Episode 124: In Other Words, I Won’t Be Able to Sleep Tonight
Thanks to Moguran expanding the area around the ancient ruin’s wall, Brother Leonard can now swing his greatsword without any problems. After clearing people away from the area, he takes a deep breath and swings the sword with all his might.
After swinging it a few times, the ruin’s wall collapses with a loud crash. It looks like it’s been sliced into very fine pieces. This will probably make cleaning up easier.
Brother Leonard proudly carried the greatsword on his back. He must’ve been pleased with his skill. Honestly, I think it was a magnificent display of swordsmanship.
“Such sharpness. The walls of these ancient ruins are known for their sturdiness. But I didn’t expect them to be so easily sliced through. Leonard, is that sword made of magic ore?”
“It’s not made of magic ore. You should ask Rufus for the details.”
Gah! Brother Leonard just passed the buck entirely onto me! But this is tricky. I don’t think it’s a good idea to talk about pseudo-magic ore here. What should I do?
Seeing my troubled expression, Brother Gilliam seemed to pick up on it.
“Rufus, when we get back to the inn, I’ve got a few questions I want to ask. Is that okay?”
“Of course.”
Looks like I can’t refuse that. I’ll have to accept it. Sometimes, giving up is important. *Sigh.* Well, I guess I’ll skip going into the ruins and take a nap instead. I probably won’t be able to sleep tonight anyway.
Just as I was thinking this, Flare-chan wouldn’t let me off that easily.
“Rufus-sama, aren’t you excited to see what’s inside the ancient ruins?”
“Y-yeah. I hope there’s no danger.”
Flare-chan suddenly wrapped her arm around mine. It’s a good thing her chest is flat. Really, really good. Wait, but as I concentrate, there seems to be a slight curve…
What am I even thinking? There’s no way that could be happening at our age. If it is, she’s developing way too quickly!
I tried to shake off my flustered thoughts. The survey team had finished removing the rubble. They entered the ruins through the wall Brother Leonard had destroyed. I was pulled along by Flare-chan, following them inside.
“Better safe than sorry. In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, Lagios! And also, Tetsujin!”
Light shone from my body. Lagios, about the size of a puppy, and Tetsujin, the same height as me, appeared. Lagios was assigned as a guard, and Tetsujin was to help with the ruins investigation.
“Master, your command?”
“Ma!”
“Lagios, stay close to me. Tetsujin, let me know if you find anything.”
“Understood.”
“Ma.”
I handed Marimo to Flare-chan and entered the ruins last. The walls, illuminated by Marimo, seemed to be covered with a thin metallic surface.
I’m impressed that Brother Leonard was able to slice through that metal too. As expected from someone with the Sword Saint Skill.
I touched the metal wall, and it felt cool. It had no particular sense of discomfort. What kind of metal could this be? I thought it was iron, but it doesn’t seem to be rusted at all.
“Brother Gilliam, what is this metal wall made of?”
“We’re still investigating. They say it’s probably an alloy of iron and something else, but we’re not sure yet.”
I see. In that case, it might be better to summon Maester and ask him. He seems to know a lot about metals. But of course, I won’t do that here.
It looks like the area we’ve entered is a corridor leading somewhere. The ceiling is about three meters high, and the width of the corridor seems to be about the same.
Could this have been a research facility? Or perhaps a military one? At least it doesn’t seem like a place for people to live. As we walk down the straight corridor, a metal door comes into view. It has a dull silver glow and looks thick and sturdy.
The survey team immediately begins investigating the door.
“I wonder what kind of facility this was. What do you think, Flare-chan?”
“I’ve never seen a building like this before. It doesn’t have windows, so it can’t be a castle.”
“Now that you mention it, there are no windows.”
It feels like a completely sealed space, but I can spot something like a ventilation shaft in the ceiling. Also, it looks like there are downlights installed. If there’s a power supply somewhere, we could turn the lights on immediately.
“Hmm, this door doesn’t seem like it will open. Looks like we’ll have to break it down.”
“In that case, I’ll do it.”
In front of the door, an unsettling voice could be heard. That metal door seems impossible to break through. Even if Brother Leonard’s greatsword doesn’t break, the blade will probably get chipped.
If that happens, I think Brother Leonard’s spirit would break. That wouldn’t be good.
“Brother Gilliam, could I take a look at the door too?”
“Of course, go ahead! No, actually, I’m more than happy to show you!”
Brother Gilliam spread his arms wide. His eyes were sparkling with excitement. It looked like he was thinking, “I’ve gained another ally! Yay!” Too bad, but that’s not what I’m aiming for.
I moved with Flare-chan in front of the door. Yeah, this seems like it would be really tough to break.
“Hmm? What’s this? Ah, this panel here opens.”
I found a panel on the metal door that can be opened. Inside, there were buttons with symbols on them. There also seemed to be a socket, probably for emergency use.
“Ah, those buttons? It looks like they’re broken.”
“You pressed them, didn’t you?”
“Yeah.”
I wonder if that was okay? They say curiosity killed the cat, but I have a feeling that Brother Gilliam might be the type to get into trouble because of his curiosity. It’s kind of scary to think he might really lose his life one day.
And I think, although it’s just a guess, it’s not that the buttons are broken—it’s probably that there’s no power.
If that’s the case, there should be a way to unlock the door for emergencies when the power is cut off. The suspicious part might be that socket.
