Episode 13: In Other Words, Magical Creatures Are Cheating
“Rufus, is something wrong?”
“Well…”
It was breakfast time. In the dining room, it was just the three of us and our parents. Mother quickly noticed that something was off with me.
*Sigh*… I let out a sigh without realizing it. I had been looking forward to the day I could use magic.
Giliam-onii-sama must have explained things in a low voice, because Mother suddenly let out a surprised “Oh my!”
This is awkward. Extremely awkward. I want to turn into a clam and sink to the bottom of the ocean. Is this where I get exiled? No way, right? I only have a Summoning Skill!
“Rufus, there’s nothing to be upset about. We’re here for you.”
“That’s right, Rufus. If you can’t use magic, then the people around you can just use magic instead.”
Ugh… My family’s kindness is overwhelming. Giliam-onii-sama’s encouragement must have helped Father understand the situation as well. Even so, Father simply smiled warmly at me—there was no sign of him trying to exile me. Thank goodness.
After breakfast, I headed to the Summoning Guild. By the way, do Lagios and Pii-chan need to eat? It only just occurred to me to wonder.
“Do Lagios and Pii-chan need food?”
“That is unnecessary. The energy required for our activities is continuously supplied from the Celestial Realm.”
“Pii-chan! Microwave incoming!”
“Nothing like that is coming, okay? Cut it out.”
So they constantly receive energy from the Celestial Realm? That’s basically a cheat ability. I may not have been a cheat, but it turns out magical creatures *are*.
In other words, they can do whatever they want, even more than I can.
Yeah, that’s a problem. I know way too little about Summoning Skills. I need to learn about them from Selvus as soon as possible.
I hurried toward the Summoning Guild. Honestly, I wanted to ride on Lagios’ fluffy back again and play out *The NeverEnding Story*. But I held back.
(Note: Just search for it yourself, please. It’s a film reference.)
If Mother saw me, she would *really* get mad this time. I wouldn’t get off with just a scolding—my butt would be in serious trouble.
“Good morning. Is everyone here?”
“Good morning, Prince Rufus.”
“Good morning, Guild Master.”
Alright, everyone’s here. Even though “everyone” only consists of three people. It’s kind of lonely.
Looking at this, I can understand why the gods want to increase the recognition of Summoning Skills.
If Summoning Skills became more well-known, more people might take an interest in them. And if that happened, the gods would probably have an easier time passing them down. I have to do my best.
“Yesterday, I barely got anything done because of everything that happened. But this morning, I have some time. I want you two to teach me a lot. First of all… what kind of magic can you use if you have a Summoning Skill?”
“……”
“……”
Oh. I see.
Selvus and Lala awkwardly looked away from me. Looks like they weren’t joking or lying—I really can’t use any magic at all. Magic? There’s no such thing. It never existed.
“Um… It’s difficult to say. But even if you inherit a Summoning Skill, you cannot use any magic.”
“I see. Well, it is what it is. So, Selvus, don’t make that face. It’s not your fault.”
“But Prince Rufus, your expression is… quite something.”
Well, of course it is. The dream I had waited for seven years—the dream of using magic—was shattered, like a broken window in a school building at night.
Summoning Skills are definitely a useless skill. Even though magical creatures are overpowered.
Wait… magical creatures are overpowered?
Come to think of it, during breakfast, they said, “If Rufus can’t use magic, the people around him can just use it instead.”
That’s it!
Why did no one realize this before? The answer is so simple.
“Fufufu… Ahahaha!”
“A-uh, Guild Master?”
Lala looked bewildered as I suddenly burst into laughter. Selvus also widened his eyes in surprise, staring at me. Somehow, the sight of their reactions struck me as oddly amusing.
I see… So that’s why Summoning Skill users can’t use magic. If they *could*, other skill holders would’ve been up in arms. They would’ve demanded it be “fixed” as an overpowered ability.
“Selvus, Lala, I have a great idea.”
“What might that be?”
“If we can’t use magic ourselves, we’ll just have the magical creatures use it for us!”
“W-what did you just say?!”
They must have never considered the possibility. Selvus shouted. His eyes and mouth were wide open in shock. Lala, on the other hand, clasped her hands over her mouth. Her round, crimson eyes widened like a bl00d moon.
The moment I come up with an idea, I act on it immediately. That’s one of my strengths as the third son—I’m more agile than my older brothers.
After all, I don’t have any burdens holding me back yet. I’m not the crown prince, I’m not the next knight commander, and I don’t have any exams to worry about. I’m free. Right now, no one can stop me.
