Episode 42: In Other Words, Mother’s Eyes Can’t Be Fooled
“Actually, Brother, the one who grew that plant was a magical creature I summoned.”
“…Huh?”
“It’s true. In the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you—manifest, TItan!”
“Director, you called for me?”
It must have been his first time seeing a mole. Brother Gilliam’s eyes widened, and his mouth twitched. Well, it does look strange. Not only is it bigger than a normal mole, but it’s also wearing a yellow safety helmet on its head. No wonder he’s surprised.
“This little one is called Moguran. It’s skilled in gardening and can use Earth Magic.”
“I see. So, why exactly did you decide to create a flower bed, Rufus?”
Hmm, looks like I’ll have to bring up Brother Leonard’s blunder first. Forgive me, Brother Leonard. If I offer you up as a sacrifice here, Brother Gilliam’s sharp gaze—originally meant for me—should be diverted.
I told Brother Gilliam everything that had just happened without hiding anything. Hearing my story, he began massaging the wrinkles between his brows with his fingers.
“I see. That explains it. I keep telling Leonard to train his magic more. But it doesn’t seem to be working.”
Brother Gilliam smiled. But his eyes weren’t smiling. It seemed that Brother Leonard had been letting Brother Gilliam’s valuable advice go in one ear and out the other.
A perfect example of preaching to deaf ears. No wonder Brother Gilliam was annoyed.
“So, you wanted to test Moguran’s power. And that’s why you made the flower bed. You got Mother’s permission first, right?”
“Well… no, I didn’t.”
“Hmm, that’s a problem. If Mother finds out, things could get troublesome.”
“Oh? And what exactly would be troublesome if I found out?”
Brother Gilliam and I whipped around at the same time. Standing there was Mother.
Oh no! What terrible timing! We were just about to discuss what to do next.
“You two, it’s written all over your faces. Something happened, didn’t it? Now, tell me everything.”
The end. Looks like “Rufus’ Adventures” ends here.
As I exchanged awkward glances with Brother Gilliam, Mother’s gaze landed on Moguran.
“Rufus, what exactly is this creature?”
“This is Moguran, whom I just summoned. Isn’t it adorable?”
It seemed Mother had developed quite a strong heart. A slightly unusual creature like this wasn’t enough to faze her anymore. Her adaptability was truly impressive. She had, after all, once called Cayenne—the lizard-like creature—cute.
“If I recall, the Summoning Skill allows you to bring forth magical creatures based on your imagination, correct? I must say, I’m quite curious about what goes on in that imagination of yours, Rufus.”
Hiding her mouth behind a folding fan, she spoke in a slightly exasperated tone. But she seemed intrigued. She reached out to touch Moguran’s fur to check its texture. Moguran remained perfectly still. It was trying not to startle Mother.
Hang in there, Moguran. Keep her attention on you.
“Mother, we were actually just talking about Moguran.”
Seizing the moment, Brother Gilliam spoke up. It looked like he wanted to keep the conversation focused solely on Moguran.
I agreed completely. If Mother found out that the garden was now a free-for-all rare materials zone, she might just faint from sheer exasperation. That would be bad.
“Yes, that’s right! Moguran is an amazing magical creature that can use Earth Magic!”
“I see. And what kind of Earth Magic can it use, exactly?”
“Eh? Anything?”
“Why did that sound like a question? You’re not hiding something from me, are you?”
Ugh, sharp!
Brother Gilliam shot me a look that practically screamed “Wow, seriously?”
Why is he blaming me?! It’s not my fault—Mother is just ridiculously perceptive!
Seeing my reaction, Mother’s suspicion only deepened. Her upper face seemed to darken slightly. Yet, her mouth was curved into a bright smile.
What should I do? Maybe I should sacrifice Brother Leonard again… Just as that thought crossed my mind, Brother Leonard appeared. He was now fully recovered.
Oh no. This is only going to get even more chaotic.
“I sense some unsettling tension here… What happened? Ah, I see, Rufus did something again, didn’t he?”
I held back the urge to snap, “Right back at you!”
Looking at the situation, it was obvious—I was the one who seemed to have messed up. After all, Mother had completely locked onto me.
I shot Brother Leonard a resentful look, and he awkwardly averted his eyes. It seemed he was at least aware of his guilt.
Then, as if trying to save me, he suddenly shifted his gaze to something on the table.
No, Brother! That’s a landmine! Danger, danger!
“Brother Gilliam, that’s an unfamiliar-looking plant you have there. What exactly is it?”
“Uh, well, this is… um…”
Mother’s gaze followed his.
Now’s my chance to run.
But no matter how much I ordered my legs to move, they wouldn’t budge.
I knew it. Even if I ran, she would catch me. There was no escaping the Demon Lord (Mother).
In the end, Brother Gilliam and I had no choice but to confess everything. And, of course, Brother Leonard was dragged into it too.
After all, this whole mess started because he dug a hole in the garden.
Sure, Brother Gilliam and I may have made things worse. But this was a shared responsibility. From Brother Gilliam’s perspective, he might think I was the biggest culprit.
But honestly, if he hadn’t gone and taken plants from the garden without permission, none of this would have happened.
So, we were equally guilty. No objections allowed.
And after listening to our entire story—
Mother fainted on the spot.
