Episode 37: In Other Words, It’s Super Effective
When we arrived at the salon, I found Brother Leonard writing something with a serious expression. It seemed like he hadn’t noticed us enter yet.
For someone with the Sword Saint Skill like Brother Leonard, it’s surprising that he didn’t notice our presence. What on earth could he be so absorbed in writing?
When I peeked over, it looked like he was writing a reflection letter. And not just one—he seemed to be writing the same thing over and over again.
Was this some kind of hell on Earth?
It seemed that, as expected, Leonard had been scolded by the King. And now he was doing this writing exercise.
I never wanted to see my ten-years-older brother doing such a thing.
So, I decided to clear my mind. I pretended I hadn’t seen anything until the King arrived.
This must be a bad dream. But I might never wake up from it.
“Master, what on earth is your brother doing?”
“Shh! Lagios, don’t look.”
I decided to keep it a secret for Brother Leonard’s sake.
While this exchange was happening, the King arrived at the salon. Brother Leonard was still absorbed in his writing. He didn’t notice him. Seeing this, the King nodded in approval.
It seemed that Leonard had passed his “test”.
…Could it be that he had to do this writing exercise every time? I felt like I had glimpsed a dark side of the royal family that I never knew about.
When the King arrived, lunch was also brought in.
“Sorry for calling you suddenly, Rufus.”
“No, there’s no need to apologize. I actually had something to report to you, Your Majesty.”
“I heard about it from Leonard… Is it something else?”
“Yes, it is.”
The King sighed deeply, raising and lowering his shoulders. Could it be that I’ll be forced to do some kind of writing exercise too? But no, I didn’t collect any of this stuff. If anyone should be doing the writing exercise, it should be my ancestor, Ruwen-sama.
As lunch was laid out, Brother Leonard was finally freed from his writing. His face looked gaunt and drained. Which showed just how effective that writing exercise was for him.
I didn’t think Brother Leonard was the type to be so brainless. But now some doubts about that were growing in me.
“Rufus, can I see the list that Leonard made?”
“Here it is.”
It felt a bit rude, but it was the King’s order. I signaled to Ray, who brought the list to the King.
The King was busy, after all. I guess mealtime was precious for him too.
Still, I had heard once that things had become a lot easier for the King now. Since both Gilliam and Leonard were around compared to when it was just him alone.
“Hmm, how far along are you with the investigation?”
“It’s still just the first item list, but it seems like most of it is already in there.”
“…….I see.”
The King closed his eyes and placed his hand on his chin. Meanwhile, Brother Leonard’s eyes seemed to have regained some shine. He’s truly a persistent one. If he were to let out a cheer here, it would mean more writing exercises for him in the afternoon. This time, he’d really be in for hell.
“I wouldn’t expect it, but you haven’t actually brought any out, have you?”
“Of course not. I wouldn’t do something so dangerous.”
I flinched a bit under the King’s stern gaze. My father definitely has a certain intimidating presence. I wonder if that’s because of some appraisal skill he might have or if it’s something he developed over time?
Then, the fluffballs popped out from under my clothes. They were sensitive to my anxiety, and Lagios had already grown big again.
Seeing the lineup of my reliable companions in front of me, the King looked flustered.
“No, I’m not angry at Rufus. I was just making sure, okay? But, wait, is there something new here?”
“Ah, yes, I summoned a Fairy, Tia. Isn’t she cute?”
I pushed Tia forward. Both the King and Brother Leonard’s faces turned pale. It seemed like they both weren’t fond of fairies.
I started to feel sorry for the Fairy. Just because fairy tales say they’re mischievous, she was getting treated like this.
I must clear the fairy’s name here.
“Your Majesty, Brother Leonard. Tia only does cute pranks, so it’s fine.”
“So she does prank, huh?”
“Of course! That’s the role of Fairies like us.”
“No, that’s not it. I summoned Tia to help dry my hair, okay?”
Ah, the King and Brother Leonard are looking at me with a disappointed expression. It was as if they’re thinking, “You summoned a fairy just for that?” Well, that’s exactly right.
“Rufus. In that case, wouldn’t it have been fine to summon some other kind of magical creature?”
“Papa, are you not satisfied with me?”
“Papa!? N-No, not at all! You’re cute. Good job, Rufus.”
After hearing Tia’s “Papa” remark, the King quickly turned his attitude around. His face had already turned all soft and smitten.
Looks like he really wanted a little girl. No wonder I was born so much later than my brothers. He must have bet on his last chance. Too bad, though—he got a boy instead.
“Tia, can you get to my size?”
“Like this?”
“Whoa!“
When Tia grew to about the size of a seven-year-old, the King let out a sound I’d never heard before. To be honest, it was a little creepy.
It seemed I wasn’t the only one who thought that. Brother Leonard was looking at the King with the same disappointed expression. I, too, gave the King the same look as Brother Leonard.
