Episode 129: In Other Words, Like Kids at an Amusement Park
Just as shown on the map, the space was vast. Numerous thick pillars stood tall. They seemingly supported the ceiling. Even with Marimo’s light, the ceiling was so high that it was barely visible.
“This place is huge. An entire mansion could fit in here.”
“This is astonishing. I wonder how much weight each of these pillars is supporting.”
As he spoke, Brother Gilliam touched a nearby thick pillar. It seemed to be made of some kind of metal, making it look incredibly sturdy. With this, the ceiling didn’t seem like it would collapse anytime soon.
As we cautiously moved forward, a large shadow came into view. It certainly looked like a ship.
“C-Could that be…?! Rufus, can you make the light brighter?”
“I can, but wouldn’t it be better to illuminate it from above?”
“Then, Master, allow me to take Marimo up.”
“Yeah, let’s do that. I’m counting on you, Ragios.”
“Leave it to me.”
Handing Marimo to Lagios, it flapped its white wings and soared into the air. Ah, that looks nice. Must feel great.
Once it was up high, Marimo began to glow like a miniature sun. It brightly illuminated the area below—just like daylight.
And so, the full form of the Airship became clear.
“So this is an Airship, huh…”
Attached to the top of the hull were three balloon-like structures lying horizontally. Were those responsible for providing lift? Looking closely, the surfaces slightly reflected light. It means they might be made of some kind of metal. It seemed there were three of them in total.
“This is amazing! Incredible! The Airship I’ve dreamed of seeing!”
Brother Gilliam suddenly took off running. The investigation team followed behind him. They were smiling and dashing forward as if they were racing each other. They were acting like children at an amusement park. Meanwhile, those of us who remained on alert were starting to feel ridiculous.
I think I’m allowed to complain a little about this.
Just as I turned to Brother Leonard, hoping to share my frustration, I noticed that he was wearing an unusually serious expression.
“Brother Leonard?”
“Quiet. I hear something… a sound I’ve never heard before.”
“Huh?”
I strained my ears. Indeed, from a distance, I could hear a *whirrrrrr…!*—a motor-like sound.
That… that’s a Guardian, isn’t it? This is bad!
I couldn’t call back Lagios and Marimo, who were providing light from above. If I did, visibility would worsen. That meant we had no choice but to fight with our remaining forces.
“Tetsujin, Moguran, stay on guard. Brother Leonard, I think it’s a Guardian.”
“So that’s the Guardian, huh.”
Brother Leonard drew the sword from his back. I looked in the same direction he was staring at, but I saw nothing. Just what was he seeing? It was a little unsettling.
Brother Gilliam and the others were completely absorbed in their excitement. They seemed oblivious to the approaching Guardian. It looked like we’d have to handle this ourselves.
“Miss Flare, go to Brother Gilliam.”
“I-I’ll fight too!”
A strong determination burned in Flare-chan’s eyes. She must have felt that she couldn’t be the only one to flee while the royals stood and fought. Even though she was still young, she had a noble spirit.
But what should I do? While I respected her resolve, I wanted her to evacuate somewhere safe.
“Miss Flare, I want you to protect Brother Gilliam while he’s defenseless. Take some knights with you. This is an important mission. You will be guarding the Crown Prince of this nation.”
“U-Understood!”
Flare-chan quickly ran toward Brother Gilliam. That should be fine for now. The real issue was how strong the Guardian would be.
As I pondered this, Brother Leonard grinned—not a usual smile, but a mischievous smirk—as he looked at me.
“Rufus, you’re not being honest, are you? You could’ve just protected Miss Flare yourself.”
“That wasn’t my intention. I simply thought this was the best course of action.”
“If you say so.”
No, really, that’s all it was.
But now I was worried Brother Leonard might send some weird letter filled with unnecessary implications. If that letter ended up reaching Mother… things could take an unexpected turn.
I should probably check whatever letter he writes in advance.
“If I may be honest, Rufus-sama, I would have preferred that you also escape with Miss Flare.”
“That’s impossible, Balt. Brother Gilliam told me to take over if Brother Leonard was in trouble.”
“I figured as much.”
Balt let out a sigh of resignation. He probably understood the situation deep down, but he just couldn’t stay silent about it. I always end up causing trouble for Balt and Ray.
To ease some of their worries, I had to make sure we got through this battle without anyone getting hurt.
The Guardians came into view—five of them. They were bipedal robots. And judging by the fact that they weren’t holding weapons, their goal seemed to be capturing us rather than attacking.
What happens after they catch someone? I was a bit curious. Would they take us to some kind of scolding room?
“Golems made of metal… This is going to be tough.”
“They may have hidden weapons inside their bodies. Please be careful.”
“Hidden weapons inside them? Got it. I’ll stay alert.”
Brother Leonard adjusted his stance with his sword just as the Guardians slid toward us. It looked like they had rollers on the bottoms of their feet. That meant their movements might be different from what I expected.
I had to be careful not to rely on assumptions.
