Episode 39: In Other Words, It’s Safe to Proceed
Since Balt and Ray had returned, I’d decided to get some fresh air and went outside. Meanwhile, it seemed that Lala was going to learn how to sketch Ochun, Marimo, and Tia from Beartolt-sensei. I’m counting on you, Beartolt-sensei.
Still, it seems like Lala is becoming quite motivated. It’s a good thing. Having summoned the Bardon seems to have given her some confidence.
“I’m going for a walk in the garden. Lagios, you’re coming too.”
“Of course.”
“And I’ll take Cayenne too. Tora-chan worked hard this morning, so it can rest.”
After returning Tora-chan to its place, I put Cayenne in my chest pocket. It was just the right size for its head to stick out a bit.
Carrying the puppy-sized Lagios, I headed toward the garden.
This garden was a place only royals could visit. So, I could stroll around without worry. Many kinds of flowers were blooming at this time of year. Even just walking around would be calming.
“Oh, Brother Leonard, are you going for a walk too?”
“Hey, Rufus. Looks like we’re on the same wavelength. As expected of siblings.”
Brother Leonard was there. He had the same exhausted expression as Lala had earlier. It seemed the damage from lunch was quite severe. Is he completely out of commission for the day?
As I thought this, I noticed a small mound in the corner of the garden. What’s this?
“Brother Leonard, did we have something like this here?”
“Ah, you noticed?”
“…What did you do? I won’t be mad, just tell me.”
Brother Leonard, looking suspicious, seemed to be the one who made the mound. After hearing the story, it turned out he was frustrated and started swinging his sword here. In the heat of the moment, he ended up creating a hole in the ground. Now, he said he regretted it.
In a hurry, he used magic to fill the hole. But it seemed it resulted in this small mound.
… Brother Leonard’s magic is a bit too rough, don’t you think? Maybe this shows his personality? Or maybe it’s just that swordmasters are like this.
“Well then, wouldn’t it be easier to just use a digging spell to flatten the mound?”
“Well, yeah, but…”
As Brother Leonard casted his spell, a hole appeared. When he tried again, it turned into a small mound. How clumsy!
“Wouldn’t it be quicker to call Brother Gilliam?”
“I was thinking that too, but he’s probably busy. Also, I’m worried that if Mother hears about this, she’ll find out.”
That last part was probably the real reason. If word got out that Brother Leonard caused trouble right after being scolded, he would probably end up writing all day.
I wonder if Brother Leonard is the one who causes more trouble than me? My mishaps seem cute in comparison.
“Rufus, can you do something about this?”
“Do something? Well, I’ll try my best.”
Geez, if you look at me with those eyes, like a puppy abandoned under a bridge, there’s no way I can say no.
Now, what should I do? Earth, earth… a magic creature that controls earth. Alright.
“In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, Titan!”
“You called, Director?”
A large mole appeared before me. It was wearing a yellow safety helmet on its head. Looks like it’s ready to go. Safety check, all good. Director? Is it like a construction site supervisor?
What is it with the magic creatures I summon? They all seem to have their quirks.
“I need you to flatten the ground here.”
“Leave it to me.”
In no time, the mole flattened the ground. It was like a bulldozer. But it didn’t stop there. It even regenerated the green grass around the area, just like the surrounding ground.
Being able to grow plants too… This is way too overpowered.
“Wow, this looks amazing. Now, no one will realize I made a hole here. Thanks, Rufus. You really are my cute little brother!”
“This is a favor, Brother Leonard. Be sure to return it someday.”
“You’re so reliable. Alright, I’ll return the favor. A man’s word is his bond.”
Really? He just got scolded this morning, but now he’s causing a new problem in the afternoon. Can I really trust him? Well, I’m not actually serious about holding a grudge, so it’s fine.
Feeling relieved that the garden had been restored, Brother Leonard walked away with light steps. He was seemingly headed somewhere. That wasn’t the walk of someone who had reflected on their actions. I’m afraid he might do the same thing somewhere else again. Well, there’s nothing I can do about it.
“Thanks, Titan. I’ve seen your abilities in action. You’re very capable. I’ll have to give you a name. What do you think?”
“I leave it to you, Director.”
“Then, how about *Moguran*? From now on, nice to meet you, Moguran.”
“Nice to meet you.”
And so, Moguran the Titan became a part of my team. Ta-da!
Its specialty is manipulating earth. Judging by this, it seems like it could easily grow plants as well. It might draw some attention if used carelessly. But part of me wants to test it out somewhere.
For now, I’ll introduce it to Lagios and Cayenne, who are here with me. Of course, Moguran can shrink. So I won’t have trouble carrying it.
Then, a desire to test Moguran’s power began to well up inside me. Just flattening the ground and growing grass doesn’t quite satisfy me. I need to learn more about what Moguran can do. Even though I initially summoned Moguran to help Brother Leonard, I don’t think that would be rude to it.
