Episode 128: In Other Words, It’s a Security System
We continued forward and arrived near the hangar. According to the map, the hangar should be on the other side of that door. It would’ve been great if the map could also tell us whether the Airship was still there. But unfortunately, that much wasn’t clear.
As we got closer to the door, Brother Leonard stopped. Everyone else halted in response.
“Leonard, is something wrong?”
“I don’t sense any monsters, but there’s a slightly ominous feeling up ahead.”
“I see. If it’s just a slight uneasiness, we should be able to proceed, don’t you think?”
Brother Gilliam tilted his head in curiosity. It seemed he knew more about Brother Leonard’s Sword Saint Skill than I did. Judging by his reaction, he must have concluded that it wasn’t a serious concern.
However, Brother Leonard made a slightly conflicted face. His eyebrows were lowering a bit.
“Well, last time, I underestimated that feeling and failed. It seems that having Lagios nearby lowers my alertness.”
“That’s the first I’m hearing of this. Can you explain?”
Brother Leonard explained to Brother Gilliam how having Lagios nearby made the presence of Demons feel less threatening. Brother Gilliam nodded, looking convinced.
“In that case, it sounds like there shouldn’t be any problems. If anything happens, Lagios should be able to handle it, right, Rufus?”
“That’s true, but it might go overboard, you know? Like maybe wiping out the entire Airship nearby.”
“That would be terrible! Ugh…”
Brother Gilliam let out a shout. He was making a face no prince should ever make. Come on, no need to look like that. Look, Flare-chan’s smile is stiffening. The investigation team members seemed accustomed to it. They merely gave wry smiles.
“Alright then, if Leonard can’t handle it, we’ll ask Rufus for help. Leonard, we’re counting on you.”
“Leave it to me!”
Brother Leonard energetically accepted the task of fighting. If it wasn’t a monster, then it was probably a Guardian. The thought of fighting one seemed to excite him.
Even after all this time, the Guardian appeared to still be functioning. Their advanced technology was truly incredible.
The investigation team members carefully examined the door. It didn’t seem like it would open easily. So in the end, I had to open it myself.
“It looks like an alarm trap is set up. Unfortunately, I couldn’t disable it.”
“An alarm? Does that mean the Guardian will come if it goes off?”
“Exactly. You’re well-informed, huh?”
“Ah, no, I just had a feeling.”
It appeared to be the building’s security system. But how was it still functioning without any power source?
If the Guardians only activated when the alarm went off, then it made sense they had survived to this era.
“Brother Gilliam, have you encountered similar traps in other ruins?”
Brother Leonard asked excitedly, his eyes sparkling. While Brother Gilliam nodded deeply, his expression tense. He seemed fully aware of the danger involved.
However, his curiosity clearly outweighed his caution. He dragged me along with him.
“It seems so. I’ve only read about it in documents, but there’s no doubt about it.”
“Brother Gilliam, is there any possibility it could be a different kind of trap?”
“No need to worry, Rufus. In all the ancient ruins discovered so far, only this type of trap has been found.”
Good. At least the door wouldn’t blow up upon opening. In that case, what everyone thought was a trap was probably just a security system.
From an objective perspective, we were trespassers, after all. It was only natural to trigger the security system.
With Brother Leonard here, we should be fine even if the alarm went off. If things got out of hand, I could always ask Lagios to punch it. Kicking would work too. Just as long as it didn’t use magic.
“Alright, I’m going to open the door now. Is everyone ready?”
“Yeah, bring it on.”
“Leonard, there will be a short delay between triggering the trap and the Guardian’s arrival. So don’t overdo the anticipation.”
They must trust Brother Leonard. Although they seemed tense, there was still a sense of composure. Of course, I wasn’t worried at all since I had Lagios, Tetsujin, Marimo, and Moguran with me.
If this team wasn’t enough, then I could simply call for everyone else.
“Tetsujin, could you open this door? Be careful.”
“Ma.”
*Click.* The sound of the lock disengaging echoed. It seemed that the alarm wouldn’t go off at this stage. In that case, would it trigger the moment the door opened?
“The lock is open.”
“Alright, open the door—carefully.”
“Understood.”
The members of the investigation team were wearing tense expressions. They pushed the door. Despite having been left untouched for so many years, the door slid open smoothly to the sides.
No sound came from it. Was the security system broken, perhaps?
“Nothing’s happening.”
“It seems that way. But don’t let your guard down. The Guardian might be moving somewhere we can’t see.”
Hearing this from Brother Gilliam, Brother Leonard cautiously adjusted the greatsword on his back. I also decided to stay alert as we entered the hangar. Now then, I wonder if the Airship is still inside.
“Lagios, Tetsujin, Marimo, Moguran, if you notice anything, let me know immediately.”
“Leave it to us.”
“Ma!”
“Leave it to me~”
Along with everyone’s voices, Marimo blinked with a *piko-piko* sound. After confirming this, I followed my brothers further inside.
