Episode 56: In Other Words, Everyone Loves Pudding
I had the pudding ingredients in my hands. In front of me were the cooking utensils. The main cast was all here. Now, all that was left was to make it.
“Make the pudding, Tetsujin!”
“Ma!”
Seeing me give the order so enthusiastically, Lagios and the others looked at me with distant eyes.
You don’t get it, do you? In moments like this, enthusiasm is key. You need the right vibe.
Tetsujin began moving its four arms skillfully, starting the cooking process. Amazing, Tetsujin! I had no idea what it was doing, though.
Since earlier, the room had been filled with the sweet scent of caramelized sugar.
That’s definitely caramel. Wow, how authentic!
Once the preparations were done, Tetsujin poured the yellow liquid into the pre-prepared mugs. It then placed them inside the heating appliance.
I wasn’t the only one curious about Tetsujin’s cooking. Selvus, Lala, Balt, and Ray were all watching with great interest now.
On the other hand, my beloved fluffy companions didn’t seem very interested.
Well, that makes sense. They don’t eat food, after all. No wonder they’re not interested.
Now that I think about it, I should have imagined them to be able to eat with us. But then again, that would lead to food expenses.
For someone rich like me, that’s no big deal. But for commoners, it would be a huge burden. It’s easy to imagine how that would make the Summoning Skill seem like a useless skill. And that would mean failing the mission given by the Creator God.
As I wrestled with my lingering desire to eat together with the fluffy companions, I heard a *ding*. It seemed the pudding was ready.
“Ma!”
“Well done, Tetsujin. But it looks pretty hot. I wonder if we can cool it down somehow.”
“I can do that.”
Ray said this as he held his hand over the pudding.
I felt a cold breeze, like a chilly hand. It gently brushed against my cheek as I watched from up close.
It seemed Ray was using magic to send out cold air and cool the pudding.
That magic is so convenient. It was especially useful on hot summer nights. Of course, since I can’t use magic, I had the servants use it for me.
I always felt a little guilty about that during the summers. But this year is different. I have Tia, the Wind Magic specialist.
Wait, I’m starting to feel uneasy. Should I have summoned a magical creature that can use ice magic just in case?
“What’s wrong, Darling?”
“Oh, I was just thinking about how cute you are, Tia.”
“Oh my, Darling, your eyes are naughty.”
Tia twisted around playfully. I needed to keep her in a good mood from now on. A little flattery goes a long way. Whether or not I can conquer the summer depends on this moment.
Once the pudding was sufficiently cooled, I thanked Ray and asked him to stop.
In front of me was the pudding inside the mug. That yellow form was unmistakably pudding. No doubt about it.
“Everyone, do you have your spoons ready?”
“Of course.”
“Y-yes, I have mine.”
“To think that even we would be allowed to have some…”
“Thank you… Oh…”
Ray, whose loyalty is unwavering, was already on the verge of tears. If he were ever told he’d been dismissed as my guard, he’d probably end up like an empty cicada shell. I’d better be careful.
Maybe curious about our excitement, Lagios and the others gathered around the table.
Tetsujin’s big, round eyes blinked as if trying to gauge our reaction.
Now, how will it taste? I really hope it doesn’t disappoint after all this buildup.
“It… it’s delicious! This is an even more luxurious pudding than I was hoping for. The flavor is so rich!”
“This…! It’s my first time having it, but it’s incredibly tasty.”
“It’s delicious. It melts in your mouth, and then a wave of sweetness washes over you.”
Balt and Ray seemed to love it—they kept eating in silence.
They must have reached the caramel part. Balt’s hand stopped for a moment. But he continued eating. Then, as if he understood something, he nodded over and over again.
Watching this with a grin, I took a bite of the caramel. Its rich sweetness enhanced the pudding even more. Excellent work indeed.
“Hey, Darling, is it really that good?”
“Yeah. Want to try just a little?”
I asked out of curiosity. There was no mention anywhere of magical creatures eating food. But on the flip side, there was also no rule saying they couldn’t eat.
I had to be careful, just in case something happened if they did eat. I cautiously held out a spoon.
“Well then, I won’t hold back…”
“How is it?”
“So this is what sweetness tastes like. Not bad. I think I kind of like it.”
“Master, I’d like to try it too.”
“Of course. Just try a little to see how it goes.”
I let all of them have a taste. I watched them closely. I made sure not to miss even the slightest change. But nothing unusual happened. They didn’t seem to be in pain; in fact, they looked like they wanted more.
“Hey, you guys don’t need to eat food, right?”
“That’s right. But I’m starting to think it might be nice to eat once in a while.”
“I see. So it’s like a treat or delicacy for humans, huh?”
That made perfect sense. Magical creatures could have likes and dislikes, too. If that’s the case, it wouldn’t be strange for them to seek out a little enjoyment or a treat now and then.
I was satisfied with that explanation. But Selvus and Lala looked at us. Their eyes were practically popping out of their heads.
