Episode 55: In Other Words, Use the Kitchen Equipment
I checked how to use the heating cooking appliance together with Tetsujin. Hmm, it seems like I can use it in the same way as the toaster oven I’ve been using.
It looks like I can adjust the time and temperature by turning the dial. And pressing this round button will start the cooking.
When I opened the front door, the platform slid out slightly with a clanking sound. This makes it easier to place things on the griddle. Of course, the griddle can be easily removed.
“Master, you seem quite skilled at this.”
“Well, you know, I am the third prince after all.”
“Isn’t that excuse a bit of a stretch?”
Lagios looked at me worriedly and tilted its head. It might be right. I hurriedly asked Tora-chan to get the instruction manual.
I wondered if it might not exist, but it was there.
“Ugh, I can’t read this. These are ancient characters, right?”
I showed it to Selvus. He seemed to have the most knowledge among us. After carefully examining it, he slowly nodded.
“There’s no doubt. It’s very rare to find ancient characters preserved in such a complete form.”
“This is bad. I can’t show this to Brother Gilliam.”
Among the royalty, Brother Gilliam is probably the only one who can read ancient characters. Should I learn ancient characters for situations like this? But if I ask Brother Gilliam to teach me, I might get dragged into that deep rabbit hole. What should I do?
“Lagios, can you read this?”
“Unfortunately, I can’t.”
Lagios shook its head apologetically. Well, it couldn’t be helped. I didn’t summon it to read ancient characters, after all. I could summon a new magical creature specialized in reading ancient characters, but is there anyone among the current members who can read this?
“Tia, how about you?”
I didn’t expect much, but I showed the instruction manual to Tia. She was riding on top of Marimo on the table.
“Umm, ‘Precautions for use: First, check if the magic crystal is charged with magical power.’”
“You can read it!? I never would’ve guessed Tia had such knowledge. This is surprising.”
“Hey, what’s that supposed to mean? Ahh, I feel like I’m starting to forget how to read…”
“Oh no! Genius Tia-sama, please lend your power to this ignorant one!”
I couldn’t afford for Tia to get sulky and for us to end up back at square one. Ray was about to bring the ingredients for pudding soon. We were just one step away from making the pudding. And I didn’t want that one step to drift away, waving goodbye.
“Geez, you’re hopeless. If you’re gonna beg that much, I’ll help you out.”
And so, with Tia’s help, I gradually learned how to use the heating cooking appliance.
The potential issue seems to be the magic crystal. It appears to be the power source. It was inside a small compartment at the front of the heating appliance.
“So, this is the magic crystal. It looks familiar.”
It was exactly the same as the emerald I found when I dismantled the Wind Box. So, it was called a magic crystal. Since it’s described as being “charged with magical power,” it must be infused with magic. If the magical power runs out, can it be recharged?
“It says that when the color fades, replace it with a new magic crystal.”
“Replace it? Can’t it be recharged?”
“Hmm, it doesn’t say anything about that.”
This is problematic. If the magic crystal’s charge runs out, that’s the end. In that case, this heating appliance would just be a metal container.
Before that happens, I should check with Tora-chan.
“Tora-chan, is there a charging device for magic crystals inside you?”
“Umm, no, there isn’t.”
“No way!? Then, do you have any spare magic crystals?”
I was shocked by Tora-chan’s unexpected answer. It seems that charging the magic crystal doesn’t involve using any kind of device but rather requires some other method. Maybe in ancient times, there were many people with an ability for charging.
If someone in this era had that skill, it would be a completely useless skill. Unless some incredible artifact is excavated from an ancient ruin somewhere…
But since I haven’t heard of anyone having that skill, it probably doesn’t exist. In the age of the ultra-ancient civilization, maybe charging magic crystals was a technique anyone could use.
“Umm, in that case, yes, there are some.”
“How many do you have?”
“More than a hundred.”
“And beyond a hundred?”
“I can’t count them.”
An unexpected statement of being unable to count. It wasn’t that it forgot after a hundred; it simply couldn’t count beyond a hundred.
I’m really curious about how things are labeled inside Tora-chan.
“Well, if we have that many, we shouldn’t have any trouble for a while.”
“Um, Rufus-sama, wouldn’t it be better to use the kitchen equipment?”
“……….…You’re right.”
Balt was absolutely right. There was no need to stubbornly use the convenient appliances from the ultra-ancient civilization.
I’ll give Balt a point for making me realize that. If he accumulates enough points, maybe he’ll be able to exchange them for a luxurious prize someday.
“Rufus-sama, I brought the ingredients you requested.”
“Well done, Rey. Did the head chef say anything?”
“He tilted his head in confusion but didn’t say anything in particular.”
“I see.”
Knowing the head chef, I thought he might at least ask what the ingredients were for. But I guess not. Maybe he never imagined that I’d be making sweets.
