Episode 20: In Other Words, It’s Boring
I told everyone, including His Majesty the King, about the dream I had this morning. When I had finished, both His Majesty and Mother clutched their heads with both hands.
I didn’t expect even Mother to react that way. The others seemed too stunned to even move.
Maybe I shouldn’t have said anything? But as Lagios pointed out, keeping it a secret would probably be worse.
“Everyone, listen carefully. Do *not* speak of this to *anyone*. Understood?”
Father’s commanding presence filled the room with a heavy atmosphere.
—
That day, His Majesty and Mother left without saying much more.
However, by the next day. After sorting out his thoughts, His Majesty personally pleaded with me, saying, “Please, just try to stay quiet for a while.”
It seems His Majesty’s mental stamina was running dangerously low.
Mother also gave me a similar request. So I decided to behave for the time being.
Meanwhile, Selvus would work on writing the descriptions for the magical creature encyclopedia. Once it was complete, I’d just say, “Make it happen,” and let the process continue.
This wasn’t me dumping the work on him—I’m simply trusting Selvus Tian, the Vice Guild Master of the Summoning Guild. I leave it in your hands.
After arriving at the Summoning Guild, I summoned Pii-chan and Ochun for Lala’s sketching practice.
“Lala, how’s it going?”
“Thanks to you, I think I’m starting to understand the characteristics of the Bardon and the Firebird. Bit by bit, I feel like I might be able to summon one.”
Good. It seems her sketches weren’t going to waste.
She attempted summoning a few times after that. But her imagination still wasn’t strong enough. She wasn’t able to bring anything forth.
Could it be that summoning is actually quite difficult? Since I’ve never failed before, I wouldn’t really know.
For now, I had Lala continue sketching the two birds. If she kept at it, she’d probably succeed eventually.
That settled, I had nothing left to teach her. At the same time, I couldn’t interfere with Selvus’ work.
I was bored.
“Hmm, what should I do? His Majesty told me to stay out of trouble…”
The weather was nice. Maybe I could take a nap with everyone? That didn’t sound too bad.
Lagios’ fluffiness was top-tier. Cayenne’s smoothness was delightful. Beartolt’s softness was comforting.
Ah, just thinking about their textures made me want to summon a sheep. Wouldn’t a fluffy sheep be great?
“Rufus-sama, isn’t it a bit too early to be napping?”
As I lay on the sofa with everyone, Balt voiced his concern hesitantly.
Balt and Ray weren’t just my bodyguards—they also served as my watchers and tutors. That’s why Balt seemed reluctant to let me doze off.
But still…….…
“Balt, how about we explore the castle?”
“I strongly advise against it. It would likely cause another incident…”
“Just a little bit. Just a tiny bit. Besides, I could give Lagios and the others a tour of the castle.”
Upon hearing this, Lagios wagged its tail eagerly. It was looking at me with excitement.
Seeing that, how could I *not* do it?
Cayenne and Beartolt also looked at me with eyes full of anticipation.
“I’m sorry, but if you walk around with Lagios-sama and the others, it will draw too much attention. Many nobles visit the royal castle, and it would be quite troublesome if they noticed.”
“Then what about an area where normal people can’t go? Like the basement?”
“The basement? I doubt there would be anything interesting down there…”
“If it’s not allowed, then I’ll just take a nap here.”
As I declared my intent to nap, Balt fell into deep thought.
I had always known the basement existed. But I’d never actually been down there.
According to Brother Leonard, the castle’s basement was extremely old. He even suggested it might have existed before the castle was built.
Balt hesitated. I just needed one last push.
His Majesty had told me to “stay quiet,” but he never said I had to stay in my room. He hadn’t even banned me from visiting the Summoning Guild.
“Brother Leonard explored the castle basement when he was younger. And as far as I know, nothing bad happened back then, right?”
When I said that, Balt and Ray exchanged glances.
Since both of them were still young, they probably hadn’t been working at the castle back when Brother Leonard explored the basement.
However, as my knight escorts, they should have been properly informed about restricted areas. Judging by their reaction, the basement wasn’t off-limits.
So, what exactly was down there?
In the end, Brother Leonard never told me what was in the basement. He just smirked at me.
“One day, go see the basement for yourself.”
That’s what he had said.
As if he had left everything behind down there.
Now, I was getting excited.
“I understand. However, before that, I will go request permission from His Majesty to enter the basement.”
“Balt, you’re too serious.”
I gave him a slow, pleading look. But it didn’t seem to have any effect.
Leaving Ray to watch over me, Balt quickly left the room.
Maybe Father had been extra strict with them behind my back.
Perhaps I had been making things difficult for them without realizing it.
“Ray, has His Majesty ever scolded you because of me?”
“No, nothing like that. However, we were strictly instructed to report if Rufus-sama ever attempted to do something out of the ordinary.”
“……..…Sorry about that.”
“There is nothing for you to apologize for, Rufus-sama. Our duty is to fulfill your wishes to the best of our ability.”
Loyal as ever, Ray looked at me with eyes as clear as a cloudless blue sky.
Hmm…….. So that’s how Ray interpreted it.
As expected of my devoted follower.
But now, I suspected Balt was struggling more than I had realized.
I should get him some stomach medicine as a gift later.
