Episode 4: In Other Words, Time to Work Hard from Here
“I’ll bring you a book about Summoning Skills, so please wait a moment.”
“No, I’ll come with you. I want to remember where the books are kept.”
“My apologies. The books on Summoning Skills are stored in this archive.”
Following Selvus and Lala, I was led to a small room about the size of a walk-in closet. Inside, there was a long, narrow table and bookshelves on either side. A single window was covered by a thick, dark green curtain. It completely blocked out any light from outside.
Lala lit the candelabra, gradually illuminating the room.
And what did I find?
Just a pitiful selection of books sparsely lining the shelves.
Why do I feel a bit disappointed? I guess Summoning Skills really are a rare ability.
There weren’t even any chairs by the desk—it seemed to be a standing-only room. If needed, books were probably meant to be taken back to the previous room for reading. That explained why Selvus had offered to bring the book over earlier.
From the few books available, Selvus selected one and placed it in front of me. It seemed to contain the basics of Summoning Skills.
Suppressing my excitement, I carefully turned the pages. Wait a minute…….. isn’t this book really thin? It’s even thinner than those light novels sold at fan conventions.
Flipping through the pages, I saw illustrations of animals. But what were these? Every single one was a creature I’d never seen before.
I’d been visiting the royal castle’s library regularly. I was trying to learn as much about this world as possible. That included browsing through encyclopedias.
I’d seen animal and monster encyclopedias, but none of the creatures in this book were in them.
Could it be that Summoning Skills don’t summon ordinary creatures?
Puzzled, I glanced at Selvus. He then smiled and nodded knowingly.
Was he testing whether I’d notice this?
“As you’ve guessed, Prince Rufus, the creatures in this book are neither animals nor monsters. We call them ‘magical creatures’.”
“Magical creatures… So the beings summoned with the Summoning Skill are these magical creatures?”
“Exactly.”
Apparently, each magical creature had a name. But their numbers were quite limited—so much so that I’d say they were few in number.
…………Could Summoning Skills actually be a useless skill? A sense of doubt began to rise within me. Still, voicing that thought here would be like kicking these two off a cliff. So I kept it to myself.
“Selvus, can I see the Summoning Skill in action?”
“Of course. I’ll demonstrate it for you. However, this room is a bit cramped. So let’s return to the previous room. Prince Rufus, feel free to bring the book with you.”
“Thanks, I’ll do that.”
If I read through this encyclopedia thoroughly, will I be able to summon magical creatures myself? I was genuinely excited.
Returning to the previous room, Selvus prepared to demonstrate the Summoning Skill. My heart was racing with anticipation.
“Now then… By the name of Selvus Tian, I command you. Manifest, Marmot!”
In that moment, light radiated from Selvus’s body. It was gathering at his feet.
Gradually, the light took the shape of a creature. It eventually formed into what looked like an oversized squirrel or a prairie dog. It was exactly like the Marmot illustration from the book.
“So this is a Marmot! Can I touch it?”
“Of course. As long as I don’t command it otherwise, it won’t bite. So don’t worry.”
I touched the Marmot’s brown fur. As it appeared, its coat was rough and bristly.
It wasn’t soft and fluffy, but it had its own charm. The sensation was oddly comforting. Ah, this is what I was looking for. I want more of this fluffiness in my life!
I had to ask Selvus to summon the next fluffy creature.
“Can you summon anything else?”
“There’s one more I can summon. By the name of Selvus Tian, I command you. Manifest, Bardon!”
I see, so by saying your name and giving a command, you can summon magical creatures. It seems simpler than I expected.
As I observed with interest, light once again emanated from Selvus’ body. This time, a small bird appeared on his left shoulder. With a red beak and white feathers, it was unmistakably a Java sparrow. Thank you very much.

“Fluffy! Selvus, I want to touch Bardon!”
“Fluffy? Um, sure.”
Though a bit puzzled, Selvus handed Bardon over to me. The softness of its feathers—this was true fluffiness. I wanted to keep it. I wanted this fluffy creature as a pet in my room.
For some reason, this world doesn’t have the custom of keeping animals as pets. Cats and dogs exist as animals here, but people don’t keep them. Which is deeply disappointing.
But goodbye to the gloomy version of me from a moment ago.
With Summoning Skills, I could legally keep fluffy pets without needing permission.
Confidence boost—might even get popular with girls!
“What about you, Lala? Can’t you summon anything?”
“Um, I can only summon Marmot so far…….”
Lala lowered her eyebrows sadly.
Wait, is this the end of the demo? Is that all there is? No way! Summoning Skills, you’re such a letdown!
