Episode 35: In Other Words, It’s Complete
While learning how to draw from Beartolt, I continued working on the encyclopedia draft.
There were many new magical creatures to add. But since I already knew what to write, it didn’t take too long.
“This draft looks good. Selvus, who should I show it to next?”
“If His Highness the First Prince reviews it, it will be as good as approved.”
“That makes sense. Brother Gilliam would be the perfect person for this. He probably has experience making tons of encyclopedias.”
I was really glad to have Brother Gilliam around.
With his scholarly background, he’d evaluate the draft from an academic perspective.
Or maybe… it would have been better to just dump the whole thing on him from the start?
Considering how obsessively he dotes on me, I was sure he’d gladly handle everything for me.
Maybe I’ll do that next time?
Just as I was mulling it over, the guild door knocked.
Could it be Brother Gilliam himself appearing just in time!?
No, it was Brother Leonard.
His attendant stood beside him, holding a thick stack of papers.
…No way.
“Rufus, I’ve compiled the ‘list of weapons to investigate’ that His Majesty requested.”
With a heavy thud, the stack of papers landed on the desk.
“That many!?”
Did he seriously list every single weapon throughout history!?
I could’ve sworn His Majesty only asked for important ones…
“Are there really that many types of weapons?”
“Of course! It’s not just swords and spears—there are also siege weapons for attacking castles and defensive weapons for protecting them.”
“Wait… are those still in use?”
“Of course! But, apparently, ancient civilizations had even more incredible weapons.”
Brother Leonard’s eyes sparkled with excitement. But I had zero intention of bringing out dangerous weapons.
This was a problem.
Should I tell him the truth, or pretend Tora-chan doesn’t have those weapons?
Considering Tora-chan already contained modern appliances and mass destruction weapons, odds were, everything was inside.
Including whatever legendary weapons Brother Leonard was dying to see.
I skimmed through the stack of papers, but as expected, I had no idea what most of these were just from the names.
I should’ve studied weapons more…
“Huh? Wait a minute… this list…”
“You noticed? That’s the list of legendary weapons! You’re curious too, right, Rufus?”
“W-Well, yeah…”
Though, not in the same way as you.
While Brother Leonard’s curiosity was excitement, mine was more like anxiety-induced stomach pain.
Now he was grinning at me with a dazzling smile.
Sigh…
I guess I should start checking the legendary weapons list first.
If I don’t, Brother Leonard won’t leave anytime soon.
“Alright, I’ll start by checking this list.”
“I’m counting on you, Rufus!”
Brother Leonard looked way too excited about this.
I summoned Tora-chan and started checking each item from the top.
I recognized some of the names. But a lot of them were completely unfamiliar.
I always thought Brother Leonard only cared about swords, but it turned out he was a full-fledged weapon enthusiast.
This was new information… and honestly, I should probably avoid showing him any weapons.
The first page listed super famous legendary weapons.
Basically, the ones like Excalibur, which I had summoned last time.
I whispered to Tora-chan while checking the list.
No way was I letting Brother Leonard hear Tora-chan’s responses.
“Ugh, everything on the first page is here… Even bows and hammers…?”
“Hmm? What was that?”
“N-Nothing! I just need to report the results to His Majesty, right?”
“Yeah, but I’d like to know too.”
Brother Leonard beamed at me with a bright smile.
I wanted to refuse, but his smile was too powerful.
I had no choice but to say it.
“Umm… all the weapons on the first page… are here.”
“*ALL* of them!? Rufus, can you show them to me!?”
“If we have permission from His Majesty and Mother, I can show it to you.”
“Jesus!”
Brother Leonard looked up at the sky, holding his head with both hands.
Lala stared at him with a pitiful gaze. It was as if she was observing someone with unfortunate qualities.
That’s exactly what makes Brother Leonard so disappointing.
Despite my heartless declaration, Brother Leonard slumped his shoulders in disappointment, took the first paper, and slowly walked out of the room.
There was a sense of melancholy surrounding him.
But Brother Leonard, you’re planning to take that paper to His Majesty, right?
I know you’re not the type to give up over something like this.
Even if His Majesty and Mother say “no,” I’m sure Brother Leonard will sneak into my room later tonight.
Maybe I should have just pretended those items weren’t there after all.
Still, it was a blessing that Brother Leonard left.
I should use this opportunity to check the remaining list.
As I get further down the list, more unknown names are appearing.
I abandoned my guild work and focused entirely on the list, working frantically.
The real challenge was how much time I had left before Brother Leonard came back.
If I’m not careful, His Majesty might come to shut me up.
If that happens, His Majesty will definitely see the list.
He will probably ask what the results were.
I need to understand enough of the list by that time and secretly inform His Majesty about the dangerous weapons it contains.
Wait… Cannon!?
Is this a joke?
There’s gunpowder in this world?
I’ve never seen or heard of such a thing!
Ugh, this is going to be troublesome…………
