Episode 53: In Other Words, He Understood
His Majesty the King entered through the door, and we all stood to welcome him.
“We have been expecting you.”
“Hmm. Let’s get straight to the point. I’d like to hear your report.”
It seems he took time out of his busy schedule to come here. Wanting to minimize the time I took from him, I began by discussing the mountain of inventories.
“All of these are the inventories from Gilliam-oniisama.”
“… Just as expected, or rather, even more than expected. There’s no need to check everything. Just take a few samples for investigation; that should be enough.”
“Thank you. Also, I have something a bit confidential to discuss…”
Ah, His Majesty’s face immediately turned into a look of displeasure. I don’t want to bring it up either, you know? But something this important needs to be said. If I were in His Majesty’s position, I’d just decide to ignore it. But I’m just a child right now.
I led His Majesty to the corner of the room and whispered,
“At lunch, I mentioned that there were almost no magical potions made by the ancients. But in truth, almost all of them are there.”
“… I thought so. You did well not to mention it there. Smart move. If you had, it would have caused quite an uproar with Gilliam.”
Although he sighed, he then smiled kindly and patted my head. Hehe. But unfortunately, I couldn’t end my report just with that.
“Your Majesty, are you familiar with a magical potion called Nectar?”
“… I am. You don’t need to say any more.”
His Majesty stopped me. He fully understood the situation. Right. I figured as much. I looked at His Majesty with a serious expression and nodded.
“This will be a secret between just you and me. Do not reveal anything about it until I give the order.”
“As you wish.”
We nodded to each other, sealing the secret. Until His Majesty says otherwise, I am to know nothing about the magical potions of the Ancients.
Carrying yet another burden within a short period, His Majesty left the room with a slightly deeper smile than when he had entered.
It seems he’ll have to work even harder to keep up appearances. I’m worried that Mother might eventually notice.
Or perhaps Father will confide in Mother about the magical potions during the night, leading to some complaints. And when Mother hears about it, she’ll probably faint.
On the other hand, Selvus and Lala had been like wallflowers. And as soon as His Majesty exited the room, they finally relaxed.
They recovered, but their faces were still pale. I guess today’s work should end here. It seems the two of them are quite worn out.
“Let’s call it a day. After this, you’re free to do as you please.”
“Thank you. In that case, I’ll organize some documents.”
“I’ll practice summoning new magical creatures.”
Hmm, that wasn’t quite the response I expected. But since they seem eager, that’s fine. Now, what should I do? I suppose it’s time for some fluffiness.
With that in mind, I summoned everyone and enjoyed some fluffy cuddle time on the sofa. Balt watched me with a slightly exasperated look but didn’t say anything.
Since His Majesty visited, maybe he thought I needed to relax a bit. I wish Balt and Ray could take a break too. But as my bodyguards, that’s not really an option.
“Hmmm, Aqua feels so cool on the bottom. It’d be perfect for a hot day.”
“A hot day… Should I shear Lagios, Beartolt, and Moguran’s fur?”
“… I don’t mind. But even if you cut it, our fur will grow back the next time you summon us.”
“Oh, that’s true. I was thinking of making a fluffy pillow, but that won’t work then.”
“That would be impossible.”
Too bad—I was looking forward to a fluffy pillow. Wait a minute…
“What if I summon a magical creature that can become a fluffy pillow…?”
“Master, I strongly advise against that…”
“Yeah, I thought so.”
Summoning such an odd creature would probably damage my reputation as the Third Prince. That’s a shame. I was also thinking of summoning a house-shaped magical creature someday. But that idea will probably be shelved, too.
A moving house—wouldn’t that be amazing? Like a magical RV.
Eating barbecue outside with everyone must be delicious. Why doesn’t this world have the custom of barbecuing? Or is it just that nobles don’t do it, while commoners enjoy barbecues as part of their daily lives?
Curious, I decided to go and ask the head chef right away.
“Your Highness, the Third Prince! What brings you to a place like this?”
“I just wanted to ask you something. Do people here ever have barbecues?”
“Barbecue? What is that?”
It seems they don’t know it by that name. I explained what barbecue is like. The head chef seemed to understand after hearing my explanation.
“Oh, you mean dishes grilled on a metal grid. Of course, we have that. However, eating them outside is not allowed.”
“Why not?”
“It’s dangerous. If someone were to poison the food, it would be disastrous.”
Since it’s outdoors, it would be easier to add poison. That’s true—barbecues usually have a lot of people mingling around. It would certainly be the perfect opportunity for someone with ill intentions.
Being in a position of power is tough. You can’t even enjoy a barbecue outside.
