Episode 52: In Other Words, He’s Awakened
It should already be reported by Balt to His Majesty the King that a mountain of inventories arrived from Brother Gilliam. Even so, the fact that His Majesty still asked about it must be his way of keeping Brother Gilliam in check.
It seems like Brother Gilliam has already forgotten about eating, sleeping, and even his governmental duties because of his research on rare materials and hot springs. His Majesty must have judged that it would be extremely dangerous if Brother Gilliam became king as things are.
I think that judgment is correct. If I were in His Majesty’s position, I would do the same.
“That is… a considerable amount of inventory has arrived. I’ve looked into some of it, and it seems there are quite a few daily necessities and decorative items. However, it appears that there aren’t many magical potions.”
I lied nervously. In reality, I believe almost all of the magical potions are there. But among them are items that should never be revealed.
Besides, if I were to say “almost all the magical potions are there” in this situation, the light would once again return to Brother Gilliam’s eyes.
And what would follow is more of Brother Gilliam’s antics. I can already see it… Yes, I can see that scene clearly. Have I finally awakened as a Newtype?
(Note: A Newtype (ニュータイプ Nyūtaipu?) is a person who has reached a new stage of human evolution in the Gundam universe.)
“I see. It’s unfortunate that there aren’t many magical potions. But even the daily necessities and ornaments of the ancients are valuable. There’s no need to feel disappointed. I’ll make time this afternoon to visit the Summoning Guild. I want to see the inventory list that Gilliam made myself.”
Brother Gilliam flinched again. It seems he’s reflecting more deeply than the ocean. Maybe it’s about time to forgive him.
I’ll tell His Majesty the truth about the magical potions when he comes to the Summoning Guild. It should be safe to confide in His Majesty alone.
“Your Majesty, I believe you’ve heard from Brother Leonard, but we’ve installed a hot spring in the Knights’ bathhouse. How often would you like the hot spring to be used?”
“I’ve heard about it. It seems to be quite popular. Let’s see… Rufus has his duties as well, so I’d like the hot spring to be available once every three days and on the days when the knights return from expeditions.”
“Understood. Leave it to me. Also, if possible, I’d like to allow those working in the castle to use it as well. What do you think?”
“Hmm…”
His Majesty placed his hand under his chin. He was seemingly in thought. The fact that he didn’t respond immediately suggests that he isn’t entirely comfortable with letting everyone use it.
Well, that’s understandable. If commoners end up with silky smooth skin, surpassing even the nobles, there might be backlash.
“It’s a difficult decision. But for now, it’s best to refrain. If the servants working in the castle all become more beautiful, it could stir resentment among the nobles.”
“You’re absolutely right. I apologize for my thoughtlessness.”
“No, it’s good to think about everyone’s well-being. It’s something I’d like to address eventually.”
I knew it… In a feudal society, it’s hard for benefits to reach the commoners. But if that system were to be disrupted, our positions could become unstable. It’s a complicated issue.
If it were just about me, I could manage somehow. But it would involve my family and many others.

After discussing the work done at the Summoning Guild that morning, lunchtime ended. His Majesty granted me permission to create a textbook for learning the Summoning Skill. However, the condition was that I must show the finished product to His Majesty first.
It seems His Majesty is cautious about me doing anything strange again. But I actually feel relieved knowing that His Majesty will review it. So it’s fine with me.
Upon returning to the Summoning Guild, I informed Selvus and Lala about the earlier conversation.
“I’ve informed His Majesty about the textbook. There doesn’t seem to be any issue. Also, it looks like His Majesty will visit this afternoon. So be prepared.”
“Understood.”
“Y-Yes, understood.”
Hearing that His Majesty would visit, Selvus and Lala’s faces stiffened.
I feel a bit guilty. Before I inherited the Summoning Skill, His Majesty would never have visited the Summoning Guild. It feels like I’ve caused them a lot of stress.
With the two still looking uneasy, we began the afternoon’s work. I suppose I should start drafting the textbook. Beartolt is currently drawing illustrations of Moguran and Aqua, who recently joined us.
Oh, I need to return Aqua to its original water jelly form. Otherwise, it might cause some strange misunderstandings about what the Undine should look like.
“Aqua, return to your original form.”
“Understood.”
With a plop, Aqua transformed back into its water jelly form. It caused Selvus and Lala to look surprised. They didn’t seem to realize that it could change its shape.
“So, Undines can freely change their form, huh?”
“Yeah, it seems that Aqua took on that shape earlier to avoid startling me. I like this round form too, though.”
“It really is a mysterious magical creature.”
Lala started poking and squishing Aqua. I followed suit and gave it a squish. Oh wow, it’s even more jelly-like than I expected. It feels cool and pleasant to the touch. Marimo was slightly warm, so they balance each other out nicely.
While we were each focused on our tasks, the area outside the door grew noisy. It seems His Majesty the King has arrived.
Recognizing the familiar commotion, tension appeared on the faces of Selvus and Lala.
I should wrap up the conversation with His Majesty as quickly as possible. It’s the least I can do for them right now.
