Episode 27: In Other Words, Both Brothers Are Hopeless
As soon as Ray brought in the paints, Beartolt wasted no time grabbing them and started painting.
I knew it was good, but wow. Adding color made its artwork even more incredible. Seems like just a pencil sketch wasn’t enough for it.
“A full-color Magical Creatures Encyclopedia would be nice. But copying it would be a pain. Well, I guess we could just have Beartolt draw a bunch of them. Anyway, while everyone is busy sketching Lightmoth, I need to write up the descriptions for the magical creatures.”
First, I need the name and characteristics. Then, their abilities. The other pages don’t include much about abilities—just generic stuff like scratches with claws or bites with teeth.
Instead, they have detailed measurements, like height and arm length.
So… does this mean I have to take everyone’s measurements?
Wait. My summoned magical creatures can probably change their size at will if I order them to.
“Pii-chan, can you grow to Beartolt’s size?”
“Pii-chan! Bow before me!”
…What was that battle cry? Well, whatever.
With a ZUMOMOMOMO sound, the sparrow-sized Pii-chan expanded to the size of a bear. Now it looked like a full-blown giant monster bird.
If this thing walked around town, people would totally freak out.
“Hmm… this is a problem. Ochun, can you grow too?”
“Chun!”
Ochun also let out a ZUMOMOMOMO sound and grew huge.
Amazing. Looks super fluffy. I couldn’t resist diving into its chest. So warm.
But seriously, this is a problem.
“Selvus, what should we do? I can’t record their sizes like this.”
“That is quite a predicament. In that case, let’s just write them down at whatever size Prince Rufus prefers.”
“Got it. That’s what we’ll do. After all, I make the rules here!”
Now, what should I decide?
Ochun should be the same size as a Bardon. That way, people can summon a cute, little bird.
As for Lagios… bigger is better, right? Though summoning it won’t be easy. And if someone actually manages to do it, things could get really out of hand.
“Come to think of it, there wasn’t a page for Trap Boxes in the Magical Creatures Encyclopedia, was there? Does that mean there are a lot of magical creatures being summoned in secret?”
“That is a possibility. However, summoning just one type of creature used to take a great deal of time. So I doubt there was much opportunity to test others.”
“I see. Hmm… should I include Lagios or not?”
As I debated, I made eye contact with Lagios. It was curled up on my lap in its small puppy form.
I wasn’t trying to discriminate. But I felt like some of the more dangerous magical creatures needed special handling.
It’s probably best to avoid summoning anything too overwhelmingly powerful. I really don’t want people thinking summoners are just walking disasters waiting to happen.
“I don’t mind if you include me. No one else will be able to summon me anyway.”
“Really?”
“We are not forcibly dragged into this world. We carefully evaluate our summoners and decide to come if we deem them worthy.”
“I see. So you came here because I summoned you, Lagios?”
Aww, what a good boy.
I forgot all about my work and started petting it. Its soft, silky fur felt amazing.
I got so absorbed in cuddling Lagios that I didn’t even notice the knock on the door.
Who dares interrupt my fluffy time?!
Balt checked the door, and in walked…… Brother Gilliam.
And why does he look so happy?
He’s supposed to be making a list of everything inside Tora-chan, per the king’s orders, right?
“Ruuuufuuuus~!”
“Wait—Brother Gilliam, stop!”
Brother Gilliam scooped me and Lagios up in a hug and started kissing us all over.
Stop. Just stop.
He’s being so embarrassing right now. Look, even Lala is starting to back away.
“I heard all about it! You got an amazing magical creature, didn’t you? And apparently, it’s stuffed full of ancient artifacts?! This is fascinating—so fascinating!”
“…I see.”
Looks like his scholar instincts kicked in.
Yeah, I get it. Scholars love ancient ruins and excavated relics.
He must have heard about it from the king and just couldn’t contain himself.
Is this country’s future really going to be okay?
Brother Gilliam is going to be the next king, right?
Brother Leonard is out of the question.
And I’m also out of the question.
We’re doomed. Doomed, Bob.
“The king asked me to make an inventory. But wouldn’t it be faster if I just asked you directly? Right?!”
“…Yes, I suppose so.”
This is bad. Brother Gilliam is in full-on hopeless mode.
Would a good smack bring him back to his senses?
No, that would probably be a terrible idea.
Which means… I have no choice but to summon Mother.
I subtly glanced at Balt.
Balt nodded.
I’m counting on you, Balt. I choose you.
“I’d love to start checking the contents right away. But before that, let’s talk about our ancestor who had the Summoning Skill.”
“You know about them, Brother Gilliam?!”
“Oh, of course. That was about… let’s see… 1,200 years ago.”
“1,200 years ago?! Tora-chan, you’ve been alone in that place for that long?!”
No way.
Spending that much time all alone?
How did it not go insane?
I hugged Tora-chan tightly.
“Um… I was asleep until the door was opened. So I didn’t realize that much time had passed. No wonder the castle looks so different.”
I almost collapsed right then and there.
Well, at least Tora-chan didn’t feel lonely. So that’s a relief!
Might as well pet Tora-chan.
And while I’m at it—might as well sniff it too.
Hmm. Smells like wood.
Kinda relaxing, actually.
