Episode 134: In Other Words, We Have No Idea
(Note: Special for this chapter, dialogues from the speaker are in ‘…..’.)
Tia quickly translated the text on the buttons.
Flare-chan, however, seemed completely lost. Her eyes were darting back and forth in confusion.
Well, that makes sense. To someone unfamiliar with these terms, they might as well be gibberish. Words like monitor, sequence, and self-check wouldn’t mean anything to her. Even I spotted a few words I didn’t understand.
I wonder… will the day ever come when we can actually get this Airship flying? Honestly, it’s hard to believe.
“That’s all of them. Did you figure anything out?”
“Let’s see…”
If I press the buttons for monitor and main camera, something might happen.
We’ve come too far and sacrificed too much to back down now.
I took a deep breath, steeled myself, and started pressing buttons.
—
My hunch was right.
With a deep whirring sound, a bright light flickered across the front monitor.
Then, an image appeared.
It was the outside world—specifically, Brother Leonard’s back.
“Oh, wow! This is incredible!”
“Rufus-sama! The picture is moving! This is amazing!”
I couldn’t help but shout in excitement.
I mean, come on—who wouldn’t? I never imagined I’d get to witness something like this with my own eyes.
Based on this, I’m pretty sure we could get the radar working, too.
Flare-chan looked just as thrilled.
“Is this… showing the outside world!?”
“Unbelievable! The entire wall is displaying the scenery outside! So, this wall is like a mirror?”
Brother Gilliam was stunned, while the researchers nodded as if it all suddenly made sense.
Well… not exactly.
But considering how things work in this world, I guess their interpretation isn’t entirely wrong.
Damn… this really is some next-level futuristic technology.
Looking closely, the monitor is actually divided into twelve smaller screens. They all seamlessly pieced together a single image.
“Rufus?”
“Ah, Brother Gilliam! Isn’t this amazing?! Maybe I can even talk to Brother Leonard from here!”
I pressed the external speaker button and called out:
“Brother Leonard~?”
Outside, Brother Leonard and the knights around him suddenly froze.
Then, they started looking around, bewildered.
‘…I think I just heard Rufus’ voice.’
‘Me too. It sounded like it came from the Airship…?’
They turned toward the Airship, their faces filled with confusion.
Looks like the main camera is mounted on the front.
Also, the audio pickup is surprisingly good.
“I can see you from inside the airship right now.”
‘Uh… is that so?’
Brother Leonard waved hesitantly.
Yeah, he definitely doesn’t get what’s happening.
Well, I guess that’s fair. You’d have to see this setup to truly understand it.
Maybe I should let him come in and take a look? It seems safe enough for now.
“Rufus! What in the world is going on?!”
‘Oh, I hear Brother Gilliam yelling. Rufus… did you do something again?’
“This is a misunderstanding! …Actually, wait. Maybe it isn’t.”
‘Rufus…’
Brother Leonard’s exasperated muttering came through the mic loud and clear.
Seriously, this audio quality is insane.
I tried to avoid reality for a moment, but Brother Gilliam wasn’t about to let that happen.
And so, I found myself giving an impromptu explanation session.
I went over which buttons I pressed and what each one did.
Thankfully, I had switched the speaker off, so my voice wasn’t reaching outside.
Still, Brother Leonard and the knights kept glancing suspiciously at the Airship. They were trying to figure out where my voice had come from earlier.
…Crap. I totally distracted them.
I really shouldn’t have called out.
But hey, a man’s gotta follow his dreams.
It couldn’t be helped.
—
After listening to my explanation, Brother Gilliam let out a deep hmm. While the researchers furiously scribbled notes.
“Rufus, do you think we can get this Airship to fly?”
“Well… not unless we can get the main power source running. And besides, I still don’t understand how it actually flies.”
“How it flies, huh…? Maybe it works the same way as Lagios and Tia?”
“Hmm. That could be possible. Lagios, Tia—how do you two fly? Magic?”
Lagios and Tia exchanged glances.
Then, they both tilted their heads in confusion.
Ah. I see how it is.
They’re both instinctive flyers.
In other words—
They’re just flying because they can!
Yeah… there’s no way we can recreate that.
That means this Airship must be flying using a completely different principle from magical creatures.
“Brother Gilliam, is there no magic that allows people to fly?”
“There’s research on it, but I’ve never heard of anyone actually succeeding. It’s pretty risky, you know—like jumping off cliffs and hoping for the best.”
……….…Why would they go straight to jumping off cliffs?
Wouldn’t it be better to try floating up gently from the ground first?
Did they start with that and then resort to cliff diving because it didn’t work?
I have no idea.
Alright, let’s think about this with the knowledge I have.
If I had to guess, the round metallic objects on top of the airship could be filled with a light gas to make it float.
That seems like the most logical approach.
But given their size, there’s no way they could lift something as massive as this ship. They’re just too small.
Unless there’s some super lightweight gas that I don’t know about, it’s just not happening.
…But I definitely shouldn’t say that out loud.
The last thing I need is Brother Gilliam giving me that smiling interrogation—”How do you know about that, Rufus?”
Nope. Not happening. I’ll keep my mouth shut.
Better yet, let’s change the topic.
“Brother Gilliam, assuming we can get the Airship to fly… how do you plan on getting it out of here?”
Brother Gilliam froze.
So did the entire research team.
Flare-chan had this “Ah…” look on her face, while Balt and Ray were staring off into the distance like, “You’re only realizing this now?”
……….…So that was a blind spot for them, huh?
Maybe I shouldn’t have asked.
