Episode 31: In Other Words, It’s Impossible to Reproduce
No matter how many times I checked the box, I couldn’t find a place where it could be opened.
What the heck?
It was like some kind of millennium puzzle.
Maybe it needed a special tool or a specific way to open it.
Should I just force it open?
Power is strength, after all.
But…
“It’s no use! I can’t open it or break it. I’m completely lacking in power! I just wanted to take a quick look inside… Oh, I know!”
I turned toward Beartolt.
It tilted its head with a puzzled look.
Adorable.
All my fluffballs were adorable.
I decided to ask it for help.
“Beartolt, can you cut the side of this box with your claws? As thin as possible, if you can.”
“Bear.”
Acknowledging my request, Beartolt took the box and extended a single claw.
With careful precision, it sliced through the side of the box.
A flawless technique.
It had neatly separated only the outer layer.
But then…
“Thanks, Beartolt! That was amazing! But… this isn’t going to work. I didn’t expect the side panel to be part of the device itself.”
The inner surface was covered with dense, unfamiliar writing.
Because of that, the moment Beartolt cut through the side, it also severed thin wires running through the box.
Beartolt wasn’t to blame.
I was the one who failed to anticipate this.
I examined the cut wires.
They definitely looked like copper wires.
If only I had an appraisal ability or something…
Unfortunately, my Summoning Skill didn’t come with anything like that.
“What material is this writing made of? It’s silver in color, but… is it solder? Something about it feels different, though.”
The broken Wind Box no longer functioned.
Since I had already ruined it, I decided to dig through its insides out of pure curiosity.
Hmm…
There didn’t seem to be any batteries inside.
“Huh? What’s this? An emerald?”
A tiny emerald was embedded inside the side panel.
Despite its small size, it had been perfectly emerald-cut.
Another testament to the high level of technology from that era.
Could this be the power source?
I’d have someone appraise it later.
For now, I put the broken Wind Box back inside Tora-chan.
Tora-chan seemed pretty convenient for disposing of evidence.
Next, I had Tora-chan retrieve a flashlight-like device.
It looked exactly like a modern flashlight.
“So even in a different world, they eventually settled on this design. That’s fascinating.”
“What is that? Whoa—so bright!”
I flickered the light at Lagios, and it quickly shielded its face with its tiny paws.
Even a dragon was sensitive to bright light.
No wonder it got startled and dropped to the ground.
Though, it seemed to adjust to it pretty quickly.
Having already developed resistance, Lagios grabbed the flashlight and started shining it at Cayenne. It was playing around with it.
“Ancient people sure had impressive technology. To think they could make something like this.”
“Can’t people today make these things?”
“Absolutely not. They’ve only just started using screws, you know? There’s no way they could create a box that doesn’t even have visible seams.”
And then there was this mystery material.
It looked exactly like plastic.
Naturally, plastic doesn’t exist in this era.
The only materials they had were wood and metal.
The professor seemed to believe that understanding the internal structure might allow them to repair these devices.
But even if they figured out how they worked, it would take decades—maybe even over a hundred years—before they could actually fix them.
That was… utterly hopeless.
“If their civilization was that advanced, I bet they had weapons of mass destruction, too.”
“Weapons of mass destruction? Yes, there are some.”
“Don’t take them out. …Tora-chan, can you dispose of them all?”
“I can, but… I believe the former master stored them in case they might be useful. Destroying them would be a waste.”
“Useful…? For what?”
Would those weapons ever come in handy?
Maybe if we needed to wipe out an enemy nation…
But wouldn’t that just leave behind contaminated land?
No way.
I was never using those.
…………Wait a minute.
If I remember correctly, back in that era, the gods and demons were at war.
And humanity had sided with the gods.
Which meant that their enemy at the time was the demon race.
So, these weapons of mass destruction were probably created to fight the demons.
As far as I knew, there were no demons in the world today.
But could I guarantee that would always be the case?
No.
Was it possible that my ancestors had anticipated this and stored the weapons in Tora-chan just in case?
Even if it was an infinitesimally small possibility… it was still a possibility.
“Master, is something wrong?”
“Tora-chan, let’s put that disposal plan on hold for now.”
“Understood.”
“Lagios, do demons still exist in this world?”
“Who knows? But even if they did, I could handle them easily. Piece of cake.”
“Yeah, that’s true.”
After all, we had a walking weapon of mass destruction on our side—so powerful that even demons would run away barefoot.
I hadn’t seen Lagios’ full strength yet.
But judging by its connection to the Creator God, I didn’t need to see it to know it was terrifying.
If I ever made the careless mistake of asking it to show me its power, an entire country… no, an entire island would probably vanish from the map.
Terrifying.
“Master, you’re not thinking anything rude, are you? Something like, ‘Lagios is an indiscriminate destroyer who wipes out everything in sight’…”
“N-No way! Haha! I would never think that! Lagios, you’re always your cute, lovable self!”
Note to self: Never make Lagios angry.
I, Rufus, understood that now.
It was reliable, sure… but wasn’t there a limit to how overpowered someone could be?
