Episode 132: In Other Words, It’s Time to Storm In
It seems like everyone has higher expectations for me than I anticipated. Which makes me feel a bit pressured. But lunch with everyone was delicious.
After that, the conversation turned to how I defeated the Guardians. And one of the researchers decided to gather the wreckage.
I don’t see much point in collecting a pile of scrap metal, though. Judging by the destruction, it’s not like they can piece it back together like a plastic model.
Flare-chan declared that she would be sticking by my side. When she said that, both of my older brothers gave me very pleased smiles.
I have a feeling they’re going to report this to Mother in detail. I just hope they stick to the facts instead of adding unnecessary commentary. Before their report gets sent to the capital, I must check its contents.
Once lunch was over, we started our afternoon tasks. It seemed like those five Guardians were the last of them, as no reinforcements showed up while we were eating.
Brother Leonard looked a little disappointed. But honestly, I think this was for the best.
If more Guardians kept appearing, we wouldn’t have been able to conduct any investigations. For everyone’s safety, we probably would have had to retreat immediately and seal off the destroyed wall with Moguran’s sturdy walls.
“Looks like we can proceed with our afternoon work without worry.”
“Yeah. Let’s start by checking out the inside of the Airship.”
Thankfully, the Airship had a ramp already set up. It made it easy to board.
Climbing the steps carefully, I reached the top more easily than expected.
The floor beneath my feet was made of metal. It was similar to the material used in the walls of the ruins. It seemed to be a commonly used metal from the ancient civilization era.
Since it was used for Airships, it must be lightweight and durable. Maybe it was some kind of magical metal.
As I crouched down to feel its texture, Flare-chan mimicked me.
“It’s neither cold nor warm… Such a strange sensation.”
“Yeah, and the surface is a little rough, maybe to prevent slipping. It’s impressive that they could process metal like this.”
“You’re right! This must be designed to prevent people from slipping.”
We looked at each other and laughed.
…Huh. This kind of relationship isn’t so bad.
We continued exploring the upper deck. There were multiple bench-like seats installed. They were seemingly there so passengers could enjoy the view while in flight.
But standing on the deck mid-flight sounds like a dangerous idea. Maybe there’s some sort of mechanism to prevent people from falling off?
Looking up, I saw a massive bag-like structure attached to the top of the ship. It looked like fabric, but it was actually made of metal.
I was extremely curious about how it worked—it was as if the material was woven from metal threads.
“Crown Prince Gilliam! We’ve found an entrance! It looks like we can get inside from here!”
“I’m on my way.”
I moved with Brother Gilliam toward the back of the Airship. There, a section of the metal hull protruded slightly. That seemed to be the entrance.
The researchers had gathered around a metal door with a small, round transparent window.
…This isn’t glass, is it?
“Can you open it?”
“Yes, it doesn’t appear to be locked.”
“There’s a chance there are still Guardians inside. Proceed with caution.”
“Understood!”
Brother Gilliam warned everyone to be careful.
He had a point. The Guardians we fought earlier were too large to enter. But it wasn’t like there was only one type of Guardian.
There were probably ones specifically designed for Airship security. We’d have to stay on guard.
If that’s the case, I’d feel better bringing Brother Leonard in here with us…
But we need someone to guard both the exterior and the interior. If only there were two of him. Since that’s not possible, I’ll just have to handle things on this end.
“Tetsujin, stay alert.”
“Ma.”
Hmm… That sounded pretty relaxed.
That probably means there’s no immediate danger nearby.
Brother Leonard hadn’t reacted to anything either. So maybe the danger had already passed.
Still, I had no intention of letting my guard down.
The research team led the way as we proceeded through the dark interior of the Airship. Even though we were using the Light spell, the narrow corridors made it hard to see far ahead.
It would be nice if the lights would just turn on. I could see what looked like recessed ceiling lights installed above us.
Usually, in places like this, you’d expect a light switch near the entrance… But then again, if the power source isn’t working, the lights wouldn’t turn on anyway.
“What’s wrong, Rufus?”
“I was just thinking it’d be easier to investigate if we could turn the lights on.”
“Lights?”
Oh, crap. I forgot—electricity doesn’t exist in this world.
How should I explain this? Some kind of magic that illuminates the inside of the Airship?
“Ma.”
“Huh? You can do it?”
“Ma.”
With that, Tetsujin started pressing buttons on a control panel near the entrance.
Then, as if realizing something, it held out its hand.
“Ma.”
“Ah, you need a magic crystal, huh? Tora-chan, can you give me one?”
“Here you go.”
I handed the magic crystal to Tetsujin, and it placed it into some kind of box.
After pressing a few more buttons, the ceiling suddenly lit up with a bright flash.
There we go—much better.
