Episode 33: In Other Words, They’re All Problem Children
Tia’s gentle breeze completely dried my hair.
For some reason, my halo-like shine looked even brighter than usual.
Could it be that her wind contained some kind of hair-repairing element? No idea.
“Thanks, Tia. That really helped.”
“You’re welcome! This was nothing. If you want, I could blow this whole room away with my wind, too!”
“Please don’t. My parents would get mad at me.”
As the owner, I’m responsible for my magical creatures.
I have to make sure everything stays in order.
I can’t bear the thought of my beloved fluffy companions getting scolded.
If someone’s going to take the blame, it should be me.
Then again, in my family, only high-ranking royalty have the right to scold me.
So basically—
I almost never get scolded.
Lala would probably love having a Fairy that dries hair.
Tomorrow, I’ll tell Selvus and Lala about Tia.
I’m sure they’ll be thrilled.
—
When I returned to my room, everyone was relaxing in their own way.
Lagios was curled up on the bed like an ammonite fossil. And beside it, Cayenne was lying on its back, sprawled out.
What happened to its wild instincts?
Pii-chan and Ochun were perched on the chair’s backrest. They were striking poses at each other.
I needed to stop them soon, or our Magical Creature Encyclopedia would end up with weird entries.
Marimo and Tora-chan sat motionless on the desk.
Wait, they are alive, right?
Turns out, they were just posing as models for Beartolt.
At its feet, there were tons of sketch papers scattered around.
As always, its art was impressive.
There were even sketches of curled-up Lagios and Cayenne.
I’ll get those framed and put on display.
“Master, is this a new companion?”
“Yep! This is Tia, a Fairy. She’s great with Wind Magic. Everyone, say hi!”
“Nice to meet you, everyone!”
“Hmm, quite adorable. With this one, Lady Mother shouldn’t be too shocked.”
Cayenne had woken up and rolled over. It nodded while saying this.
Looks like it’s still traumatized from when my mother fainted at the sight of it.
But honestly, that was my fault for introducing it to her so suddenly.
I should’ve handled it better.
Then again—
Mother also fainted when she first saw Lagios. So maybe it doesn’t even matter.
At this point, her passing out is just a running gag.
After that, I introduced everyone to Tia. And they all showed off their abilities.
Tia was originally summoned to dry hair. But she actually had other wind spells.
And some of them…
Seemed really dangerous.
“‘Death Storm’…? Tia, you are absolutely *not* allowed to use that! I don’t want to become a Destroyer!”
“Ehhh—”
“No ‘Ehhh’!”
Jeez.
Why do all my summons have such strong personalities?
Even seemingly harmless ones like Pii-chan and Ochun probably have hidden powers that are terrifying.
I’m too scared to ask.
The only truly safe one might be Marimo.
Turning into a spiky sea urchin is harmless compared to the others.
Just as I was thinking that, I noticed Tia. Shehad been bouncing on Marimo like a balance ball. She suddenly looked curious.
“So… aside from glowing, Marimo can’t do anything else?”
“Glowing is plenty! You have no idea how helpful that is. The only reason this room is bright right now is thanks to Marimo!”
“Maybe, but… don’t you think Marimo could do more?”
Hey!
Don’t challenge Marimo!
If you push it too far, you’ll get stabbed in the butt with its spikes!
As I nervously watched Marimo, I suddenly felt the room getting warmer.
Wait.
What’s going on?
“Huh…? Ahh! H-HOT!!”
“Tia?!”
Tia frantically jumped off Marimo.
Turns out, the heat source was Marimo itself.
Maybe it took her words as a challenge?
But Marimo, listen—
You don’t actually have to get hotter!
Oh no.
Its temperature keeps rising!
“Marimo, stop! I get it, okay? You’re amazing. So please, stop heating up!”
At my command, the heat vanished instantly.
That was close.
If that had continued, we all would’ve been roasted alive.
Looks like Marimo can do more than just sprout spikes and glow—
It can also generate heat.
Is it…. the sun or something?
Maybe the most dangerous one to anger isn’t Tia or the others—
It’s actually Marimo.
And since it has no facial expressions, it’s even harder to read.
I’ll have to be extra careful handling it.
Still…
The one I thought was the safest turned out to be a problem child too?
Sensei, what kind of face am I supposed to make at this situation?
“That was amazing, Marimo! Now that’s what I’m talking about!”
Tia landed back on top of Marimo and began petting it.
She must really like it up there.
Maybe it has the perfect amount of bounce?
Now I’m curious—
I kinda want to try it too.
“Marimo, grow bigger.”
Marimo expanded to the size of a balance ball. I sat on it, enjoying its springy texture.
Oh, this is nice.
Now I totally get why Tia likes it.
Of course, I got too carried away—
I ended up flipping backward and smacking my head.
Now I have a big bump on my forehead.
Naturally—
My family can never know.
