Episode 126: In Other Words, I’m Just a Careless Guy
“Rufus, I want you to be honest. You have magic crystals, don’t you?”
“Uh, well, I might have a few inside Tora-chan… or maybe not…”
Of course, I definitely have them inside Tora-chan. There’s no doubt I have over a hundred. But I’m not saying that out loud. If I do, they might ask me to share a bunch of them for research purposes.
If Brother Gilliam gets too absorbed in his magical device research, not only will he get in trouble with Mother, but I might get scolded, too.
Wait, am I already in trouble along with my brothers? No way… I’m just getting dragged into this, right? Tell me that’s true, Lagios.
“Rufus, I want you to make this magical device work for the sake of research.”
Brother Gilliam smiled. Oh, fine. Just this once, okay? It seems like my brothers are soft on me, but I can’t really talk, can I?
“In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, Tora-chan!”
“You called?”
“Tora-chan, please give me one small magic crystal.”
“Here you go.”
Tora-chan handed me a small magic crystal. I took it, flipped the tablet over, and opened the compartment where I assumed the crystal went.
I was right. A dull, used-up magic crystal rolled out. As expected, it was a small one. It was the same size as the one Tora-chan gave me.
I replaced the spent crystal with the new one. What should I do with this used-up crystal? If I just toss it somewhere, will Brother Gilliam get mad?
“Brother Gilliam, what should I do with the used magic crystal?”
“I want it for research. Definitely don’t just throw it away somewhere.”
Brother Gilliam swiftly appeared by my side and took it as if it were a treasure. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, I suppose.
I pulled myself together and turned on the tablet.
Just as I thought, it wasn’t broken. Strange characters were flashing on the screen.
Oh no! I can’t read ancient script! As I wondered what to do, Brother Gilliam, who was looking at the screen beside me, muttered:
“No-w-lo-a-ding…? What does that mean?”
“Oh, um, it means it’s booting up.”
“…You sure know a lot, Rufus. Didn’t you say you couldn’t read ancient characters?”
Uh-oh! Why am I so careless? I really need to think before I speak. C’mon, think! Think of a way to get out of this!
Oh, I’ve got an idea!
“T-Tetsujin taught me!”
“Wha!?”
“Tetsujin seems really shocked… Is that true?”
Brother Gilliam noticed Tetsujin’s surprise. Sharp as always. But Tetsujin can only say ‘Ma’. That leaves plenty of room for interpretation—no, it’s practically full of loopholes.
“It’s true. Right, Tetsujin?”
“Ma!? …Ma…”
“See? That’s what it said!”
“I have no idea what it’s saying… But that’s the power of your Summoning Skill, huh? You can understand that.”
Brother Gilliam looked impressed. Of course, I don’t understand it completely. That’s exactly why this works. It can be interpreted however I want.
Tetsujin seemed to catch on, too. Looks like it’s playing along. I’ll give it some ore as a reward later.
I somehow managed to fool Brother Gilliam, but now what? I can’t read ancient script. So even if this tablet is working, I won’t understand what’s on it.
I don’t know if it’s safe or dangerous to show this screen to Brother Gilliam.
With a sound like *Gnyooon*, the tablet finished booting up. There were several icons on the screen, but I couldn’t read the ancient text. I’d have to figure it out by the icons alone.
…………I guess I have no choice but to rely on Brother Gilliam. I could summon Tia to help decipher it, but I doubt Brother Gilliam would just quietly let that happen. Showing him would probably be faster.
“Brother Gilliam, I can’t read what’s written on this. Could you please decode it?”
“Leave it to me. Uh, there’s a user manual, a specification sheet, a terminal map, an airship schedule… Airship!?”
Oh no. I knew I should’ve summoned Tia to decipher this. I never would have guessed that this place was an airship landing site. And it turns out that the flying ship was indeed called an “Airship”. It’s probably just a coincidence, but I’m glad I was right.
…A coincidence? Is it really just that? I felt a slight chill run down my spine.
“Brother Gilliam, what’s an Airship?”
“Oh, Leonard, you don’t know about them? Rufus… looks like you do, though.”
“Ah, no, I don’t know much about them either. I’d appreciate it if you could explain it to me along with Brother Leonard.”
It seemed that Brother Gilliam’s shout was heard, as the scattered members of the expedition gathered around. They all started murmuring in surprise, “Airship!?” This is bad—we’ve stumbled upon something huge.
If there’s even a chance that an Airship is still here, it would cause a massive uproar. I wonder if there’s any way to blow it up before it’s discovered…………
