Episode 133: In Other Words, I Chose the Wrong Person
With the ceiling lights on, we could now see all the way down the corridor. As far as I could tell, there were no Guardians in sight.
“W-What is this…?”
“The ceiling has lit up. So those indentations in the ceiling were actually tools that emit light?”
“Rufus, care to explain this?”
Brother Gilliam was smiling at me—a *really* good smile. Uh-oh. Should I tell the truth? It’s probably best if I do, right? Then I could just push everything onto Brother Gilliam.
“This is a device powered by magic crystals. As you can see, it works as a substitute for lanterns.”
“So it doesn’t require fire, like a lantern would?”
“That’s right. It seems to glow using a different method.”
“As expected of Rufus. You really observe things well. So, what kind of method do you think it uses to emit light?”
I had no idea how this magic tool, which worked like the Light spell, actually produced light. If I started talking about filaments or electrical resistance, I’d probably just be making things up.
Yeah… I better not say anything careless.
“I don’t know that much.”
“I see. Even you don’t know, huh? Figuring out how this device works is going to be a challenge.”
Despite saying that, Brother Gilliam was smiling in a way that suggested he was enjoying the challenge. Yep, he really does love ancient civilizations and magic tools.
Still, why am I the standard for knowing things? I’d love to spend a good hour questioning that logic.
Now that we had light, we could walk forward with confidence. Even so, Flare-chan remained cautious. She was tightly holding onto my hand. I didn’t say anything, thinking that if it helped ease her tension even a little, then it was fine.
After squeezing through a corridor just wide enough for people to pass each other, we arrived at a room that seemed to be the cockpit. But the front of the room was completely dark.
I couldn’t see anything.
Wait, does that mean that chair is actually the pilot’s seat?
“A dead end? That oddly shaped chair doesn’t look like a throne.”
“I agree. And that direction is just a black wall. I have no idea why that chair is even there.”
Brother Gilliam and the research team were discussing the room as they examined it. Meanwhile, we stayed near the entrance, observing quietly.
There was a table with all sorts of buttons installed on it. These probably controlled the Airship’s movements.
“That black wall… It kind of looks like a painting, doesn’t it? But a completely black painting is a bit eerie.”
“A painting… I see. That makes sense.”
“Did you realize something?”
“Ah, no, I just thought it really does look like a painting.”
That wall was most likely a monitor. Right now, it was pitch black because there was no power. But once the Airship was operational, it would probably display the view outside.
The power source, huh?
Wait, right now the ship is running on some kind of temporary power thanks to Tetsujin, right? That means I might be able to activate that front monitor.
I stepped closer to the cockpit.
There were all sorts of buttons here too, along with ancient text inscribed on them. If I could decipher it, I could probably get it working.
Should I try it?
If that monitor turned on, a futuristic scene would unfold before us. I could feel the excitement bubbling up inside me.
I might even get to say something like:
Port side! The barrage is too thin! What are you doing?!
………Yeah, that would be amazing.
As I was thinking about this, I glanced at Flare-chan beside me. She was staring at me with hopeful eyes.
Ah, I get it.
Flare-chan wants to see something futuristic too!
This is for Flare-chan’s sake. I’m definitely not just giving in to my own curiosity, okay?
“In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, Tia!”
“Did you call for me, Darling?—Ugh, what is that musty smell?!”
Tia wrinkled her nose in disgust. Flare-chan, meanwhile, was staring at her with wide, round eyes.
Oh, right.
This was the first time Flare-chan had seen Tia.
“Let me introduce you. This is Tia, a Fairy. She specializes in Wind Magic and can also read ancient text.”
“A fairy! This is my first time seeing a real one. She looks exactly like the illustrations in fairy tales!”
“Well… yeah, I guess so.”
That might be true.
After all, I based her appearance on the illustrations from fairy tales and added my own imagination into the mix. The size is about the same as in the stories, but I think I’ve made quite a few changes to her overall look.
Tia, meanwhile, was eyeing Flare-chan as if she were evaluating her.
“Hmm? I always thought you were more of a butt guy, Darling.”
“Tia, what the hell are you saying?! More importantly, can you translate the text on these buttons for me?”
“I don’t mind, but—hmm!”
Tia suddenly shut her eyes and puckered her lips.
…Wait, what? Is she asking for a kiss?!
“Tia, what exactly do you mean by this?”
“A reward.”
“You’ve never asked for anything like that before!”
Oh, I see what’s going on here.
This is just Tia messing with me. She must be teasing me because Flare-chan is standing right next to me.
Realizing what Tia was implying, Flare-chan’s face turned bright red.
…So Flare-chan *does* know about this kind of stuff, huh?
Yeah, I didn’t need to know that.
What should I do?
If I refuse outright, Tia might sulk and refuse to translate anything for me.
“U-Um… later, okay?”
“I’ll hold you to that.♡”
Tia grinned mischievously. Flare-chan let out a tiny squeal and covered her face.
Yeah, we’re definitely being played with.
This is what Fairies are all about.
In other words—mischievous Fairies are no joke.
