Episode 123: In Other Words, I’m Always Serious
It seemed that the usual official would be serving as our guide through the tunnel again this time. The executives and miners had more serious expressions than usual. They greeted us.
Of course, I introduced Flare-chan as well. I explained that she would be joining us.
“Duke Flute’s daughter is coming along as well? I’ll have to be extra careful now.”
“With that phrasing, it sounds like you’re saying I was slacking off when I was alone?”
“No, no, not at all. I’ve been keeping myself focused every day.”
We laughed together as we chatted. This was the behavior of comrades who completely trusted each other. Flare-chan watched us with envy. I wonder if she wants to join in? I don’t mind, though.
We walked deeper into the tunnel with familiar steps. Of course, I’d already summoned Marimo to light the way. To foster a sense of camaraderie, I asked Flare-chan to hold Marimo.
“It’s amazing. Marimo-chan is gently warm, isn’t she?”
As if responding to her words, Marimo flickered. Marimo can’t speak, but it can communicate through flashes of light. Of course, the color of the light can change, too.
“It seems like the temperature can be changed freely.”
“So it’s not just about lighting up. Marimo-chan is incredible.”
It seems that Flare-chan really likes Marimo. However, people who don’t have a Summoning Skill can’t summon a Lightmoth like Marimo. It would have been nice if we could lend out magical creatures.
As we continue, the walls of an ancient ruin came into view. At that moment, Brother Gilliam started running. I didn’t know Gilliam-nii-sama could run that fast. Brother Leonard seemed astonished as well.
“I’ve just seen Brother Gilliam’s true seriousness.”
“I’ve seen it too.”
“When will Rufus ever show his true seriousness?”
“That’s rude. I’m always serious.”
“Alright, alright, I’ll let you say that.”
“Ugh…”
It’s true, though. Why doesn’t Leonard-nii-sama believe me? Does it not look like I’m being serious?
“Rufus-sama, is that the ancient ruin we talked about?”
“Yeah, it is. I’m not sure what’s inside yet, though. In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, Moguran!”
“Director, you called?”
“Moguran, could you expand the holes around that wall?”
“Leave it to me.”
With a sound like *Brrrrrrr*, a small space was quickly created. It’s probably big enough for us to work in. I also had Mogran create a pedestal to place Marimo on, and Flare-chan placed Marimo there.
“Somehow, Marimo looks divine.”
“It’s mystical, isn’t it?”
As we both admired it, Brother Gilliam suddenly flew over. I wonder why he’s in such a hurry? Does he need more space or something?
“Rufus, did you do that magic just now?”
“Well, no, it wasn’t me, it was Moguran’s magic.”
“In that case, it’s the same as if you did it, Rufus. I’m really surprised by you. Even someone well-versed in Earth Magic can’t create a space like this in such a short time.”
“I see. As expected of Moguran. Incredible!”
I put on a cheerful act. But deep inside, I’m feeling uneasy.
I think I might have gone a little overboard lately. Lagios is one example, and so is Maester. They’re standing out in ways I didn’t expect.
The magical creatures summoned with the Summoning Skill are all fluffy and cute!
I want to live with fluffy creatures using the Summoning Skill!
That was the plan. But now, I might not be conveying the true value of Summoning Skills.
While I was thinking this, the excavation team, including Brother Gilliam, was carefully examining the exposed wall. What are those unfamiliar tools? They don’t look like magical tools. Can they really learn something with those?
But I’m just a novice. It’s probably best for a novice to stay quiet.
Before long, it seems they had figured something out. People began gathering in front of the wall. Brother Leonard had been called over too. Curious, we headed that way as well.
“It seems there are no traps set in the walls around here. So, it should be fine to break through this wall.”
“Understood. Leave it to me.”
Oh, it looks like Brother Leonard is about to break the ruin’s wall.
Wait, wait—aren’t you supposed to break it with a pickaxe or hammer? Why is Brother Leonard pulling out the greatsword he’s carrying on his back?
“Leonard, that sword…”
“Oh, this is the greatsword that Rufus made for me this morning. Pretty amazing, right? The sharpness is top-notch. Brother Gilliam, if you want one, why not ask Rufus to make one for you?”
“Hmm, well, I am curious about the materials for that sword. But I don’t really need a sword.”
Brother Gilliam is so honest. He’s really bad at swordsmanship, after all. It seems he doesn’t have a hobby of collecting swords. However, his eyes were fixed on Leonard-nii-sama’s greatsword.
I bet he’s going to ask me about it when we get back to the inn. It looks like I won’t be able to sleep tonight after all.
If that’s the case, I’d want to take a nap now. But at the same time, I’m really curious about the ancient ruin.
The technology from that time must have been unimaginable. If it’s still untouched and preserved, it’s only natural that anyone, not just Brother Gilliam, would want to see it.
I’m also interested in the guardians, so maybe I’ll go along too.
