Episode 5: In Other Words, I Messed Up
Noticing my disappointment, Lala fidgeted nervously. She was glancing around before stepping forward slightly.
“By the name of Lala, I command you. Appear, Marmot!”
As Lala’s body began to emit light, it gathered at her feet. It was just like Selvus earlier. A Marmot identical to the one Selvus had summoned appeared. So, this was the Marmot summoned by Lala.
As I suspected, it seemed that Lala was of commoner origin. In this world, only nobles possess family names. In other words, Selvus must be from a noble family.
“Can I touch your Marmot too, Lala?”
“Y-Yes, of course. Please feel free.”
Receiving permission, I eagerly observed the Marmot Lala had summoned. I placed it next to the Marmot Selvus had summoned—they were completely identical. What does this mean?
“Selvus, they look exactly the same.”
“As Prince Rufus says, every Marmot summoned manifests in the same form.”
I see, so summoned magical creatures have no individuality. They are all equal. Whether that’s a good or bad thing is unclear, but that’s just how Summoning Skills seem to work.
That aside, I had one question.
“What can this Marmot do?”
“It can attack with its sharp front teeth.”
“…And what about Bardon?”
“It can peck with its beak.”
“I-I see.”
Hmm… is this Summoning Skill really okay? This feels like a total dud skill.
The silver lining is that very few people inherit Summoning Skills. If it were more widespread, I’d likely be teased with something like, “Ha! Your Summoning Skill is a useless dud!” That would be rough.
“Would you like to practice, Prince Rufus? I can’t say how long it might take for you to summon something……..”
Hearing Selvus’ words, I became certain—summoning magical creatures is incredibly difficult. Even Selvus, who has likely researched Summoning Skills for years, can only summon two types of creatures: Marmot and Bardon. Lala can only summon Marmot.
A difficult road lies ahead. But why? Why am I getting excited about this? If I can summon magical creatures, I’ll be able to fluff them to my heart’s content.
The magical creature guidebook from earlier had illustrations of fluffy magical creatures. The possibility isn’t zero.
So, when should I start practicing? The answer is now.
“I’ll do it, Selvus. Right now. What should I do?”
“To summon a magical creature, you must vividly imagine its form in your mind. When that image is perfectly formed, you will be able to summon it.”
I see. So as long as I can imagine the details of a magical creature, I can summon it. If I wanted to summon a gorilla, I’d need to observe one closely, draw it, live with it, and befriend it.
But magical creatures, unlike gorillas, don’t exist. Perhaps this is what makes summoning them so difficult.
I’ll start with Bardon. It’s just like a Java sparrow, and I used to have one as a pet when I was a kid. Pii-chan, I hope you’re doing well in the afterlife.
“Ahem. By the name of Rufus Eladoria, I command you. Appear, Bardon!”
Oh, I felt a small amount of strength leave my body. Was that my magical energy? I just used magic for the first time! I knew this was a world of swords and magic, but it feels amazing to actually use magic myself. Even if it isn’t fire, water, earth, or wind magic.
Light emanated from my body. It was gathering in the palm of my left hand. It slowly formed into the shape of a bird. It eventually became an adorable Java sparrow.
“It’s here!”
“I… I can’t believe you succeeded on your first try!”
“A-Amazing! I’ve never even succeeded at that before………”
“I have arrived!”
The Java sparrow declared in a deep voice, and the room fell completely silent.
Hmm… If my ears aren’t deceiving me, it just said, “I have arrived!” But surely that’s just my imagination, right?
I tilted my head. I looked down at the Java sparrow perched on my palm, seeking confirmation.
“Pii-chan, Pii-chan!”
This time, it spoke in a high-pitched voice. Hmm… This is strange. When I was a kid, the Java sparrow I kept was named Pii-chan. But it definitely couldn’t talk. What’s going on? Is it normal for magical creatures to talk?
“Is it…?”
“It’s talking!”
Selvus and Lala fell backward in shock. They landed on the floor. (And, uh, Lala, I can see your underwear. Just saying.)
But apparently, magical creatures talking is *not* supposed to happen. So, why did Pii-chan start talking?
Sure, I’ve dreamed about being able to talk to fluffy creatures more times than I can count. But could that be the reason? Did it happen because I strongly imagined that I wanted it to talk?
Hehe hehe… I really did it this time. My passion for fluffiness burned too brightly.
