Episode 28: In Other Words, I Can Do It Too
As I was sniffing Tora-chan, Brother Gilliam gave me a look like he was staring at something pitiful.
What’s with that face?
That’s my face to make.
“Can I continue the story?”
“Go ahead.”
“So, Rufus, you know what happened around 1,200 years ago, right?”
Something that happened 1,200 years ago…
Unlike Brother Gilliam, I’m not a history buff. So there’s no way I’d know.
But since he specifically asked, it must be something covered in history class.
Which means it must be some major historical event.
“If I recall correctly, wasn’t that around the time when the Divine-Demonic War ended?”
“Exactly! As expected of you, Rufus. You’ve studied well.”
Thank goodness, I got it right.
From what I remember, before that war, gods and demons were constantly fighting.
But about 1,200 years ago, they ended up taking each other out. And both gods and demons disappeared from the world.
The reason it turned into mutual destruction was because the gods, who were at a disadvantage, gave humans divine weapons to fight alongside them.
After the gods were defeated, the remaining humans wiped out the demons.
“So the ancestor who summoned Tora-chan lived during that time? Restoring a war-torn land must have been really tough.”
“It seems so. That era is well-documented in historical records. The person with the Summoning Skill was named Ruwen. He was the fifth prince and apparently had a habit of wandering around.”
The fact that records from that time still exist today is pretty surprising.
Maybe I should read up on past kings at least once.
But 1,200 years of records… that’s gotta be a ridiculous amount of reading.
No doubt, Brother Gilliam has gone through all of it.
History buffs are terrifying.
“So during his travels, he gathered legendary weapons?”
“That’s what I think too. But there are so many unknowns—why he decided to collect scattered legendary weapons, how he found them, and how he obtained them. Of course, he must have used money. But back then, there shouldn’t have been enough wealth to spend on such things.”
Brother Gilliam folded his arms and sank into thought.
He reached the same conclusion I did, but he couldn’t figure out how it was possible.
Meanwhile, I had a pretty good idea—if you use Summoning Skills smartly, it should be totally doable.
“Hmm, if it’s just about finding them, you could summon a magical creature with tracking abilities. And as for obtaining them… well, you could also summon a creature skilled in theft.”
If I wanted to search for legendary weapons, I could just summon a magical creature with radar-like detection abilities, like a certain dragon radar.
And if stealing was necessary, I could summon a creature with skills like a certain phantom thief.
(Note: Maybe dragon ball and detective conan reference? idk.)
Yeah… I could totally do this.
“Rufus… you’re not saying you could actually replicate this, are you?”
Brother Gilliam smiled the fake smile he always puts on when surrounded by noble ladies.
I bet anyone else would’ve missed that micro-expression.
That was close.
Very close.
A wise man avoids danger.
Let’s pretend I haven’t thought of anything at all.
“Of course not! That’s impossible for me. Our ancestor was amazing—what an inspiration!”
Brother Gilliam narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
But unless I actually summon something, he has no proof.
This just means I definitely shouldn’t summon anything in front of him.
More importantly…
I feel like no one in this world should’ve even thought of these abilities, let alone made them real.
Coming up with the concept of a radar-like ability with no prior hints? No way.
There are people who can sense nearby presences, but that only works at close range.
So…
That ancestor of mine was probably a reincarnator, just like me.
If that’s true, then he must’ve met the Creator God.
Maybe the reason he gathered legendary weapons was because the Creator God asked him to.
Something like, “Please retrieve the weapons that have served their purpose.”
Yeah. That actually makes a lot of sense.
“Well, anyway. Based on my estimate, everything inside Tora-chan should be from before that era. Artifacts from that time are incredibly rare now, and they’re all highly valuable. I can’t wait to see what’s inside!”
Brother Gilliam was now beaming with an actual genuine smile.
Looks like the real battle starts here.
Will we be done by lunchtime?
I feel like we won’t be done by lunchtime.
Wait, are we skipping lunch today?!
No way. That’s just cruel.
We went through a repeated process:
Brother Gilliam would name an item, Tora-chan would check if it was inside. And if it was, we’d take it out.
From this, one thing became clear—
Our ancestor had *everything* that was considered valuable at the time.
…How the heck did he get all this?!
I can’t believe a wandering prince had enough money to acquire all these valuable artifacts.
Don’t tell me he was going around calling himself “Phantom Thief Ruwen” back then?
—
“No way…! I can’t believe something this perfectly preserved still exists! This is definitely the Mukube Vase!”
As I kept pulling items out of Tora-chan, Brother Gilliam suddenly let out a scream.
Looks like I accidentally fished out something super ultra rare.
Ah, he’s nuzzling it now.
Brother Leonard did the same thing before…
“Rufus, can I have this?”
“Sure, why not? There are about ten more inside, anyway.”
“T-Ten more?! In that case, Rufus… could I have another one? No—two more, maybe…?”
As he spoke, Brother Gilliam started patting my head.
Stop that! You’re messing up my hair!
But apparently, this vase was an extremely valuable archaeological artifact. And his excitement showed no signs of stopping.
Someone, please stop him.
“Gilliam, you’re being awfully noisy.”
A voice rang out from behind him.
The moment he heard it, he froze—like a Greek statue turned to stone by Medusa’s gaze.
It was Mother.
A true divine intervention.
“Mother!”
“It’s alright now, Rufus. Mother is here.”
Hearing that, I couldn’t help but cheer with joy.
Mother turned to me with a gentle smile.
Thank goodness.
That means we won’t be skipping lunch.
Nice work, Balt!
I should give him a reward later.
Maybe the Demon Sword Durandal?
…Or would that get me in trouble with His Majesty?
