Episode 18: In Other Words, I Choose You
Since we had the chance, I had Pii-chan and Ochun strike some poses. It was to help contribute to Lala’s sketching practice.
Let’s see…? Lala, your drawing is terrible! This is going to take a while. The road ahead is tough. But I believe that one day, she’ll be able to summon properly.
As I watched over Lala with warm encouragement, I noticed Selvus furrowing his eyebrows at her drawing.
“Selvus, is something wrong?”
“Well, I was just considering that since Prince Rufus has created new magical creatures in quick succession, we need to register them.”
“Ah, I see. That makes sense. We should record them not just for ourselves but for future generations as well. What do we need to do?”
“A description and… an illustration of the magical creature.”
“Ah…”
Now that I think about it, the magical creature encyclopedia does have incredibly detailed illustrations. They’re so precise, almost like photographs. Who drew those, I wonder? Well, I can say for sure it wasn’t Lala.
Judging by his hesitant answer, Selvus probably isn’t confident in his drawing skills either.
What a coincidence, Selvus. I’m also terrible at drawing. This is a problem. What should we do? Maybe Balt and Ray can draw?
“Balt, Ray, just in case—are either of you good at drawing?”
“Uh… yeah, no, that’s not really my thing…”
“I can’t draw.”
Balt scratched his head apologetically, while Ray flat-out declared it. His eyes were clear and unwavering. I had a feeling Ray’s artistic sense was just as hopeless as Lala’s. Now what?
Instead of deciding we’re doomed from the start, I should at least try drawing myself.
I sat next to Lala and began sketching Pii-chan and Ochun. Lagios and Cayenne peered at my work. They were curious about what I was drawing. Maybe I should have drawn Lagios instead? If I managed to make a decent drawing, we could have used it as an illustration.
“This is…!”
“Young Master, this is awful!”
“Hey, Cayenne! Do you really have to put it that way?”
Their reactions drew in Balt, Ray, Selvus, and Lala, all of whom leaned in to take a look at my drawing.
If you want to laugh, just go ahead. Their shoulders were trembling.
“Prince Rufus, I believe it would be best to commission a court painter.”
“Yeah, you might be right… but this feels like a loss. It’s frustrating. Oh, I know! I’ll have one of my summoned creatures draw for us! But what should I summon…?”
I can’t summon Picasso since he was a human. But maybe that muscular blue bear of a teacher…? No, that’s impossible too. Hmm, a bear……… a bear……… Alright, I choose you!
“In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, Art Bear!”
“Bear! Beaaar!”
“Whoa!?”
“Kyah!”
A bright yellow bear suddenly appeared. Selvus jumped back, and Lala toppled over in her chair again.
It seems she’s gotten used to falling because she didn’t hit her head. Of course, I helped her up right away.
Sorry, Lala. I didn’t mean to startle you.
“This is… a bear, isn’t it?”
“Yeah, it’s a bear. But a bear made specifically for drawing.”
“Bear, bear bear!”
“Hmm… it seems it can only say ‘bear’. Interesting. For a name… let’s go with Beartolt. It seems like it’d be a solid shield in battle. Take good care of me, okay?”
“Bear!”
First, I needed to check Beartolt’s texture.
It was about the same size as a bear you’d see at the zoo. The main difference was, of course, its color—its bright yellow fur gave it a somewhat cute and whimsical vibe.
That should help make it less scary.
I started by checking the fur around its belly. Unlike Lagios, its fur was shorter. But it had a nice, firm texture that felt great to touch. I bet sleeping on Beartolt would be really comfortable.
It looked like its fur was short all over. It meant it’d dry quickly after a bath.
“Anyone else want to touch it? It feels really nice.”
“Th-then… I’ll give it a try.”
“I’d like to touch it too. Ah, this is…!”
The two of them stroked Beartolt’s belly fur with delighted expressions.
Come to think of it, I hadn’t let them touch Lagios before. Since we were at it, I had them feel Lagios as well.
Though they were a bit hesitant at first, their expressions turned blissful as they felt its fur. The sheer power of Lagios’ coat was incredible.
I introduced the new member, Beartolt, to Lagios, Pii-chan, Cayenne, and Ochun. With all these fluffy and silky creatures gathered here, this space had become an absolute paradise.
Summoning Skills are the best. Thank you, Creator God. I am now living in a fluff-filled harem.
“Beartolt. I know it’s sudden, but can you show me what you can do?”
“Bear!”
Beartolt pounded its chest with a *thud*. That must mean “Leave it to me!” How reliable.
“Alright, can you start by drawing Lagios?”
“Bear.”
I handed Beartolt some paper and a pencil. And it began sketching Lagios with smooth, effortless strokes. Lagios struck a proud and dignified pose—this was bound to turn into an impressive portrait. I couldn’t wait to see the final result.
As Beartolt continued drawing, Selvus and Lala’s eyes sparkled with excitement.
“This is amazing. Even a court painter would be envious of this artwork.”
“It’s so good! Should I take lessons from Beartolt-sensei too?”
“Lala, everyone has strengths and weaknesses. Don’t worry about whether you’re good or bad at drawing. Just focus on observing Pii-chan and Ochun carefully. Think of drawing as a ritual to enhance your imagination.”
“Understood.”
Lala looked a little relieved. I hoped she would continue to grow with that same pure-hearted honesty.
Encouraged by my words, she resumed sketching the two birds. Yes, just like that. At this rate, it wouldn’t take long before she could summon them properly.
“Bear.”
“You’re already done? Let me see… Whoa, this is incredible! It looks exactly like it, Beartolt. This is amazing!”
I showed the drawing to the others, and everyone unanimously agreed—it was spectacular.
With this level of skill, I could entrust Beartolt with all the magical creature illustrations. As expected of my summoned creature—its abilities were top-notch.
Since Beartolt had finished Lagios’ portrait, I asked it to draw Cayenne next.
Beartolt seemed to really enjoy drawing, as it began sketching Cayenne while whistling.
Wait—whistling!?
