something strange. It’s a reaction that happens the first time you see it. Once you get used to it, it’s a really convenient feature.
“So, this means you’re sensing the magical power around the inn right now? There are a lot of them.”
“Everyone has magical power, so I think the number of these green dots corresponds to the number of people.”
“In that case, what does the difference in the size of these dots mean?”
“Probably, it represents the amount of magical power they possess.”
I think that interpretation is probably correct. If that’s the case, it means I have quite a large amount of magical power. Even when zoomed out, the difference between me and the others is still noticeable.
“I see. If they were Demons, they would have much more magical power than us, right? Maybe that’s how we can identify them.”
If that’s the case, there might be wrongful accusations happening. There might be people with an enormous amount of magical power among humans too. It would be a shame if such capable individuals were falsely accused of a crime.
Speaking of which, Lagios mentioned that there were Demons at the western edge. Let me try checking over there.
I zoomed out to display the entire Duke of Flute’s territory and swiped the screen westward.
At this size, no dots other than the one representing me appeared. It seems there’s a display limit. It’s better than having a swarm of tiny dots all over the place.
As I moved toward the western edge, a dot of a different color appeared. While we were all green dots, this one was red.
“What’s this red dot?”
Brother Gilliam, who was peering at the tablet, murmured.
“Probably a Demon. What do you think, Lagios?”
“That’s right. As expected of my master.”
Lagios puffed out its chest and breathed out in a proud huff. It was tilting its head upward. It seems it’s proud of its capable master. What a cute little guy. I patted Lagios’ head and, as a bonus, gave it a little sniff.
“Demons have different colors. With this, we should be able to tell them apart easily. This place is at the western edge, so it seems like Demons won’t be a problem for a while, right?”
“That seems to be the case. Oh, if that’s the case, it looks like it’s safe to return the holy sword Excalibur.”
“Rufus, you demon!”
Brother Leonard hugged the holy sword Excalibur tightly. It already seemed like it was his. I had only said I’d lend it to him, but he’s acting like it’s his own. What a troublesome older brother.
But I steeled myself and took the holy sword Excalibur back. I didn’t want to get scolded by the King and my mother. I also decided to put the tablet away.
“Hey, Rufus! Why are you putting that in Tora-chan!?”
“Brother Gilliam, you said you just wanted to take a look, didn’t you?”
“Rufus, you devil!”
Why are my brothers like this? Even if I let them have their way, it’ll just end up with them being scolded and putting things back in Tora-chan anyway.
Seeing the two of them slump their shoulders, I couldn’t help but feel uneasy about the future of this country. What a hassle.
“By the way, Rufus, the dot representing you earlier was really big, wasn’t it?”
As if remembering, Brother Gilliam lifted his head. Brother Leonard also started thinking, resting his hand on his chin.
“Now that you mention it, it was. Even when we zoomed out the map, it seems like only your green dot remained visible.”
“Really? Was that the case?”
I tried to cover it up in a hurry. But the two of them weren’t letting up with their questioning. They were looking at me with such expectant expressions.
Maybe if I whistle and look away, they’ll let it go? Probably not, huh?
“I’ve been thinking about this for a while, but now I’m sure of it. Rufus, you’re not normal.”
“Not normal!? Brother Gilliam, that kind of remark is hurtful!”
“Sorry, sorry. It just slipped out. Rufus is just… a bit of an unusual kid, right?”
“That doesn’t really sound like a compliment, though.”
I couldn’t help narrowing my eyes and glaring at Brother Gilliam. In response, Brother Gilliam gave me a relaxed smile. I guess my glare isn’t much of a threat. Maybe I should send Lagios after him.
As I was thinking that, Brother Leonard placed his hand gently on my shoulder.
“Rufus, if you don’t realize it yet, you should be more self-aware. I believe you’ll be a person whose name will go down in history.”
“Brother Leonard…!”
“So, about the holy sword Excalibur…”
“No.”
“Tch.”
Wait, did Brother Leonard just click his tongue!? Trying to win me over to add the holy sword to his collection? That’s a hundred years too early, my friend.
I’m so glad I put away the magic tool and the holy sword. It was definitely the right decision.
